The best things to do in Jacó, from ATV rides to jungle waterfalls and a walk in Carara National Park to crocodile boats, Tortuga Island, surf lessons and a food walk, with what each costs and which to book first.
What to Know Before Planning Things to Do in Jacó
- Jacó is a surf town on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast with a long beach, forested hills behind it and wildlife 20 to 30 minutes north in Carara National Park and on the Tárcoles River.
- The headline experiences are an ATV ride to a jungle waterfall, a guided Carara walk for scarlet macaws, a crocodile boat, a day on Tortuga Island, a zipline over the coast and a first surf lesson.
- Tours cost from $40 for a crocodile boat and $45 for a Carara walk to $105 for a three-hour ATV ride, $158.94 for a boat trip to Playa Fantasia and $173.85 for a full day on Tortuga Island.
- December to April is the dry season; May to November brings afternoon rain, full waterfalls and the quietest beaches, and in our review count whale sightings on the Tortuga crossing peak in September.
Things to Do in Jacó: What's Worth Your Time
The best things to do in Jacó mix the beach town itself with the rainforest, rivers and islands a short drive or boat ride away. In town you can learn to surf on Jacó Beach and eat your way through the sodas on a food walk; in the hills behind it you can ride an ATV to a swimming waterfall, zipline with ocean views or hike up a river past ten cascades. Thirty minutes north, Carara National Park and the Tárcoles River hold some of the best wildlife on the Pacific coast, and from the Los Sueños marina just north of town, boats leave for the hidden cove of Playa Fantasia and the white sand of Tortuga Island.
Our pick if you only book one tour: ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's three-hour ride to a jungle waterfall. With 908 reviews at 4.9, it is the most-reviewed tour in our Jacó comparison, and it shows you the hills, the ocean views and a waterfall swim in one morning.

The 9 Best Things to Do in Jacó, Reviewed
Each of these is the top pick from our detailed guide to that activity, where you'll find every alternative compared. Prices are per adult unless noted.
Ride an ATV to a Jungle Waterfall
$105, passengers aged 4 to 15 $38 · 4.9 from 908 reviews · 3 hrs
ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica takes small groups up dirt trails into the hills behind Jacó, with stops for ocean views, toucans and monkeys if you're lucky, and a short hike down to a waterfall you can swim in. Drivers need to be 16 with a license; younger children ride as passengers.
Bring clothes you don't mind getting muddy, especially after rain. Guests rate the guides highly, but a few waited longer than promised for the photo package. Our Jacó ATV tour guide compares ten rides.
Walk Carara National Park for Scarlet Macaws
$45 with park ticket · 4.9 from 256 reviews · 2 to 3 hrs
Carara, 30 minutes north, is where dry forest meets rainforest, and a guide with a spotting scope finds macaws, monkeys, poison dart frogs and bats you would walk past. G&R Adventures includes the park ticket, which is sold only online.
Go at 08:00, when animals are most active. Our Carara National Park tour guide covers tickets, hours and five more tours.
See the Tárcoles Crocodiles by Boat
$40, $30 ages 4 to 12 · 4.8 from 324 reviews · 1 hr 45 min
A boat trip on the Tárcoles River, 20 km north, past a dense population of American crocodiles (a Universidad Nacional study found more on the Tárcoles than on two neighbouring Pacific rivers) and plenty of river birds. You can also see crocodiles free from the bridge on the coastal road.
We chose Jungle Crocodile Safari because guests describe watching the crocodiles rather than guides feeding them, which happens on some other boats. Our Tárcoles River crocodile tour guide explains the difference.
Spend a Day on Tortuga Island
$173.85, $142 ages 4 to 13 · 4.9 from 1,668 reviews · 8 hrs
Costa Cat's catamaran leaves Los Sueños for a 45-minute crossing to Tortuga Island's white-sand beach, with snorkeling, a banana boat, a short hike, lunch and an open bar, in its own beach area with chairs.
Trips sold as "from Jacó" through Puntarenas cost less but add a long drive each way. Our Tortuga Island tour from Jacó guide compares them.
