July is the busiest month of Jacó's green season: Costa Rican school holidays and northern summer trips push up early-July hotel rates, while the midsummer dry spell, calm crossings to Tortuga Island and the first humpback whales and nesting turtles make it one of the better wet-season months. Here is how to plan it.

What You Should Know

  • July is green season with a midsummer dip in the rain, which Costa Rica's weather service dates to about 15 July to 10 August and which is strongest in the North Pacific. Puntarenas falls to 18 rain days in July; Quepos, to the south, still records 26.
  • Early July is the green season's price peak. In our hotel sample, Saturdays 3 and 10 July cost about $215 and weeknights up to $198, against about $162 by 28 July. In 2026, Costa Rica's mid-year school break ran from 6 to 17 July.
  • The sea calms down. More Costa Cat Tortuga Island reviews posted in July describe a smooth or calm crossing than in any other month, and July is when southern humpback whales start to appear in reviews.
  • Olive ridley turtles begin nesting at the Playa Hermosa wildlife refuge, just south of Jacó, in July, and the season runs to December. Hatchlings follow about 45 to 50 days after each nest is laid.

July in Jacó: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best July window: 19 to 31 July, midweek. In our hotel sample, weeknights fell from about $198 in the first week to about $162 by 28 July, the likely end of the school break, and the second half of the month falls inside the midsummer dip in the rain.

Planning Jacó for July 2027? July is the busiest month of Jacó's green season. Costa Rican families head to the beach during the mid-year school break, northern summer holidays bring visitors from abroad, and the rain usually eases a little in the second half of the month. The weather figures here are long-term normals from the nearest official stations, not a forecast; the prices and schedules are what we found for July 2027.

A July trip to Jacó feels livelier than June, with more families on the beach and in the surf, and pricier than any other green-season month, at least for the first two weeks. The upside is the weather and the sea: July often brings a drier spell between the June and August rains, the crossing to Tortuga Island is usually smooth, and July is when the first humpback whales of the southern season and the first nesting turtles of the year appear.

We'd lean toward the second half of July for most travelers. In our view the last ten days offer the best balance of the month: school-holiday rates are behind you, and the midsummer dip, if it comes, is at its most likely.

Who July suits best:

  • Families on school holidays: lively beaches, plenty of tours and a better chance of dry spells than in June or August.
  • Boat-trip lovers: calm crossings to Tortuga Island and the first chance of southern humpback whales.
  • Wildlife fans: turtle nesting begins at Playa Hermosa, and Carara is green and quiet in the mornings.
  • Bargain hunters: less ideal in early July, when green-season rates peak in our sample.

Temperature and Humidity

Highs run around 31°C (88°F) and nights about 23°C (73°F). Quepos to the south averages 30.5°C and 22.8°C in July, and Puntarenas, across the Gulf of Nicoya, 32.2°C and 23.2°C. It is humid, with more cloud than in the dry season. Sunrise moves from 05:22 to 05:29 and sunset holds near 18:02, among the latest of the year.

Rain Pattern

July is where Jacó's two neighbouring stations disagree most. Quepos, to the south, averages 445 mm over 25.7 rain days, slightly more than in June, while Puntarenas, to the north, drops to 176 mm over 18 days, fewer than in June. The reason is the canícula, a midsummer dip in the rain that Costa Rica's weather service, the IMN, places at about 15 July to 10 August and that is most marked in the North Pacific. Jacó sits between the two, at the southern edge of that effect, so expect roughly 18 to 26 days with some rain and a reasonable chance of a drier stretch in the second half of the month. Most people don't realize the veranillo de San Juan, the better-known "little summer", is a much shorter pause around 24 June, not a July event.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The sea stays near 29°C (84°F). Green-season swell is larger than in the dry months, which suits intermediate surfers. The water around Tortuga Island can be cloudy for snorkeling after rain, but July crossings are generally smooth. Trails in the hills and at Carara are muddy and humid, and mosquitoes are active after rain.

July in Jacó: Crowds and Prices Week by Week

July has the clearest price pattern of the green season: high at the start, back to normal by the end.

  • 1 to 11 July (holiday peak): in our sample, Saturday 3 July and Saturday 10 July cost about $215 and Wednesday 7 July about $198. In 2026, Costa Rica's mid-year school break ran from 6 to 17 July; the 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026, but our rates suggest hotels expect a similar window.
  • 12 to 18 July: easing. Wednesday 14 July was about $179 and Saturday 17 July about $198.
  • 19 to 25 July: close to normal on weeknights (about $165 on Wednesday 21 July), but Saturday 24 July rose to about $211, the eve of Guanacaste Day, a public holiday on 25 July that falls on a Sunday in 2027. Sunday 25 July was about $190.
  • 26 to 31 July: back to the green-season base, about $162 on Wednesday 28 July and $187 on Saturday 31 July.

