January is the heart of the dry season in Jacó: sunny days, warm sea, small morning surf for beginners and calm crossings to Tortuga Island, set against New Year hotel prices and Costa Rica's school holidays. Here is what the month is really like and how to plan it.

What You Should Know

  • January is dry season on the Central Pacific: the nearest long-term stations record only about 2 to 7 rain days, the sea sits near 28°C, and most days run sunny from the 05:55 sunrise to a 17:30 sunset.
  • Timing inside the month matters more than the month itself. In our hotel sample, 1 January cost about $324 a night and 2 January about $262, but from 6 January the median settled near $160 and stayed flat.
  • January overlaps Costa Rica's long school-holiday break, and Jacó is the closest big beach to San José, so weekends fill with Central Valley visitors and the surf zone gets busy on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Jacó Beach has strong rip currents even in the calm season. The town pays its own lifeguards, which few Costa Rican beaches have, so swim near their towers and ask where the safe water is that day.

Jacó in January: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best January window: 6 to 31 January, ideally arriving midweek. In our sample, the New Year spike in hotel rates was largely gone by 4 January, the weather is just as dry as the first week, and weekdays avoid the busiest Central Valley weekend crowds.

Wildlife (Tárcoles & Forest)8/10: dry trails, active river birds and crocodiles

Couples8/10: sunny days, early sunsets

💰 January hotel prices in our sample (Jacó, 3 to 4 star, room for two):
1 January: ~$324/night · 2 January: ~$262/night · 3 January: ~$201/night · 6 to 31 January: ~$160–170/night
Median of 10 to 20 Jacó hotels that returned a January 2027 rate, checked 20 October 2026. A small sample, so treat the pattern as more reliable than the exact figures.

Planning Jacó for January 2027? This is one of the most dependable months of the year for a beach trip on Costa Rica's Central Pacific: dry, sunny, warm and with everything open. The weather figures below are long-term normals from the nearest official stations rather than a forecast, and the prices and tour schedules are what we found for January 2027.

Jacó is a surf town first, and January suits learners especially well: the waves are generally smaller and cleaner than in the green season, and mornings are calm. The sea is warm enough to stay in for hours, the trails behind town are dry, and the boat crossing to Tortuga Island is usually smooth. The catch is that you share it. January is peak season for foreign visitors and overlaps Costa Rica's long school-holiday break, and Jacó, a little under two hours from San José, is where much of the Central Valley goes for the weekend.

We'd lean toward January for first-time visitors, beginner surfers and anyone who wants a few days of guaranteed beach weather between a rainforest stop and the airport. We think the tradeoff is fair once the New Year week is behind you: in our sample, rates fall by half between 1 January and the second week, while the weather does not change at all.

Who January suits best:

  • Beginner surfers: the dry season brings the most consistent beginner conditions of the year, with calmer mornings for lessons.
  • Beach and boat days: warm water, dependable sun and calm seas for Tortuga Island make January an easy month to plan around the ocean.
  • Short stays near the airport: Jacó is the closest major beach to San José, so it works as a first or last stop on a Costa Rica itinerary.
  • Quiet getaways: less ideal. School-holiday weekends are lively, and the beach, bars and surf breaks are at their busiest.

Temperature and Humidity

Expect daytime highs around 31°C (88°F) and nights of 22 to 23°C (72 to 73°F). Jacó has no long-running official weather station of its own, so we bracket it between the two nearest: Quepos, down the coast to the south, averages 31.3°C in January, and Puntarenas, across the Gulf of Nicoya, 33.5°C. The UV index reaches 11, rated extreme, so the sun between about 10:00 and 15:00 is the real constraint on your day, not the heat itself. Days are short this close to the equator: sunrise is about 05:55 and sunset moves from 17:29 on 1 January to 17:43 on 31 January.

Rain Pattern

January is firmly dry season. Puntarenas averages just 1.8 rain days and 5.5 mm for the month, and Quepos, on the wetter southern coast, 7.2 days and 46 mm; Jacó sits between them, so plan on a handful of brief showers at most and many fully dry days. Most people don't realize how sharp the change is: the same stations record 15 to 26 rain days a month from May to November, so January's weather is a different climate rather than a slightly better version of the green season.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The Pacific holds near 28°C (82°F) all month. Surf is generally smaller and cleaner than in the green season, with the calmest water early in the morning, which is why lessons are booked for the first hours of the day. Trails up to the waterfalls and the dirt roads used by ATV tours are dry and dusty rather than muddy. One honest caveat on snorkeling: the water around Tortuga Island in the Gulf of Nicoya is not Caribbean-clear, and even January guests sometimes describe visibility as only fair.

