Six Jacó boat tours compared, from Playa Fantasia snorkel and sunset catamarans to Tortuga Island day trips and private boats, with what each includes, how many people share the boat and which ones you cannot cancel.

What You Should Know

  • Boat tours from Herradura Bay and Los Sueños, just north of Jacó, go to two places: Playa Fantasia, a jungle-backed cove reached only by sea, and Tortuga Island in the Gulf of Nicoya.
  • Playa Fantasia trips last about four and a half hours, mornings for snorkeling and afternoons for sunset. Tortuga Island takes a full day, leaving around 07:00 and returning late afternoon.
  • Shared catamarans cost $158.94 to $173.85 per adult with lunch and drinks. Private boats cost $95 to $200 per person but need four or five people to book.
  • Boat size changes the day more than the destination: guests describe one Tortuga catamaran carrying 80 people with a party feel, while the Playa Fantasia catamaran caps guests at 25.

Jacó Boat Tours: Where They Go and What You Are Booking

A Jacó boat tour leaves from Herradura Bay or the Los Sueños marina, a few minutes north of town, rather than from Jacó Beach itself. From there the boats go to one of two places. Playa Fantasia is a small white-sand cove between two headlands that you can only reach by sea; its operator says it lies within a wildlife refuge set up to protect scarlet macaws, and it is where most Jacó snorkeling happens. Tortuga Island, about 45 minutes across the Gulf of Nicoya, is a bigger, busier beach day with more boats and more activities.

Fantasia or Tortuga? The biggest difference is time on the water: Playa Fantasia is a short hop up the coast, while Tortuga Island means a 45-minute crossing each way, more from Puntarenas. Playa Fantasia is closer, quieter and works as a half day; Tortuga Island is a full day with a longer crossing and, on the big catamarans, a crowded beach. Snorkeling at both is pleasant rather than spectacular: guests see reef fish, and sometimes turtles or rays, but one Playa Fantasia guest saw few fish. Choose on the kind of day you want, not on the snorkeling alone. The crossings are often the highlight: dolphins appear in dozens of recent reviews and whales in more than a dozen, and captains slow down when they spot them.

What to Expect on a Playa Fantasia Boat Tour

About four and a half hours from Jacó to Playa Fantasia and back.

  1. 0107:45

    Pickup in Jacó

A van collects you about 45 minutes before departure and drives you to Herradura Beach.

  2. 02

    Shuttle to the catamaran

A small boat takes you out to the catamaran, where fresh fruit, drinks and a safety talk wait.

  3. 03

    Cruise along the coast

A short sail north past the headlands, watching for dolphins and seabirds.

  4. 04

    Snorkeling at Playa Fantasia

Jump in off the boat or swim ashore, then snorkel the rocks with the crew pointing out fish.

  5. 05

    Lunch on the beach

Kebabs grilled on the sand, then hammocks, paddleboards and boogie boards.

  6. 06

    Sail back

Back to Herradura and the van to your hotel.

This follows Sealounge Catamaran's morning snorkel tour to Playa Fantasia. The Tortuga Island trips follow the same pattern over a full day, with a longer crossing. Most guests find the beach day is what they remember: reviews dwell on the grilled lunch, the hammocks and the crew far more than on the fish.

Our take (morning or sunset): Book the morning trip for snorkeling, when the water is usually calmer, and the 13:30 sailing for the light and the ride home at sunset. If anyone in your group gets seasick, the short Playa Fantasia crossing is easier than the run to Tortuga Island.

Best overall

Sealounge Catamaran: Playa Fantasia Snorkeling & Wildlife

$158.94 · 4.8 from 291 reviews · 4.5 hrs · Wed, Fri, Sun · up to 25

A van collects you in Jacó, a small boat shuttles you from Herradura Beach to the catamaran, and you cruise to Playa Fantasia for snorkeling, paddleboards, hammocks and a kebab lunch grilled on the beach. Guests get ashore by jumping off the roof, climbing down the ladder and swimming in with a noodle, or riding in on the shuttle boat.

