Six ways to see Carara National Park from Jacó, from a $35 guided walk to a dedicated birdwatching tour, a private tour with hotel pickup and a full day from San José, with how tickets work and when the wildlife is most active.

What to Know Before Booking a Carara National Park Tour

  • A guided two- to four-hour walk through Carara National Park, 30 minutes north of Jacó, looking for scarlet macaws, monkeys, poison dart frogs and dozens of bird species through the guide's spotting scope.
  • The park opens at 07:00 from December to April and 08:00 from May to November; most tours start between 07:00 and 09:00, when wildlife is most active and before the heat builds.
  • Guided walks cost $35 to $68 per person; some include the park ticket and some don't. A private tour with Jacó pickup costs $65 to $85 each, and a full day from San José from $196.
  • Scarlet macaws are not guaranteed inside the park. Several guides drive guests to known macaw spots outside it after the walk, which is often where the best sightings happen.

Carara National Park Tours: What You're Booking

A Carara National Park tour is a guided nature walk through one of the best wildlife parks on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, about 24 km (30 minutes) north of Jacó on the road to San José. Carara sits where the dry forests of the north meet the rainforests of the south, so the same trails hold species from both, and it is famous for its scarlet macaws. A guide with a spotting scope finds what you would walk past: sleeping bats, poison dart frogs, motmots and trogons, monkeys high in the canopy, and lets you take photos through the scope with your phone. This is where Carara tours differ: the walk is much the same, but some prices include the park ticket and some don't, and only one tour picks you up in Jacó.

Buy your ticket online first. Since September 2023, SINAC, Costa Rica's park service, has sold Carara tickets only online, and guests confirm they could not buy them at the gate. Three of the tours below include the ticket in the price; on the others you buy it yourself before you go. SINAC lists the fee for foreign visitors at $10 plus 13% VAT for adults and $5 plus VAT for children aged 2 to 12.

Our Top Pick

G&R Adventures: Guided Visit to Carara National Park

$45 · 4.9 ⭐ (256 reviews)

Our pick for the strongest all-round option: 4.9 from 256 reviews, the longest review history of any Carara tour, with park admission included, so there is nothing to buy separately. Guides carry a spotting scope and often take guests on to a macaw spot after the walk.

What to Expect on a Carara National Park Tour

About two to three hours from the park entrance, plus any extra stop for macaws.

  1. 0108:00

    Meet at the entrance

Meet your guide at the Carara visitor center, 30 minutes from Jacó, and register for entry.

  2. 02

    Forest trail

Walk the trails where dry forest meets rainforest, stopping whenever the guide hears or spots something.

  3. 03

    Scope sightings

Look through the spotting scope at bats, frogs, trogons and monkeys, and take photos through it with your phone.

  4. 04

    Birds and monkeys

The guide works the canopy for scarlet macaws, toucans, motmots and capuchin, spider or howler monkeys.

  5. 05

    Lagoon or macaw stop

Some groups continue to the quieter lagoon side along the Tárcoles River or a macaw spot outside the park.

  6. 06

    Back at the entrance

Finish late morning, in time for lunch in Tárcoles or the drive back to Jacó.

This follows G&R Adventures' morning walk. The birding tours start an hour earlier in the dry season and spend longer stopping to look and listen.

Our take (macaws): Don't judge the tour on whether you see a macaw on the trail. Several guests saw none inside the park and then found pairs or whole trees of them when the guide drove to the lagoon side or a spot along the river afterwards. If macaws matter most, tell the guide at the start and leave time after the walk.

Our Pick: Best Overall

G&R Adventures: Guided Visit to Carara

$45, ticket included · 4.9 from 256 reviews · 2 to 3 hrs · daily

A guided walk from the park entrance on the forest trails near the visitor center, with a guide who sets up a spotting scope on everything worth seeing and helps you take photos and video through it. Recent guests list ghost bats, poison dart frogs, basilisks running on water, trogons, toucans, agoutis and capuchin and spider monkeys. Several guests describe the guide driving on afterwards to the quieter lagoon side of the park along the Tárcoles, or to a known macaw spot outside the park, when the macaws don't show on the trail.

