Jacó and Manuel Antonio sit 74 km apart on the same Pacific road, but they are very different bases: a lively surf town two hours from San José versus a quieter rainforest coast built around Costa Rica's best-known national park. Here is how they compare, and how to see both.

What You Should Know

  • Jacó and Manuel Antonio are on the same coastal highway, Route 34. By road it is about 67 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from Jacó to Quepos, and about 74 km and 1.5 hours to the national park end of Manuel Antonio.
  • Jacó is the closer of the two to San José, about 2 hours from the airport against roughly 3.5 hours for Manuel Antonio. That makes Jacó the busier weekend and holiday beach for Costa Ricans.
  • Manuel Antonio's draw is its national park: sloths, monkeys and a calm swimming beach at the end of short trails. The park is closed on Tuesdays and tickets are sold online only. Jacó has no park in town, but Carara National Park and the Tárcoles crocodiles are 20 to 30 minutes north.
  • Jacó is the louder, cheaper and more surf-focused base, with the liveliest nightlife on this coast. Manuel Antonio is quieter and greener, and its best-rated hotels cost more. In our hotel guides, the bookable top picks start at $66 a night in Jacó and $138 in Manuel Antonio.

Jacó vs Manuel Antonio: The Short Answer

⭐ The short answer: Choose Manuel Antonio if wildlife and a calm swimming beach matter most: its national park puts sloths and monkeys on short trails that end on the sand, and it is quieter at night. Choose Jacó if you want surf, nightlife, lower hotel prices and a shorter drive from San José, with Carara's macaws and the Tárcoles crocodiles 30 minutes away. With only a few days, Jacó is the easier base, and Manuel Antonio works as a day trip from it.

So is Jacó or Manuel Antonio better? Neither wins outright, because they are built for different trips. Jacó is a busy surf town with a long beach, bars on the main street and hills behind it for ATV rides, ziplines and waterfalls. Manuel Antonio is a ridge road of hillside hotels running from Quepos down to the park gate, where the rainforest meets the beach. Our guides to the best things to do in Jacó and things to do in Manuel Antonio cover each base in full. This page puts them side by side.

Our take: The question is less "Jacó or Manuel Antonio" than "where do I sleep". The park is a morning's visit, and Jacó's best wildlife is a 30-minute drive north, so many travelers base themselves for price and atmosphere and visit the other one for a day.

Choose Jacó If, Choose Manuel Antonio If

If the table did not settle it, these are the travelers each base suits best.

Choose Jacó if

You want surf, nightlife and a short transfer

Jacó is about 2 hours from San José airport, has beginner waves right in town and stronger surf at Playa Hermosa, and its main street has bars and clubs most nights. It suits a first or last stop, a short trip or a group that wants to go out.

Choose Manuel Antonio if

Wildlife is the reason for the trip

The national park is the easiest place in the country to see sloths and three kinds of monkey on one short walk, with a guide and a spotting scope. Stay nearby and you can be at the gate when it opens, before the day-trip vans arrive.

Choose Jacó if

You are watching the budget

The best-rated hotels we can book in Jacó start at $66 a night for two, against $138 in Manuel Antonio, and Jacó's tours start at $40 for the Tárcoles crocodile boat. Small three-star hotels and apartment hotels make up most of its top list.

Choose Manuel Antonio if

You want to swim in calm water

Playa Manuel Antonio, inside the park, is the calmest swimming beach in the area. Jacó's town beach is a surf beach with rip currents in every season, and the calmer coves are a drive away.

Choose Jacó if

You want lots of different day trips

From Jacó you can walk Carara for scarlet macaws, see crocodiles on the Tárcoles, sail to Tortuga Island from Los Sueños, ride an ATV to a waterfall and still do Manuel Antonio as a long day trip.

Choose Manuel Antonio if

You want quiet evenings and a view

Most hotels sit on a forested ridge with ocean views, monkeys in the gardens and little traffic after dark. It suits couples and families who want early nights rather than a bar strip.

Can't decide? Sleep in Jacó for price and variety and spend one day in Manuel Antonio, or split the trip: they are only 1.5 hours apart on the same road.

