October is the tail of Jacó's green season: rain on most days, the quietest beaches of the year and, in our check, the lowest hotel prices we found anywhere on the calendar. Here is what late October 2026 looks like, what to book and how to plan around the rain.

What You Should Know

  • October is still deep green season. Quepos, the nearest long-term station to the south, averages 534 mm over 26.7 rain days and Puntarenas, to the north, 24.5, so expect rain most days, usually after a usable morning.
  • It is the best value we found all year. For the remaining nights of October 2026, our hotel sample came in at about $129 to $147 a night, against about $162 to $187 that the same hotels were quoting for October 2027.
  • The Playa Fantasia catamaran is running. Sealounge's half-day snorkel trip to a beach reached only by boat had open dates on every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday we checked in late October 2026.
  • The whale season is fading: 6 of 61 Costa Cat Tortuga Island reviews posted in October mention whales, against 27 of 84 in September. Turtles are still nesting and hatching at Playa Hermosa, just south of town.

October in Jacó: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best October 2026 window: Sunday 25 to Wednesday 28 October. In our hotel sample these were the cheapest nights left in the month, at about $134, and the Playa Fantasia catamaran sails on both Sunday 25 and Wednesday 28.

💰 October hotel prices in our sample (Jacó, 3 to 4 star, room for two):
Late October 2026: Wednesday 21 ~$129 · Saturday 24 ~$147 · Sunday 25 to Wednesday 28 ~$134 · Saturday 31 ~$144
For comparison, October 2027 a year ahead: weeknights ~$160–173 · Saturdays ~$187
Medians of 16 to 23 Jacó hotels for the remaining October 2026 nights and 10 to 15 for October 2027, checked 20 October 2026. A small sample, so treat the pattern as more reliable than the exact figures.

Planning Jacó for October 2026? October is the last full month of Jacó's green season and, on our numbers, the cheapest time of year to stay. The weather figures here are long-term normals from the nearest official stations, not a forecast; the prices and schedules are what we found for the rest of October 2026 when we checked on 20 October.

An October trip to Jacó means rain on most days, usually after a brighter morning, and beaches, restaurants and tours that are close to empty on weekdays. It is not a sun holiday. What it does offer is low prices, small groups on every tour, green hills, the last of the humpback whales and turtles nesting and hatching on the refuge beach at Playa Hermosa.

We'd lean toward October for flexible, budget-minded travelers who can plan around the morning. Most people don't realize how much cheaper short-notice green-season rooms can be: in our check, the remaining October 2026 nights cost about 20% less than the same hotels were quoting for October 2027.

Who October suits best:

  • Budget travelers: the lowest hotel rates we found anywhere in the year.
  • Crowd-averse travelers: schools are in session and the town is quiet.
  • Boat and beach days: the Playa Fantasia catamaran and Tortuga Island trips both run, with the morning usually the driest part of the day.
  • Sun-seekers: less ideal. The dry season starts in December.

Temperature and Humidity

Highs run around 30°C (86°F), with nights near 23°C (73°F). Quepos to the south averages 30.0°C and 22.6°C in October, and Puntarenas, across the Gulf of Nicoya, 31.6°C and 23.2°C. Humidity is high and skies are often cloudy. Sunrise is about 05:27 all month, and sunset moves earlier, from 17:29 on 1 October to 17:16 on 31 October.

Rain Pattern

October is almost as wet as September. Quepos averages 534 mm over 26.7 rain days and Puntarenas 279 mm over 24.5 days, so expect roughly 24 to 27 days with some rain around Jacó. The typical day still starts brighter and turns wet in the afternoon or evening, though longer rainy spells are common. Puntarenas averages about five and a half hours of sunshine a day. November brings the change: Quepos drops to about 349 mm and Puntarenas to 132 mm as the dry season approaches.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The sea stays near 28°C (82°F). Green-season swell is still up, which suits intermediate surfers and strengthens rip currents. After heavy rain, streams carry debris onto the beaches: one November guest on the Playa Fantasia trip described driftwood and plastic washed up from stream runoff. Trails are muddy and slippery, and rivers run high.

October in Jacó: Crowds and Prices Week by Week

October has no national holidays and Costa Rican schools are in session, so it is one of the quietest months of the year. Because the month is already under way, our 2026 prices cover the nights that are still bookable.

  • 21 to 24 October: in our sample, Wednesday 21 cost about $129, the cheapest night we found all year, Friday 23 about $142 and Saturday 24 about $147.
  • 25 to 28 October: about $134 a night from Sunday to Wednesday.
  • 29 to 31 October: about $144 on Friday 30 and Saturday 31.

The biggest difference between October and the rest of the green season is that short-notice rooms are genuinely cheap. The same hotels in our sample quoted about $160 to $173 for October 2027 weeknights and $187 for a Saturday, which suggests that rates set a year ahead overstate what you will pay if you book closer to the date.

Tour availability for the rest of October 2026 was wide open when we checked. Only a few dates showed as unavailable: the Tortuga Island catamaran on 27 October, the ocean-view zipline on 28 October and the Playa Fantasia sunset cruise on 24 October.

Low Season on the Water: Playa Fantasia, the Last Whales and Turtles

October's signature draw near Jacó is a quiet day on the water. Both of the area's best-known boat trips are running, and the last whales and the turtle season add a wildlife bonus.

Playa Fantasia by Catamaran

Sealounge's 50 ft catamaran sails from near Jacó at 08:30 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays to Playa Fantasia, a beach reached only by boat, for snorkeling, paddleboards, a grilled lunch on the sand and an open bar, back early in the afternoon. A sunset version sails at 13:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Low-season groups are small: one October group was 12 guests with 5 crew. Our Jacó boat tours guide compares it with the private charters.