Tour prices do not change in July, and every tour we cover had open dates all month; the Tortuga Island catamaran showed only 8 July as unavailable. What typically happens is that family-friendly tours fill first during the school break, so book Tortuga Island, ziplines and surf lessons ahead if your dates fall in early July.

Calm Seas, the First Whales and Nesting Turtles

July's signature draw in Jacó is the sea. The calmer conditions of the midsummer dip, the return of humpback whales and the start of turtle nesting make it the most interesting wet-season month on the water.

Smooth Crossings to Tortuga Island

Of all the months, July has the most Costa Cat reviews describing a smooth or calm crossing to Tortuga Island: 12 of the 168 posted in July, more than in January. Guests describe a 45-minute ride from Los Sueños, dolphins on the way and warm, calm water off the island's beach. Snorkeling is more mixed, with some July guests finding the water cloudy. Our Tortuga Island tour guide compares the six ways to get there.

The First Southern Humpbacks

Humpback whales from the Southern Hemisphere visit Costa Rica's Pacific coast in the second half of the year, and July is when they start to appear in Tortuga Island reviews: 5 of 168 posted in July mention whales, including a mother and calf. Sightings climb sharply after that, to 16 of 130 in August and 27 of 84 in September, so July is a chance, not a promise.

Turtle Nesting Begins at Playa Hermosa

Just south of Jacó, the beach at Playa Hermosa is part of the Playa Hermosa–Punta Mala National Wildlife Refuge, where olive ridley turtles nest from July to December. Each female lays 80 to 120 eggs, which hatch after about 45 to 50 days. Costa Rica's park service and coast guard patrol the beach against egg poaching. If you walk the beach at night, use only red or amber light, stay at least 10 metres from nesting turtles and never touch nests or eggs, as local conservation groups ask.

Private Boats

If you want a smaller boat for whale-watching or snorkeling, our Jacó boat tours guide compares private charters from Herradura and Los Sueños. The Sealounge catamaran trips to Playa Fantasia normally run in July, but when we checked in October 2026 no 2027 dates were yet open to book.

What to Watch in July: Holiday Rates, Rain and Swell

July is one of the better wet-season months, but it still needs some planning.

Early-July Prices and Crowds

The first two weeks are the most expensive of the green season in our sample, and the beach, surf schools and family tours are at their busiest. If your dates are flexible, the last ten days of the month are noticeably cheaper.

Rain Is Still the Norm

The midsummer dip is a tendency, not a guarantee, and it is weaker this far south than in Guanacaste, and in some years it is weak everywhere. Plan outdoor activities for the morning and keep afternoons flexible.

Seasickness and Cloudy Water

Even on smooth days, a 45-minute crossing can unsettle some passengers; one July 2026 guest noted that the ride made at least one passenger ill. Take a remedy before you board if you are prone to it. Snorkeling visibility varies after rain.

Rip Currents

Green-season swell strengthens Jacó's rip currents, and school-holiday beaches near San José see the most emergencies. Swim near the municipal lifeguard towers, follow their flags, avoid darker, foamy channels flowing out to sea, and if you are caught, swim parallel to the shore and raise an arm. The emergency number is 911.

Where to Stay on a July Trip to Jacó

Book early July well ahead: Costa Rica's mid-year school break fills Jacó, and Saturdays in early July were the most expensive nights of the month in our sample, easing toward the end of July.

Most visitors stay in the center, near Avenida Pastor Díaz, within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and tour pickups. The south end of Jacó Beach is quieter, and Los Sueños on Playa Herradura, about 10 minutes north, is the resort-and-marina choice and the departure point for the Tortuga Island catamarans.

Best in July

The Tortuga Island trip leads the month for its calm crossings and the first chance of whales. We'd give Carara National Park the edge for a nature morning: the forest is green and quiet at 08:00, and the Tárcoles crocodile boat next door makes it a full wildlife half-day.

For School-Holiday Families

The zipline takes children from age four, and two-hour surf lessons suit kids in the morning white water. We'd book both ahead in early July, when families fill the slots. The food walk is from age 10.

More July Activities Worth Knowing About

These July-friendly experiences do not have their own guides on this site yet.

Playa Hermosa

Five minutes south of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is a powerful beach break for experienced surfers only. From July its beach is also a turtle-nesting refuge, so stick to marked areas at night and follow the refuge's rules.

Herradura Bay

The bay beside the Los Sueños marina, about 20 minutes north, is more sheltered than open Jacó Beach and a better place for young children to swim during green-season swell.

Guanacaste Day

On 25 July, Costa Rica celebrates the 1824 annexation of the Nicoya district, today's Guanacaste, with a national holiday. The biggest parades and traditional music are in Guanacaste itself, but expect a busier holiday weekend at the beach.