Day Trip to Manuel Antonio from Jacó: Compare and Book

  • On a tour. Tucanes Tours collects you in Jacó at 06:30, stops for breakfast at its base near Quepos, walks the park with a guide and a scope, leaves about 45 minutes for the beach inside the park and brings you back after lunch. • On your own. Leave Jacó by about 06:00 to reach the gate soon after it opens, buy your park ticket online in advance, and book a guided walk such as Costa Rica Jade Tours' $49 nature walk (ticket extra) or Edwin's Manuel Antonio Nature Tours, which also sells options with the ticket included. Parking near the gate is private: Edwin's lists $10 per car.

How Far Is Jacó from Manuel Antonio?

Jacó is about 67 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from Quepos, and about 74 km and 1.5 hours from the national park at the far end of Manuel Antonio, driving south on Route 34, the Costanera Sur, through Parrita. Those are our route times without traffic; trucks on the two-lane highway and the slow last stretch up the ridge road from Quepos can add 15 to 30 minutes. Day-trip guests who are picked up last often describe the ride as closer to 2 hours.

The two are on the same road from San José. Coming from the airport, you pass Jacó after about 2 hours and reach Manuel Antonio after about 3.5. That makes them easy to combine: a common plan is two or three nights in Manuel Antonio, then two or three in Jacó, so the drive to the airport on your last day is only about 2 hours. A shared shuttle or a private transfer covers the hop between them if you are not driving.

Beaches, Swimming and Surf

This is where the two bases differ most, and it often decides the trip.

Swimming

Manuel Antonio wins for swimming. Playa Manuel Antonio, inside the park, is a sheltered cove with forest on both sides and the calmest water in the area. You need a park ticket to use it, and the park closes on Tuesdays. Playa Espadilla, the long public beach outside the gate, is free and busier, with surf schools and chair rentals.

Jacó's town beach is a surf beach first. The waves break close to shore, rip currents form in every season, and lifeguards cover only part of the beach and not every day. Swim where others are swimming, stay out after drinking or after dark, and keep children to wading depth. Families who want calmer water usually drive about 20 minutes north to Playa Mantas, a sheltered cove, or take a boat to the white sand of Tortuga Island; our Tortuga Island tour from Jacó guide compares the trips.

Surf

Jacó is the better surf base. Jacó Beach has consistent beginner waves right in town, with lessons from $49, and Playa Hermosa, about 10 minutes south, is a stronger beach break for experienced surfers. Manuel Antonio is a good place to learn too: lessons run on Playa Espadilla, where offshore islands keep the waves manageable. If surfing is more than a one-lesson experiment, Jacó gives you more breaks to progress on.

Most Popular Tours

Wildlife: The Park vs Carara and Tárcoles

Manuel Antonio is the easier place to see wildlife. The national park is small and well protected, and its main trail is flat and largely paved. With a guide and a spotting scope, a two-hour walk usually finds both species of sloth, white-faced capuchins, squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys, plus iguanas, coatis and birds. Guides share sightings with each other on the trail, which is a big reason the walk produces so much. Entry is about $18 per adult with tax, bought online in advance; the park is closed on Tuesdays and sells out days ahead in busy weeks.

Jacó's wildlife is 20 to 30 minutes north. Carara National Park sits where dry forest meets rainforest and is known for scarlet macaws; entry is $10 plus tax for adults, also online only, and it opens at 07:00 in the dry season and 08:00 in the green season. Next to it, the Tárcoles River has a dense population of American crocodiles, which you can watch free from the highway bridge or up close by boat; our Tárcoles River crocodile tour guide explains which boats avoid feeding them.

The practical difference: in Manuel Antonio the wildlife is at the end of your street, while from Jacó you drive to it. From Manuel Antonio, Carara is about 1 hour 50 minutes away, so if you want both parks, Jacó is the better base for it.

Nightlife, Crowds and the Feel of Each Town

Jacó is a town; Manuel Antonio is a road. Jacó has a walkable centre one block back from the beach, with sodas, supermarkets, surf shops and the busiest nightlife on the central Pacific. Bars and clubs cluster on and around Avenida Pastor Díaz, evenings often start with sunset drinks on the beach, and Friday and Saturday are the big nights. Keep it practical: carry little cash, leave passports in the hotel safe and take a taxi back rather than walking the beach after dark, as Canada's travel advice names Jacó among the Pacific coast areas where thefts are reported.

Manuel Antonio's hotels and restaurants are spread along the 7 km road between Quepos and the park, much of it on a steep, forested ridge. Evenings are quieter: dinner with a view, a sunset drink, an early night before the park. Most people use taxis or the local bus to get around.