Snorkel at Playa Fantasia
$158.94, $132 ages 4 to 9 · 4.8 from 291 reviews · 4.5 hrs
Sealounge's catamaran runs to Playa Fantasia, a jungle-backed cove reached only by sea, for snorkeling, wildlife and time on the beach, a shorter alternative to the Tortuga day.
Our Jacó boat tours guide compares the sunset cruises, private boats and island trips.
Zipline with Ocean Views
$75 · 4.9 from 136 reviews · 2 hrs · from age 4
Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park's canopy tour runs cables over the forest above Los Sueños with views down to the Pacific, 10 minutes from Jacó. Children from 4 can ride, and the weight limit is 250 lb.
Our Jacó zipline guide compares seven courses, including one that is really 85 km away.
Hike Up a River Past 10 Waterfalls
$55, $75 with lunch · 4.9 from 188 reviews · 2.5 to 3 hrs
Finca los Solís leads a hike up a river five minutes from Jacó past ten waterfalls and eight swimming holes, with a farm lunch if you want it.
It is harder than it sounds: ropes, boulders and swimming between pools. Our Jacó waterfall hike guide covers easier ways to the falls.
Take a Surf Lesson on Jacó Beach
$49, $50 ages 5 to 11 · 5.0 from 510 reviews · 2 hrs
Jacó Beach has small morning waves that suit beginners, especially in the dry season, and guests describe The Surfer Factory's instructors getting first-timers standing up within the lesson. Many also buy the photo and drone package.
Confirm whether you're booking a private or semi-private lesson. Our Jacó surf lessons guide compares the schools.
Eat Your Way Through Jacó
$99, $109 with a sunset drink · 5.0 from 333 reviews · 3 to 4 hrs
Jaco Food & Culture Tours' afternoon walk tastes caldosa, chifrijo, seafood and a Churchill dessert, with a beachfront stop at sunset and drinks included. Book it early in your trip: the guide's restaurant tips are half the value.
Our Jacó food tour guide compares it with a private walk, a farm lunch and a chocolate workshop.
Several of these are sold as private tours too; see our Jacó private tours guide for boats and guides just for your group.
Free Things to Do, Jacó Beach and Jacó Nightlife
The nine experiences above are all paid tours. Jacó is just as much a beach town, and some of its best moments cost little or nothing.
Free and low-cost things to do
- See the crocodiles for free. The bridge over the Tárcoles River on the coastal road, 20 km north, is a classic stop for watching crocodiles on the banks below. Keep your bag close: Canada's travel advice names the crocodile viewing area among the Pacific coast spots where thefts are reported.
- Walk Carara on your own. Entry to Carara National Park is $10 plus tax for adults and $5 plus tax for ages 2 to 12, bought online in advance, and the short trails near the visitor centre are easy without a guide. Our Carara National Park tour guide explains what a guide adds.
- Find the murals. Jacó's murals line the walk along the beach; the food walk passes them, and you can see them on your own on the way to dinner.
- Watch the sunset. The beach faces the Pacific, so every clear evening ends with the sun going down over the water.
Spend time on Jacó Beach
Jacó Beach runs the length of town, and most of the activity sits in front of the centre: surf schools, board rentals and beach bars. It is a surf beach first. The waves break close to shore, and rip currents form there in every season (our month-by-month guides track when the swell is biggest). Lifeguards cover only part of the beach and not every day, and Canada's travel advice notes that very few beaches in Costa Rica are supervised at all, so swim only where others are swimming, stay out of the water after drinking or after dark, and keep children to wading depth.
Families who want calmer water usually drive north: Playa Mantas, about 20 minutes away, is a sheltered cove with gentler water. Even there conditions change with the tide and swell, so check before anyone goes in. If you want to be in the surf at Jacó, a lesson is the safer way in; our Jacó surf lessons guide compares the schools.
Jacó at night: nightlife and night wildlife
Jacó has the liveliest nightlife on the central Pacific coast, and most of it is within a few blocks. Bars, clubs and late restaurants are concentrated downtown on and around Avenida Pastor Díaz, the main street one block back from the sand. Evenings usually start with sunset drinks at a beach bar such as Clarita's, then move to the street's bars and clubs, several of which have DJs and dancing on weekends and live music on some nights. Most bars charge no entry fee; a few charge a few dollars for a wristband or cup on busy nights. Friday and Saturday are the busiest nights, and Semana Santa and the dry-season holidays fill the town.
