Shana by the Beach sits on the jungle hillside of Punta Quepos, with steps down to Biesanz Beach, a main pool and an adults-only pool, and monkeys at breakfast. Guests score it 8.8 out of 10 across more than 3,000 reviews. Breakfast is included, rooms are big, and the view depends on the room you book. The hill is steep, and some rooms are dated. Check live room prices for your dates below.
Why Guests Choose It
- A path to the beach. Steps lead down through the jungle to Biesanz Beach, a small cove guests praise for its calm water.
- Breakfast is included on every rate we priced, and the buffet with eggs made to order is one of the most praised things in the reviews.
- Wildlife all day: capuchin monkeys at breakfast and on the balconies, plus toucans, macaws and sloths around the grounds.
- Two pools, one of them adults only, and rooms with their own private pool for a bigger splurge.
- Big rooms for the price, with free parking and children welcome.
Best for
- Families who want a pool, a beach on foot and breakfast covered
- Couples who book an ocean-view or private-pool room
- Wildlife lovers who want monkeys without leaving the hotel
Think twice if
- Steep hills and stairs are hard for you: there is no elevator, and the walk back from the beach is a climb
- You will settle for the cheapest room: low-level rooms can have little or no view
- You want modern design: several guests found the rooms dated

Guest Reviews
Excellent
3,006 guest reviews
Guests often praise
- Excellent location and private beach access
- Friendly, attentive staff (reception, pool, breakfast)
- Beautiful pools and ocean views
- Abundant wildlife sightings on property
- Clean and well-maintained grounds
- Spacious rooms and good breakfast
- Pet-friendly option
Some guests mention
- Limited or difficult parking for larger cars
- Occasional power outage reported
- In-room interruptions / housekeeping timing issues
- Uncomfortable pillows or beds for some guests
- Some lack of breakfast variety and mixed restaurant experiences
- Bar/cocktails could be improved
Multiple guests describe the resort as very clean and immaculately kept; rooms and common areas praised for cleanliness.
Staff repeatedly described as friendly, attentive and welcoming (reception, pool bar, breakfast staff), with isolated incidents of early/poor communication from some staff members.
Excellent location with private beach access, close to the national park and spectacular ocean views; many guests highlighted beach proximity and scenery.
Rooms are spacious and comfortable for many guests, but some mentioned uncomfortable beds/pillows and disturbances from in-room work or housekeeping.
Strong amenities: impressive pools, pool bar service, beach access, and pet-friendly options; some guests noted the hilly site (cart available) and limited/tight parking.
Generally good experience but a few guests felt the price could be improved or that value was mixed given occasional service/parking issues.
Breakfast buffet and many dishes received praise and the restaurant offers a good wine selection; some noted limited breakfast variety, an underwhelming sirloin, and bar cocktails could improve.
Overall very positive stays reported — beautiful property, wildlife sightings, attentive staff and memorable views — with a few negatives that did not dominate guests' impressions.

“Great would stay again!”
The breakfast offered was great and had so many options and the views were amazing. Javier, Lusandro, Edgar, Andrei, Lester, and Kevin were such a great help throughout our entire stay. The room was large and spacious and had all the needed essentials. The private beach had a beautiful walk and was amazing to have available.
Nothing comes to mind.

Do not book blind on the cheapest room. Several guests in the lowest-level rooms had little or no view and regretted it, and one warned against the ground floor of blocks 1 and 2. If the view matters, book a room with "Ocean View" in the name.
Watch the refundable premium. For three nights in mid-November 2026, a Standard Room started at $749 with breakfast (about $250 a night), but the refundable version cost about 40% more. In January 2027 the gap was smaller, about 23%.
The private-pool rooms are the splurge. In our May 2027 sample, the Jungle Room and the Royal Jungle View with private pool both started at $1,804 for three nights, about $600 a night.
What Guests Say About Shana
Across 3,006 reviews, Shana scores 8.8 out of 10. The review analysis rates location (9.4), cleanliness (9.2) and overall experience (9.2) highest; value for money is its lowest category at 8.0, with food (8.4) and room quality (8.2) close behind. We read the 75 most recent English-language reviews, from November 2025 to September 2026.
The location and the beach come first. Guests love walking down the jungle path to Biesanz Beach, where the water is calm enough to swim, and the ocean views from the pools and balconies.
Then the wildlife, staff and breakfast. Monkeys raid breakfast and visit balconies, toucans and macaws fly over the adults-only pool, and reviews name the staff, from reception to the golf-cart drivers. The breakfast buffet is a highlight, though a few guests wanted more variety.
The complaints are consistent. The hill is steep with no elevator. Several rooms are dated, and some low-level rooms are dark with no view. Over the 2025–26 winter, several guests were put next to renovation work and heard drilling. Parking is tight, and restaurant prices are high.
What You Should Know
- Ask whether any renovation work is going on near your room. Several guests between December 2025 and February 2026 were placed next to construction.
- The golf carts are your friend: staff drive guests between the rooms, the pool and reception, which saves the steepest climbs.
- If you have a car, expect tight parking and gravel stretches on the access road. One guest recommends a car for going out to dinner after dark.
- Happy hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m., one guest noted, when drinks are a good price.
Getting to Shana
Shana sits in the hills of Punta Quepos (Quepos Point), about 800 meters northwest of Plaza Vista. A path and steps lead down from the property to Biesanz Beach. Parking is free but tight.
Most international visitors fly into San José (SJO) and continue by road; see our San José to Manuel Antonio guide for shuttles and driving. The hotel lists airport transfers and a local shuttle, both at an extra charge.
From here it is a short drive to the main beach and to a guided tour of the national park. Biesanz's calm water also suits a day of snorkeling; see our Manuel Antonio snorkeling guide for boat trips to the reefs.