Crowds come at different times. Jacó is the nearest big beach town to San José, so it fills with Costa Rican visitors on weekends, school holidays and especially Semana Santa (21 to 28 March in 2027). Manuel Antonio's crowds are concentrated in the park: it caps daily entry, and in the December to April high season tickets can sell out a week or more ahead (one park operator warns of tickets selling out 8 days in advance). Recent guests advise going early, before the heat and the crowds build.

Where to Stay and What It Costs

Jacó is the cheaper base, but the gap depends on the kind of hotel you want.

In Jacó, most of the best-scoring hotels are small three-star hotels and apartment hotels with a pool, in town or at Playa Hermosa and Los Sueños. In our best hotels in Jacó guide the top-rated hotels we can book ran from $66 to $266 a night for two at their cheapest, from Hotel Mar de Luz with breakfast to the Los Sueños Marriott, the area's one five-star resort. Our month-by-month Jacó guides sampled a median of about $160 a night for three-star-plus hotels on regular January 2027 nights, and about $129 to $147 for the last nights of October 2026.

In Manuel Antonio, you are paying for the setting: boutique and rainforest hotels on the ridge with ocean views, monkeys in the gardens and steep stairs or golf carts. In our Manuel Antonio hotels guide the eight best-rated hotels we can book ran from $138 to $327 a night for two, and the four we cannot book, including the beachfront Arenas del Mar, publish rates from $280 to $547. Our monthly Manuel Antonio guides put mid-range rooms at about $190 a night in January and about $120 in September and October.

Tours cost about the same in both places, with one exception: the Manuel Antonio park walk is cheap ($49 plus a ticket of about $18), while Jacó's headline tours (ATV, Tortuga Island) run $105 to $173.85. A wildlife-focused couple can spend less in Manuel Antonio once they are there; an active group will spend more in Jacó on tours and less on the room.

Most Popular Tours

Weather and the Rainy Season

Both follow the same pattern: a dry season from December to April, with February the driest month, and a green season from May to November, with September and October the wettest. Mornings are usually clear in the green season, with storms in the afternoon.

The difference is in the totals. There is no official weather station in Jacó, so our Jacó guides compare the nearest long-term records: Quepos, next to Manuel Antonio, averages about 3,570 mm of rain a year, while Puntarenas, up the coast to the north, averages about 1,600 mm. Jacó sits between them and is usually a little drier than Manuel Antonio, though both are very wet in September and October.

In the wettest months a beach day is the first thing rain spoils, which costs Manuel Antonio more than Jacó, where the ATV, waterfall and crocodile tours run in the rain (Carara's lagoon trail can flood, though). In the dry season both are at their best, and Manuel Antonio's park tickets are hardest to get. Our Jacó guide has a season table and links to every month.

Tips for Choosing and Combining Them

  • Plan around Tuesdays. Manuel Antonio National Park is closed every Tuesday, and the day trip from Jacó does not run that day. Use Tuesday for Carara, Tárcoles or the mangroves.
  • Buy park tickets before you go. Both Manuel Antonio and Carara sell tickets online only. In the dry season, book Manuel Antonio as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Go early. Wildlife is most active after dawn, the park is calmest at opening, and green-season rain usually arrives in the afternoon.
  • Do not judge Jacó by its beach alone. Its best experiences are the boat to Tortuga Island, Carara and the hills behind town, not the town beach.
  • Split the trip if you have five nights or more. Jacó first for surf and day trips, then Manuel Antonio for the park and a quieter finish, or the other way round if your flight leaves early.
  • Wear swimwear on park day. Guided walks finish at a beach inside the park, with little shade, so travel in your swimsuit, bring sunscreen and carry as little as you can.

How We Compared Them

The Costa Rica Day Trip team built this comparison from our existing Jacó and Manuel Antonio guides, which use the same live tour data, our hotel price samples and long-term rainfall records from the Quepos and Puntarenas stations. Drive times are our own route calculations between central Jacó, Quepos, the Manuel Antonio park area and San José airport, without traffic. Tours were checked live on 27 October 2026. Every tour shown has a rating of 4.5 or more, at least 100 reviews and a guest review in the past six months, and we read the recent reviews of the Manuel Antonio day trip from Jacó for pickup times, meals and beach time. Park details (Tuesday closure, online-only tickets and the approximate fee) come from the park's tour operators and recent visitor guides; confirm them with SINAC before you go, because fees and hours can change.