Keep it practical. The US government advises visitors to Costa Rica to avoid walking alone on poorly lit streets or beaches, and Canada lists Jacó among the Pacific coast areas of particular concern for theft. Carry little cash, leave passports in the hotel safe, and take a taxi back rather than walking the beach after dark.
If you would rather spend the night looking for animals, a guided night walk up a forest river near town looks for frogs, snakes and owls; our Jacó wildlife tours guide compares it with every other way to see wildlife near Jacó.
Other tours worth knowing about
- Ride a horse on the beach or in the hills. Our Jacó horseback riding guide compares six rides; several were on sale in October 2026.
- Book something just for your group. Our Jacó private tours guide covers private speedboats, catamaran charters and guides.
- Travelling with kids? Our best things to do in Jacó for families guide prices nine picks for two adults and two children, with minimum ages.
Best Time to Do Things in Jacó
Jacó's tours run all year, but the season changes what each day looks like. This summary comes from our month-by-month guides, which use rainfall records from the nearest weather stations at Quepos and Puntarenas.
| Months | What to expect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| December to April | Dry season: sunny days, February the driest month, Semana Santa in March or April the busiest week | Beach days, Tortuga crossings, ATV views |
| May to June | Green season begins: bright mornings, afternoon rain, quiet beaches | Morning tours, lower crowds |
| July to August | A midsummer dip in the rain, school holidays in early July, the first humpback whales | Families on holiday, whale watching on the crossing |
| September to October | The wettest months, with the quietest beaches and lowest hotel prices; September has the most whale mentions in Tortuga Island reviews | Whales, full waterfalls, value |
| November | The rain eases week by week toward the dry season | Waterfalls at their fullest |
For detail, see our guides to Jacó in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.
How Much Do Things to Do in Jacó Cost?
Most tours in Jacó cost $40 to $105 per adult, and a boat trip $158.94 to $173.85. What matters more than the headline price is what's included: the Carara walk includes the park ticket and the Tortuga trip includes meals and drinks, while the crocodile boat and Carara walk don't include transport from town.
The Carara walk ($90 for two) and the Tárcoles crocodile boat ($80 for two), driving yourself.
The ATV ride ($210 for two) and the zipline ($150 for two).
Costa Cat's all-inclusive Tortuga Island day, with meals and drinks.
Bring cash for tips: they are not included on most tours.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing across our Jacó guides is that the best-rated tours are the ones that keep things simple and honest: a guide with a scope instead of animals drawn in with food, a short crossing from Los Sueños instead of a long drive to Puntarenas, and clear pickup details the day before.
Tips for Planning Things to Do in Jacó
- Go early. Wildlife is most active after dawn, and green-season rain usually arrives in the afternoon.
- Check where tours leave from. Carara and the crocodile boats are 30 minutes north; some Tortuga trips go via Puntarenas, a much longer drive.
- Skip tours that feed animals. Feeding wildlife is fined under Costa Rica's wildlife law, and our wildlife tours guide flags the tours where guests describe it.
- Buy Carara tickets online. They are not sold at the gate; the G&R walk includes them.
- Bring water shoes and bug spray. Waterfall hikes, river walks and the Tortuga beach all have rocky stretches, and mosquitoes come up often in the forest.
- Carry cash for tips and extras. Photo packages, island extras and tips are usually paid separately.
- Choose where to stay. Our best hotels in Jacó guide ranks 12 hotels in Jacó, Playa Hermosa and Los Sueños by guest score, with sampled prices.
How We Selected These Experiences
The Costa Rica Day Trip team built a detailed guide for each activity in and around Jacó, comparing every tour with recent reviews on price, inclusions, cancellation terms and guest feedback. The nine experiences here are the top picks from those guides, rechecked live on 20 October 2026. We required a guest review in the last six months for every tour, left out tours where guests describe feeding wildlife, and favored tours that leave from close to Jacó over those that route through distant ports. Weather facts come from our month-by-month Jacó guides. The horseback rides are listed separately because their headline prices were temporary sales at the time of writing.