January in Jacó: Crowds and Prices Week by Week

January in Jacó is busy from start to finish, but the cost of a room changes a lot in the first few days and hardly at all after that.

  • 1 to 3 January (New Year): the most expensive nights of the month. In our sample, 1 January cost about $324 a night, 2 January about $262 and 3 January about $201, and fewer hotels had rooms to sell at all. Restaurants, beach and nightlife are at their fullest.
  • 4 to 15 January (post-holiday): the foreign New Year crowd leaves, rates drop to about $160 a night in our sample, and the weather is unchanged. Costa Rican schools are normally still on their long break, so weekends stay lively.
  • 16 to 31 January (settled peak): prices hold at roughly $160 to $170, with only a small Saturday premium in our data. Midweek days are the calmest of the month on the beach and on tours.

Tour prices do not change with the season: every tour in our comparison box below costs the same in January as it did when we checked in October. What changes is availability. The biggest difference between January and the green season is that small-group tours and the 07:15 Tortuga Island catamaran can fill days ahead, so the cheapest thing you can do this month is book your must-do trips before you land.

Dry Season on the Water: Surf, Tortuga Island and a Chance of Whales

January's signature draw in Jacó is the dry-season ocean: small, clean surf for learners and calm crossings for the boat trips that leave from Los Sueños and Herradura, just north of town.

The Best Month to Learn to Surf

Jacó Beach is one of Costa Rica's easiest places to learn, and the dry season, December to April, brings its most consistent beginner conditions, with offshore winds and calmer water in the early hours. Schools set lesson times by tide, so expect to be told your exact slot the evening before. Our Jacó surf lessons guide compares the schools; once you can stand and ride, Playa Hermosa, just south of town, is a break for experienced surfers only.

Tortuga Island on Calm Seas

The full-day trip to Tortuga Island in the Gulf of Nicoya is the area's most popular outing, and January is its busiest month: more guest reviews of Costa Cat's catamaran are posted in January and February than at any other time of year. Departures run daily all month, the crossing from Los Sueños takes about 45 minutes, and January reviewers describe smooth rides and warm, calm water for swimming off the beach. Our Tortuga Island tour guide compares the six ways to get there.

Can You See Whales on a January Boat Trip?

Sometimes, but treat it as a bonus. Northern humpbacks pass Costa Rica's Pacific coast in the northern winter, and some January boat trips meet them on the crossing. We counted the evidence: of 198 Costa Cat reviews posted in January, 11 mention whales, about one in eighteen. September, when southern humpbacks are here, is very different, with 27 mentions in 84 reviews. Dolphins are seen far more often than whales at any time of year.

One Boat Trip to Check Before You Plan

Sealounge's catamaran trips to the snorkeling cove at Playa Fantasia, the top pick on our Jacó boat tours guide, ran last dry season: guests reviewed it every month from December 2025 to April 2026, but when we checked in October 2026 its booking calendar only showed dates from mid-May to mid-December. Check for January 2027 dates closer to your trip, and keep Tortuga Island or a private boat as your backup.

What to Watch in January: Holiday Crowds, Rip Currents and Sun

Nothing about January's weather will spoil a Jacó trip. The things that can are people, the sea and the sun.

School-Holiday Weekends

Costa Rica's long school break runs over the turn of the year: in 2026, classes did not start until 23 February. The 2027 calendar had not been announced as of October 2026 (the Ministry of Education is considering a shorter school year), so check the final dates, but expect January to overlap the holidays. Jacó is about 100 km from San José, a little under two hours by road, which makes it the default weekend beach for the Central Valley. What typically happens is that the town feels relaxed on a Tuesday and packed on a Saturday afternoon. Plan the beach and surf lessons for weekdays where you can, and expect slower traffic heading back toward San José on Sunday afternoons.