We'd book the 08:00 start: animals are more active early, and an 11:00 group still did well but expected less. Leave slack in your day, too: several groups ran well past the listed time because the guide kept finding more. Have your passport details ready, because the operator registers you for entry. The older complaints are about guides who could not find macaws or cut the walk short, mostly from early 2024 and early 2025.

Best for birders

Birdwatching and Nature Tours: Carara Birdwatching Tour

$45 group, $68 private · 5.0 from 54 reviews · 3 to 4 hrs · daily

A morning built around birds, starting at 07:00 in the dry season and 08:00 in the green season. Guests describe guides who identify birds by call, find motmots, trogons, manakins and raptors, and count 30 or more species on a single walk; one birder logged 40 new species in the rainy season.

We'd choose this over the general walk if birds are the point of the trip. The tradeoff is that the price covers the guide only: you buy the park ticket online yourself. One guest on a quiet morning saw few colorful birds, a reminder that sightings vary.

Best for families

Birdwatching and Nature Tours: Guided Tour in Carara

$44 group, $50 private · 5.0 from 16 reviews · 2 to 3 hrs · daily

The same company's general wildlife walk, with a guide and a professional scope, meeting in the park's parking lot. Recent guests saw coatis, agoutis, an anteater, sleeping bats and lizards, and one family with children aged 5 to 10 found the trail easy.

Once you add the park ticket it costs about $10 more than G&R's walk, so we'd pick it if your preferred time is full there or you want a private walk for two at $50 each. Bring bug spray: several guests mention mosquitoes, especially after rain.

Lowest price

Travel Costa Rica Tours: Small-Group Walk

$35, all ages · 5.0 from 12 reviews · 3 hrs · 08:00 or 09:00

A two-and-a-half-hour guided nature walk meeting at the park entrance at 07:50, with a spotting scope and a guide who photographs the wildlife for you. Guests saw toucans, macaws, monkeys and ghost bats, and one family with young children called it great for kids.

It has the lowest headline price, but children pay the full $35 and the park ticket is extra, so a family can end up paying about the same as the top pick. One rainy-day group could not use the scope at all.

Best with pickup

JungleXpeditions: Private Carara Tour

$65 to $85 each, ticket included · 4.9 from 40 reviews · 4 hrs · 07:30 or 12:30

The only Carara tour here that collects you from your hotel in Jacó, Herradura, Tárcoles or Playa Hermosa, in an air-conditioned van with water. Guests praise guides who spotted more than 25 bird species, three kinds of monkey and a porcupine, and one group went searching for macaws after the park and found eight in a tree.

We'd book this if you don't have a car, but take the 07:30 start: the one poor review came from a 12:30 group that saw little in three hours and felt the $170 for two was too much. Our Jacó private tours guide compares it with other private options around town.

Best from San José

Oropopo Experience: Carara and the Tárcoles River

$278 each for 2, $196 each for 4 or more · 5.0 from 55 reviews · 8 to 12 hrs

A full day from San José with a certified guide or biologist: Carara, a boat trip on the Tárcoles River to see crocodiles and birds, and a stop at Playa Agujas, with pickup and the park ticket included. Guests describe the boat being timed around the tides and lunch at a hilltop restaurant with a view, paid separately.

It only makes sense if you are based in San José. From Jacó, a morning walk in Carara and a separate crocodile boat trip cost far less and take half the day.

Comparing parks? Guests describe Carara as a quieter alternative to Manuel Antonio National Park, further south along the coast.