Tortuga Island

The Tortuga Island catamaran from Los Sueños runs daily at 07:15, a longer full day with its own beach area on the island. It is the better pick for a full day out; Playa Fantasia is the shorter, quieter half day.

The Last of the Whales

Southern humpbacks are reported on the Tortuga crossing mostly from July to November. In October the season is fading: 6 of 61 Costa Cat reviews posted in October mention whales, about one in ten, against one in three in September, and 6 of 82 in November.

Turtles at Playa Hermosa

Olive ridley turtles nest from July to December at the Playa Hermosa–Punta Mala National Wildlife Refuge, just south of Jacó, and eggs hatch after about 45 to 50 days, so October is in the middle of both nesting and hatching. At night, use only red or amber light, keep at least 10 metres from turtles and never touch nests or hatchlings.

What to Watch in October: Rain, Runoff and Rips

October is wet, and a good trip is one that plans around it.

Rain on Most Days

Book boats, rides and walks for the morning and keep afternoons flexible. Heavy rain can postpone a boat trip, so build in a spare day, and choose tours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, as all of our picks offer.

Beach Debris After Storms

Green-season storms wash driftwood and rubbish down the rivers. One November guest on the Playa Fantasia trip found debris from stream runoff and plastic on the beach, though they still loved the day. Expect beaches near river mouths to look their worst after heavy rain.

Rip Currents

Green-season swell keeps Jacó's rip currents strong. Swim near the municipal lifeguard towers, follow their flags, avoid darker, foamy channels flowing out to sea, and if you are caught, swim parallel to the shore and raise an arm. The emergency number is 911.

Confirm Small Bookings

One October 2025 guest who arranged a Playa Fantasia trip only by WhatsApp arrived to find the crew had no record of it. Book through a platform that sends a confirmation, and keep it handy.

Where to Stay on a October Trip to Jacó

October is low season. In our sample, rates for the rest of October 2026 were among the lowest of the year, and short-notice stays came out cheaper than booking a year ahead.

Most visitors stay in the center, near Avenida Pastor Díaz, within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and tour pickups. The south end of Jacó Beach is quieter, and Los Sueños on Playa Herradura, about 10 minutes north, is the resort-and-marina choice and the departure point for the Tortuga Island catamarans.

Best in October

We'd give the Playa Fantasia catamaran the edge this month: it is a half day, it leaves at 08:30 and it is back before most afternoon storms, and low-season groups are small. If you want a full day out and one more chance of a whale, choose the Tortuga Island trip instead.

Rain-Proof Choices

A morning in Carara is usually done before the rain, and the night walk and the food walk make good evening plans. We'd only book the waterfall hike this month if you are fit, sure-footed and flexible on dates.

More October Activities Worth Knowing About

These October-friendly experiences do not have their own guides on this site yet.

Playa Hermosa

Five minutes south of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is a powerful beach break for experienced surfers only, and its beach is the turtle-nesting refuge. Stick to marked areas at night and follow the refuge's rules.

Herradura Bay

The bay beside the Los Sueños marina, about 20 minutes north, is more sheltered than open Jacó Beach and the gentler choice for a swim when green-season swell is up.

Low-Season Dining

With the town at its quietest, Jacó's beachfront restaurants are usually easy to get into without a booking, which makes October a good month to try the places a dry-season crowd would fill.

Early Sunsets

Sunset falls from 17:29 to 17:16 through October, so plan beach walks for the late afternoon, when breaks in the cloud often bring dramatic light.

Our Take

October rewards booking late: in our check, the remaining October 2026 nights cost about 20% less than the same hotels quoted for October 2027, and every tour had open dates, so a flexible traveler can wait for a decent forecast and still get a room and a boat seat.

Tips for an October Trip to Jacó

  • Book boats and rides for the morning: the Playa Fantasia catamaran at 08:30 and Tortuga Island at 07:15 are back before most of the rain.
  • Check the weather a few days out, then book: rooms and tours were widely available at short notice when we checked.
  • Get a written booking confirmation: one guest who arranged a trip only by WhatsApp arrived to find no record of it.
  • Bring your own towel for Playa Fantasia: towels are not provided.
  • Pack rain gear and grippy shoes: trails are muddy and rocks are slippery.
  • Swim near a lifeguard tower: green-season swell keeps Jacó's rip currents strong.

How We Put This Guide Together

Jacó has no long-running official weather station of its own, so the weather figures are World Meteorological Organization normals for the two nearest stations, Quepos (1984 to 2003) and Puntarenas, with Jacó placed between them; sea temperature is a long-term average from published sea-temperature records, and sunrise and sunset are calculated for Jacó's coordinates. These are normals, not a forecast. Because October 2026 was already under way when we wrote this guide, hotel prices are the median nightly rate for a room for two at 3 to 4 star Jacó hotels for each remaining October 2026 night, checked on 20 October 2026, with October 2027 dates from the same check for comparison; only 10 to 23 hotels quoted, so treat them as a pattern. Tour prices, schedules, cancellation terms and late-October availability were checked live the same day. The whale counts and the group-size, debris and booking notes come from reading every review of the Playa Fantasia catamaran and Costa Cat's Tortuga Island trip and sorting them by the month they were posted. Turtle-nesting dates for the Playa Hermosa refuge come from Costa Rican news reporting. Ratings in the tables are our editorial judgment of how October suits each activity, not guest scores.