Rip Currents Do Not Take the Dry Season Off

Jacó Beach is long, open and exposed, and rip currents form there in every season. Research from Costa Rica's National University found that most rip-current drownings in the country happen at beaches close to San José on weekends and holidays, so busy January weekends call for extra care. Jacó's lifeguards are, unusually, paid by the municipality. Swim near the lifeguard towers, look for the darker, foamy channel running out to sea and stay out of it, and if you are caught, swim parallel to the shore and raise an arm. The emergency number is 911.

The Midday Sun

With the UV index at 11 and little cloud, January sunburn happens fast, especially on a boat or a surfboard where the water reflects the light. Book outdoor tours for the morning or after 14:00, and plan the hours around midday for shade, lunch or the pool.

Where to Stay on a January Trip to Jacó

January is peak season. Book early if your dates touch New Year, when rates in our sample were the highest of the month; from about 4 January they settle.

Most visitors stay in the center, near Avenida Pastor Díaz, within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and tour pickups. The south end of Jacó Beach is quieter, and Los Sueños on Playa Herradura, about 10 minutes north, is the resort-and-marina choice and the departure point for the Tortuga Island catamarans.

Costa Cat Cruises: Tortuga Island Tour

$173.85 · 4.9 ⭐ (1,668 reviews)

The trip we would book first in January. Calm dry-season seas suit the 45-minute crossing from Los Sueños, the day runs daily all month with breakfast, lunch, drinks, snorkeling and a beach area of its own on Tortuga Island, and it is the one January outing with a real, if small, chance of a humpback whale on the way. It is also the tour most likely to sell out on school-holiday dates, so it is worth booking before anything else.

Best in January

Surf lessons and the Tortuga Island trip are the two activities January does best. We'd give surf the edge for anyone who has never stood on a board, because the dry-season mornings are the gentlest of the year, and Tortuga the edge for families and groups, because it fills an entire hot day with almost no effort. The Tárcoles River crocodile tour, 20 km north, is the easy half-day nature outing; we like the 08:30 boat for this, when the light is soft and the birds along the mangroves are most active.

Planning Around the Heat

The ATV, zipline and waterfall hike tours all head into the forested hills behind town, where there is more shade than on the beach. Even so, in our view the first departure of the day is worth the early alarm in January, and the afternoon ATV slot at 14:00 finishes in time for sunset. A food tour fits naturally into the late afternoon, when the beach is too bright and dinner is close.

More January Activities Worth Knowing About

Most of these January-friendly experiences do not have their own guides on this site yet.

Carara National Park

Carara sits beside the Tárcoles River on the drive between San José and Jacó. It is best known for scarlet macaws, which Tárcoles boat guests regularly see along the river too. Dry-season trails are firm, and an early-morning visit pairs naturally with a crocodile boat trip on the same day. Our Carara National Park tour guide compares six guided walks, from $35.

Playa Hermosa

Just south of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is a powerful beach break for experienced surfers, not beginners. In January it is worth the five-minute drive even if you only watch the experienced surfers from the sand.

Sunset on Jacó Beach

With sunset between 17:29 and 17:43 all month, the end of the beach day comes early. The surfers, the silhouette of the headlands and the bars along the beach make the last hour of daylight Jacó's free daily event.

Los Sueños and Herradura

The marina at Los Sueños, about 20 minutes north, is where the Tortuga Island catamaran leaves, and the calm bay at Herradura next to it is a gentler place to swim than open Jacó Beach on a day with bigger waves.

Our Take

Book your must-do tours and your first night before you fly, and plan your beach days for the middle of the week: in January the weather takes care of itself, while the 1 to 3 January hotel prices and school-holiday weekends are what change a Jacó trip.