Reviews dwell on the crew and the food more than the snorkeling, which is pleasant rather than outstanding. We'd give it the edge over the Tortuga catamarans for families and couples, since the 25-guest cap keeps it calm. The operator insists it is not a booze cruise, though drinks flow all day. Expect some swell: several guests found the water choppy, with a strong pull at high tide and rougher snorkeling at low tide. There is a proper toilet ashore.

Best sunset

Sealounge Catamaran: Jacó Sunset Cruise to Playa Fantasia

$158.94 · 4.7 from 197 reviews · 4.5 hrs · Tue, Thu, Sat at 13:30

The same boat, crew and beach as the snorkel tour, leaving in the early afternoon so you sail home at sunset. Guests describe a BBQ lunch on the beach, dolphins on the way back and, for one group, an amberjack caught on a trolling line.

We'd book this instead of the morning tour if the beach and the light matter more than snorkeling. One April trip was cut short when waves and current picked up, so keep a spare day if you can.

Biggest island day

Vista Los Sueños: All-Inclusive Tortuga Island Catamaran

$173.85 · 4.8 from 172 reviews · 9 hrs · all sales final

A full day from the Los Sueños marina: breakfast on board, a 45-minute crossing, then snorkeling, a banana boat, a short hike and a buffet lunch on Tortuga Island, with rum punch all day. Most guests love it, and some saw whales, dolphins and turtles on the crossing.

Three things to know first. The policy is all sales final, so you cannot cancel for a refund. One April 2026 guest counted 80 people aboard, and others describe a packed boat and a loud party mood. Staff throw bread to draw fish in while you snorkel. The included cocktails are light; guests who wanted stronger drinks bought a package on board ($25 for five or $45 for ten). We'd only choose this if you want a lively, social day.

Best private island day

Subwing Costa Rica: Private Tortuga Island Speedboat

From $155 each for 10 · $200 each for 5 or 6 · 5.0 from 85 reviews · 8.5 hrs

Your own speedboat for the day, with homemade empanadas for breakfast, a hot lunch, Subwing tow-boards for "flying" underwater and a stop to see spider monkeys. The owner takes groups away from the crowds after lunch, and 81 of 85 reviews are five stars. We like this option for mixed-age groups, since guests describe the day being shaped around them, from Subwing rides for the adventurous to a quiet beach for everyone else.

The catch is the five-person minimum, so it costs at least $1,000. One guest describes feeding the monkeys and fish, which Costa Rica's wildlife law prohibits, so ask the crew not to.

Cheapest private boat

VIP Boat Cruise CR: Private Tropical Catamaran

$95 each (minimum 4) · 4.7 from 38 reviews · 4 hrs

A slow, private half day from Herradura Beach with fruit, snacks, beer, snorkel gear and a trolling line, plus a stop at a beach reached by boat. Guests like the relaxed pace and the hosts.

But the boat is old and small, and several guests found the sail out of use, so it runs on its motor; one called it nothing like the photos. We'd book it for an easy private outing at a low price, not for a sailing catamaran experience. Our Jacó private tours guide compares it with the other private boats and charters.

Not from Jacó

Turismo Marítimo del Pacífico: Isla Tortuga VIP

$115 (minimum 4) + $20 transfer · 4.6 from 149 reviews · 7 to 10 hrs

Despite the name, the boat leaves from Puntarenas, one to two hours' drive from Jacó each way. The day takes in the Tárcoles crocodile bridge, spider monkeys on Negritos Island and five hours on Tortuga Island with lunch.

We wouldn't choose this as a first option: at least five guests had it cancelled at the last minute, two of them for low numbers, and others found the drive and the wait at the port long.

How Much Does a Jacó Boat Tour Cost?