Late Sunsets

Sunset near 18:02 is among the latest of the year, which gives July a little more evening light for a beach walk after the afternoon rain has cleared.

Our Take

Aim for the last ten days of July: in our sample the school-holiday rates are gone by then, while the seas are still calm, the midsummer dip in the rain is most likely, and the whale season is just getting going.

Tips for a July Trip to Jacó

  • Shift your dates later if you can: in our sample, early-July Saturdays cost about $215 against about $162 on Wednesday 28 July.
  • Book family tours ahead for the school break: Tortuga Island, ziplines and surf lessons fill first in early July.
  • Watch for whales on the crossing: July is the start of the southern humpback season; bring binoculars.
  • Respect the nesting beach: at Playa Hermosa, use only red or amber light at night and keep at least 10 metres from turtles.
  • Take a seasickness remedy if you need one: July crossings are usually smooth, but 45 minutes on the water can still unsettle some passengers.
  • Swim near a lifeguard tower: green-season swell and holiday crowds make Jacó's rip currents more dangerous.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Jacó in June guide covers the quiet green-season weeks and Carara at its greenest, and our Jacó in August guide covers the build-up of the whale season, turtle nesting and steady post-holiday prices.
  • Not sure what to book? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences year-round and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge. Travelling with kids? Our best things to do in Jacó for families guide adds minimum ages and prices for a family of four.

How We Put This Guide Together

Jacó has no long-running official weather station of its own, so the weather figures are World Meteorological Organization normals for the two nearest stations, Quepos (1984 to 2003) and Puntarenas, with Jacó placed between them; the canícula and veranillo dates come from Costa Rica's National Meteorological Institute (IMN), sea temperature is a long-term average from published sea-temperature records, and sunrise and sunset are calculated for Jacó's coordinates. These are normals, not a forecast for July 2027. Hotel prices are the median nightly rate for a room for two at 3 to 4 star Jacó hotels that returned a price for each July 2027 date when we checked on 20 October 2026; only 15 to 17 hotels quoted, so treat them as a pattern. Tour prices, schedules, cancellation terms and July availability were checked live on 20 October 2026. The sea-condition and whale counts come from reading every review of Costa Cat's Tortuga Island trip and sorting them by the month they were posted. Turtle-nesting dates and visitor rules for the Playa Hermosa refuge, and the school-break dates, come from Costa Rican news reporting. Ratings in the tables are our editorial judgment of how July suits each activity, not guest scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jacó good in July?+

It is one of the better green-season months. July brings a midsummer dip in the rain, especially in the second half, calm crossings to Tortuga Island and the first humpback whales and nesting turtles of the season. Early July is the green season's price peak because of Costa Rica's school holidays; by late July, rates in our sample were back to about $162 on weeknights.

What is the weather like in Jacó in July?+

Warm, humid and often wet, with drier spells. Expect highs around 31°C (88°F), nights near 23°C and roughly 18 to 26 days with some rain: Puntarenas, to the north, records 18 rain days in July and Quepos, to the south, 25.7. The IMN dates the canícula, a midsummer dip in the rain, to about 15 July to 10 August.

Can you see whales near Jacó in July?+

Sometimes. July is the start of the southern humpback season on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, and 5 of 168 Costa Cat Tortuga Island reviews posted in July mention whales, including a mother and calf. Sightings rise sharply in August and September.

Does it rain a lot in Jacó in July?+

Yes, but often less than in June or August. Quepos averages 445 mm over about 26 rain days in July and Puntarenas 176 mm over 18 days; Jacó sits between them, at the southern edge of the midsummer dry spell. Mornings are usually the driest part of the day.

Is July expensive in Jacó?+

Early July is. In our sample of Jacó hotels for July 2027, Saturdays 3 and 10 July cost about $215 and Wednesday 7 July about $198, during the likely school-holiday window. By Wednesday 28 July, the weeknight rate was back to about $162.

What is the best week to visit Jacó in July?+

The last ten days, about 19 to 31 July, ideally midweek. School-holiday rates have eased in our sample, and that part of the month falls inside the IMN's usual window for the midsummer dip in the rain.

What are the best things to do in Jacó in July?+

The Tortuga Island catamaran, for calm crossings and the first whales; a guided morning in Carara National Park; the Tárcoles River crocodile boat; and the ocean-view zipline. Surf lessons suit kids in the morning, and turtle nesting begins at nearby Playa Hermosa.

When are the Costa Rican school holidays in July 2027?+

The 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026. In 2026, the mid-year break ran from 6 to 17 July, and hotel rates in our 2027 sample are highest in roughly the same window. Guanacaste Day, 25 July, is a separate public holiday and falls on a Sunday in 2027.