Tips for a January Trip to Jacó

  • Avoid arriving on 1 or 2 January if you can: in our sample those nights cost two to three times what the same hotels charged a week later, for identical weather.
  • Take surf lessons first thing: waves are smallest and winds lightest in the morning. Confirm your lesson time the evening before, since schools schedule by tide.
  • Swim near a lifeguard tower: Jacó's rip currents run in every season. If you are pulled out, swim parallel to the beach and raise an arm for help.
  • Book Tortuga Island early for weekends: January is the trip's busiest month, and school-holiday Saturdays fill first. Arrange Jacó pickup at least 48 hours ahead.
  • Do outdoor tours early or after 14:00: with the UV index at 11, the morning ATV, zipline and waterfall departures are the most comfortable.
  • Check Playa Fantasia dates early: the catamaran ran last dry season, but its dry-season 2027 dates were not yet bookable in October 2026. Keep Tortuga Island or a private boat as a backup.
  • Leave San José early on a weekday: the drive is about 100 km and a little under two hours, but school-holiday weekends bring heavy traffic in both directions.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Jacó in December guide covers the start of the dry season and better-value weeks before Christmas, and our Jacó in February guide covers the driest weeks of the year, with flat hotel prices and the best conditions for ATV and zipline days.
  • Not sure what to book? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences year-round and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge.
  • Where to stay. Our best hotels in Jacó guide ranks 12 hotels by guest score, from $66 a night in our sample.

How We Put This Guide Together

Jacó has no long-running official weather station of its own, so the weather figures are World Meteorological Organization normals for the two nearest stations, Quepos (1984 to 2003) and Puntarenas, with Jacó placed between them; sea temperature is a long-term average from published sea-temperature records, and sunrise and sunset are calculated for Jacó's coordinates. These are normals, not a forecast for January 2027. Hotel prices are the median nightly rate for a room for two at 3 to 4 star Jacó hotels that returned a price for each January 2027 date when we checked on 20 October 2026; only 10 to 20 hotels quoted, so treat them as a pattern. Tour prices, departure times, cancellation terms and January availability were checked live on 20 October 2026. The whale counts come from reading every review of Costa Cat's Tortuga Island tour and counting mentions by the month the review was posted. School-calendar and beach-safety facts come from Costa Rican news reporting and a National University study on rip currents. Ratings in the tables are our editorial judgment of how January suits each activity, not guest scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jacó good in January?+

Yes. January is dry season on Costa Rica's Central Pacific, with sunny days, highs around 31°C (88°F), a sea near 28°C and the most consistent beginner surf of the year. The tradeoffs are crowds and cost: it is peak season for foreign visitors, it overlaps Costa Rica's long school-holiday break, and in our hotel sample, rates spiked over New Year before settling from about 4 January.

What is the weather like in Jacó in January?+

Hot, sunny and dry. Expect highs near 31°C (88°F), lows of 22 to 23°C (72 to 73°F) and only a few brief showers: the nearest stations record about 2 to 7 rain days in January. The UV index reaches 11, sunrise is about 05:55 and sunset between 17:29 and 17:43.

Can you see whales near Jacó in January?+

Occasionally. Northern humpbacks pass the Pacific coast in the northern winter and some boat trips to Tortuga Island meet them on the crossing. Of 198 Costa Cat reviews posted in January, 11 mention whales, about one in eighteen, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to book. Dolphins are much more common.

How much does it rain in Jacó during January?+

Very little. January is the heart of the dry season: Puntarenas averages 1.8 rain days in January and Quepos 7.2, and Jacó lies between them. When rain comes it is usually a short shower, not the afternoon downpours of May to November.

Is January expensive in Jacó?+

The first three days are. In our sample of Jacó hotels for January 2027, 1 January cost about $324 a night, 2 January $262 and 3 January $201, while nights from 6 January onward held at about $160 to $170. Tour prices are the same as in other months, so the January premium is almost entirely in lodging.

What is the best week to visit Jacó in January?+

Any week from 6 January, ideally arriving midweek. Hotel rates in our sample are flat from then to the end of the month, the weather does not change, and weekdays avoid the school-holiday weekend crowds from San José.

What are the best things to do in Jacó in January?+

Surf lessons and the Tortuga Island trip suit January best, thanks to small morning waves and calm seas. The Tárcoles River crocodile tour, ATV rides, ziplining, horseback riding and waterfall hikes all run throughout the month. The Playa Fantasia catamarans ran last dry season, but their dry-season 2027 dates had not been published as of October 2026.

Is it safe to swim in Jacó in January?+

It can be, with care. Jacó Beach has rip currents in every season, and most rip-current drownings in Costa Rica happen at beaches near San José on weekends and holidays. Swim near the municipal lifeguard towers, avoid the darker, foamy channels flowing out to sea, and if you are caught, swim parallel to the shore and signal for help. Herradura Bay, north of town, is more sheltered.