Shared boat tours from Jacó cost $158.94 to $173.85 per adult, with lunch and drinks included. Private boats work out at $95 to $200 per person but have a four- or five-person minimum. What matters more than the headline price is the cancellation policy: one Tortuga catamaran is all sales final.

Playa Fantasia, family of four$581.88

Two adults and two children aged 4 to 9 on either Sealounge Catamaran tour, with pickup, lunch and drinks included.

Tortuga Island, family of four$631.70

Two adults and two children aged 4 to 13 on Vista Los Sueños' all-inclusive catamaran. Remember it cannot be refunded.

Private boat for your group$380 to $1,550

VIP Boat Cruise CR for four at $380, or Subwing Costa Rica's Tortuga speedboat from $1,000 for five to $1,550 for ten.

For a group of eight or more, Subwing's private speedboat ($170 each for eight) costs about the same per person as the shared catamarans and gives you the boat to yourselves.

Our Take

What we see again and again in reviews is that the number of people on the boat shapes the day more than where it goes: guests on the capped Playa Fantasia catamaran describe a relaxed beach day, while some on the biggest Tortuga boat describe a crowded party. Check the group size before you book.

Tips for a Boat Tour from Jacó

  • Read the cancellation policy. Vista Los Sueños' Tortuga catamaran is all sales final; the other tours here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  • Book Playa Fantasia early in your trip. We'd make sure to leave a spare day: each Sealounge tour runs only three days a week, and a rough sea can cut a trip short.
  • Bring your own towel. Sealounge Catamaran does not provide them, and most boats are wet from the swim ashore.
  • Expect to get wet getting ashore. At Playa Fantasia guests jump in or swim from the ladder with a float, or ride the shuttle boat in.
  • Budget for extras on Tortuga Island. The island is busy and commercial, and guests on more than one tour paid extra for some activities and stronger drinks.
  • Take seasickness tablets for Tortuga Island. The 45-minute crossing can be choppy; one guest prone to seasickness suggests being first in line to reboard for the return.
  • Confirm the meeting point. Boats leave from Herradura or Los Sueños, not Jacó Beach, and one Playa Fantasia guest was given the wrong meeting address. Use the pickup if it is offered.
  • Do not feed the wildlife. Some crews throw bread for fish or let guests feed spider monkeys; Costa Rica's wildlife law prohibits feeding wild animals.
  • Bring lotion sunscreen. Sealounge does not allow spray sunscreen on board, and you spend most of the trip in the sun.
  • Visiting in April? Our Jacó in April guide covers the warm, calm mornings before the rains, which boat trips run before Playa Fantasia departures resume in mid-May, and April hotel prices.
  • Visiting in July? Our Jacó in July guide covers the calm midsummer crossings, the start of the southern humpback whale season and early-July school-holiday prices.
  • Visiting in September? Our Jacó in September guide covers the best whale odds of the year on the crossing, plus what bigger swell means for seasickness.
  • More near Jacó? Our Jacó zipline guide and Jacó horseback riding guide cover the land-based half days. For a full day at sea, our Tortuga Island tour from Jacó guide compares every island trip, including where each one leaves from.
  • Planning the rest of your trip? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge. Travelling with kids? Our best things to do in Jacó for families guide adds minimum ages and prices for a family of four.

How We Selected These Tours

The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every boat, catamaran, snorkel and island tour listed for Jacó and checked each live listing on 20 October 2026: price by age, minimum group size, departure days, boat type, inclusions, cancellation policy and the full star distribution. We required a guest review in the past six months and a rating of at least 4.5. Two sunset cruises were left out for having no recent reviews, and two Tortuga Island tours were left out for ratings of 3.7 and 4.1. Sport fishing charters are not covered here. We then read the most recent reviews of all six tours, plus their most recent one- to three-star reviews, paying attention to boat size, crowding, cancellations and how the crews treat wildlife. The top pick weighs review quality and volume, group size, what the day includes and price.