TrailsA universal-access path and the 1.3 km Quebrada Bonita loop (about 1.5 hours) at the visitor center, joined by a 650 m connecting trail, plus the Laguna Meándrica trail of just over 2 km (two to four hours) along the Tárcoles River, per SINAC

SINAC describes the Laguna Meándrica trail as the one birders favor in the mornings, but it can close in the wettest months: one guest found it shut during the wet season, so check before you count on it. Carara was the first national park in Costa Rica with a universal-access path, so the main loop suits strollers and wheelchairs, and guests describe the trails as fairly flat. One guest found the path near the visitor center noisy from the highway and saw little there, which is why guides often add the lagoon side or a macaw spot outside the park. Fees, ticket rules and trails come from SINAC's Carara page and hours from Costa Rica's tourism board, both checked on 20 October 2026; drive times are our calculation from Mapbox routes. Check SINAC's ticket site before you go, as fees can change.

How Much Does a Carara National Park Tour Cost?

Guided Carara tours from Jacó cost $35 to $85 per person, and a full day from San José from $196. What matters more than the headline price is whether the park ticket is included: G&R Adventures and JungleXpeditions include it, while the other walks charge for the guide only and you add about $10 plus VAT per adult yourself. Tips are extra on all of them.

Couple, guided walkAbout $90 to $95

G&R Adventures at $90 with tickets included, or Travel Costa Rica Tours at $70 plus two park tickets.

Couple, private with pickup$170

JungleXpeditions' private tour from your Jacó hotel, ticket and water included.

Family of four, two childrenFrom $168

G&R Adventures with two children aged 2 to 12, tickets included; Travel Costa Rica Tours charges children the full $35 plus tickets.

Most walks need at least two adults per booking; on the group birding and guided tours the group rate starts at three.

Our Take

The pattern we keep seeing in reviews is that the guide decides the tour: the best ones adapt to what you want to see and drive on to the lagoon or a macaw tree when the trail is quiet, while nearly every disappointed guest describes a guide who stayed on one short loop and finished early.

Tips for a Carara National Park Tour

  • Book the earliest start. Animals are more active and it is cooler early; the weakest review of the private tour came from a 12:30 start.
  • Check if the ticket is included. If not, buy it online through SINAC before you go; have passport details ready either way.
  • Bring bug spray and water. Mosquitoes come up again and again in reviews, especially after rain.
  • Arriving by cruise ship? Guests from Puerto Caldera booked G&R Adventures with transport from the port gate for an extra charge, and JungleXpeditions also collects cruise guests; arrange it when you book.
  • Tell the guide what you want to see. Guests who asked for macaws at the start were often taken to a second spot to find them.
  • Visiting in the dry season? Our Jacó in January guide covers the weather that month and the other tours that run near Jacó.
  • Combine it with the river or the falls. The crocodile boats leave from the Tárcoles River just north of the park, and our Jacó waterfall hike guide covers a more active morning in the hills behind town.
  • Visiting in the green season? Our Jacó in June guide covers Carara at its greenest, with 08:00 opening, quiet trails and how to plan around the afternoon rain.
  • Visiting in July? Our Jacó in July guide covers the school-holiday weeks, the midsummer dip in the rain and pairing Carara with the Tárcoles River and Tortuga Island.
  • Visiting in November? Our Jacó in November guide covers the turn toward the dry season, the last 08:00 openings before Carara switches to 07:00 in December, and low-season prices.
  • Comparing parks? Our Manuel Antonio National Park tour guide covers the busier park further south, and our Manuel Antonio birdwatching guide covers birding tours there.
  • Planning the rest of your trip? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge. Travelling with kids? Our best things to do in Jacó for families guide adds minimum ages and prices for a family of four.

How We Selected These Tours

The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every Carara National Park tour offered from Jacó and San José and checked each listing live on 20 October 2026: price by age and group size, start times, whether the park ticket is included, transport, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We required a guest review in the last six months and enough reviews to judge each tour. We left out an older Carara tour with no review since February, a private and a group birding tour from another operator with no recent reviews, and a new tour with a single review. We also left out a Jacó birdwatching tour that visits several sites around town rather than the park, and a monkey, crocodile and sloth tour that visits a private sanctuary rather than Carara. Park hours and fees come from SINAC and Costa Rica's tourism board. We then read the most recent reviews of all six tours, plus every one- to three-star review, with attention to what guests actually saw, how long the walk really ran and whether tickets caused problems.
