June is the heart of Jacó's early green season: bright mornings, afternoon rain, lush forest and the quietest beaches of the year before July's school holidays. Hotel rates held steady in our sample until the last days of the month. Here is how to plan a June trip and what to book.

What You Should Know

  • June is firmly green season. Quepos, the nearest long-term station to the south, averages about 413 mm over 24 rain days, and Puntarenas to the north about 21 days, so expect rain most days, typically after a brighter morning.
  • It is one of the quietest months in Jacó. There are no public holidays in June, and Costa Rica's mid-year school break fell in July in 2026, so June beaches and tours are calm and green-season groups are small.
  • Prices are steady until the very end. In our hotel sample, June weeknights were about $162 and Saturdays about $185 every week; from 30 June rates began to rise, reaching about $198 on Saturday 3 July.
  • The forest is the reason to come. Carara National Park, 30 minutes north, opens at 08:00 from May to November, and a June 2026 couple who booked on a whim in the rainy season were the only guests on their walk and saw dozens of species.

June in Jacó: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best June window: 1 to 26 June, midweek mornings. In our hotel sample, rates are flat for most of the month and only start to climb on 30 June ahead of July's holidays. Within each day, mornings are usually the driest hours.

Planning Jacó for June 2027? June sits between the start of the rains in May and Costa Rica's July school holidays, which makes it one of the calmest months of the year in Jacó. The weather figures here are long-term normals from the nearest official stations, not a forecast; the prices and schedules are what we found for June 2027.

A June trip to Jacó is a green-season trip. Most days bring rain, but the usual pattern is a usable morning followed by cloud and showers or storms later in the day. In return, the forest is at its lushest, the beaches are close to empty on weekdays, and tours often run with only a handful of people. In our view, June is the month to come for the rainforest and wildlife rather than for a sun-and-sand holiday.

We think the tradeoff is fair for travelers who plan their days around the morning. You give up reliable afternoons and, in our sample, you do not yet save on hotels. You gain space, green scenery and some of the most rewarding wildlife walks of the year.

Who June suits best:

  • Wildlife and nature fans: Carara and the Tárcoles River are quiet, green and full of life.
  • Crowd-averse travelers: no holidays, no school break and small tour groups.
  • Improving surfers: green-season swell is bigger than in the dry months.
  • Sun-seekers: less ideal. December to April is the reliable beach window.

Temperature and Humidity

Highs run around 31°C (88°F) and nights stay at 23 to 24°C (73 to 75°F). Quepos to the south averages 30.8°C and 23.1°C in June, and Puntarenas, across the Gulf of Nicoya, 32.2°C and 23.6°C. The air is humid, so the heat feels heavier than the number suggests. These are the longest days of the year: sunrise near 05:18 and sunset moving from 17:55 to 18:02.

Rain Pattern

Quepos averages 413 mm over 23.6 rain days in June, and Puntarenas 217 mm over 21 days, so expect roughly 21 to 24 days with some rain around Jacó. Rain usually builds through the afternoon and evening rather than falling all day; Puntarenas still averages a little over five hours of sunshine a day in June. Heavy overnight rain is common too, and it can leave trails muddy and rivers high the next morning.

Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The sea stays near 29°C (84°F). Green-season swells are larger than in the dry months, which suits intermediate surfers; beginners do best in the early morning. Trails in the hills and at Carara are muddy and humid, and mosquitoes are more active after rain, so bring repellent. Carara's lagoon trail beside the Tárcoles River can close in the wettest months because of flooding.

June in Jacó: Crowds and Prices Week by Week

June has no public holidays and no school break, so it is one of the most even months of the year.

  • 1 to 13 June: quiet green season. In our sample, weeknights were about $162 and Saturdays about $185.
  • 14 to 26 June: unchanged, at about $162 on weeknights and $185 to $186 on Saturdays. Tour groups stay small; the Tortuga Island catamaran showed only 21 June as unavailable when we checked.
  • 27 to 30 June: the run-up to July. Wednesday 30 June rose to about $182 in our sample, and Saturday 3 July to about $198, as Costa Rica's mid-year school break and the northern summer holidays approach. In 2026 the school break ran from 6 to 17 July; the 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 2026.

What typically happens in June is that tours run with whoever turns up. Tour prices are the same as in the dry season, every tour we cover had open dates through the month, and guests in the green season often describe small or even private groups.

Green-Season Wildlife: Carara and the Forest at Its Greenest

June's signature draw near Jacó is the rainforest. After a month of rain, the forest along the coast is at its lushest, and the parks and rivers north of town are quiet.

Carara National Park in the Rain

Carara National Park, about 30 minutes north of Jacó, sits where the dry forests of the north meet the rainforests of the south and is famous for scarlet macaws. From May to November it opens at 08:00. Green-season reviews are encouraging: a June 2026 couple booked a guided walk last-minute "during the rainy season, on a whim", were the only guests and saw coatis, poison dart frogs, ghost bats, trogons, toucans and two kinds of monkey, and their guide found macaws after the walk. A July group who went after a night of heavy rain still saw plenty. Our Carara National Park tour guide compares six guided walks.

Macaws Are Still Possible

Carara's macaws are never guaranteed on the trail, but the green season does not seem to hurt your chances: 4 of the 11 reviews of our pick posted in June mention macaws, about the same share as in January. Guides often drive on to known macaw spots outside the park after the walk; tell yours at the start if macaws matter most.

The Tárcoles River

The Tárcoles River crocodile boats, just north of Carara, run four times a day year-round. Book the 08:30 boat and combine it with a Carara morning for the best wildlife half-day near Jacó.

Whales and Turtles: Not Yet

June is between seasons for both. None of the Costa Cat Tortuga Island reviews posted in June mention whales; southern humpbacks appear in July reviews and peak in September. Olive ridley turtles nest at the Playa Hermosa wildlife refuge, just south of Jacó, from July to December.

What to Watch in June: Rain, Mud, Mosquitoes and Swell

The rain shapes every June day in Jacó. Plan around it and it rarely costs you a tour.

Rain Can Cut a Walk Short

Most tours run in light rain, but heavy storms change plans. A past July group on a Carara walk had to cut it short when the rain came and the trail turned muddy, and a June guest on the same tour skipped the after-walk macaw stop because it was raining. Book the first start of the day, and keep one flexible day for anything you would hate to miss.

Mud and Mosquitoes

Trails are muddy and humid in June. Wear shoes with grip, bring a light rain jacket and insect repellent, and expect the ATV ride to send you home covered in mud: the operator runs in all weather and warns riders to expect it.

Bigger Swell and Rip Currents

Green-season swells strengthen Jacó's rip currents. Swim near the municipal lifeguard towers, follow their flags, avoid darker, foamy channels flowing out to sea, and if you are caught, swim parallel to the shore and raise an arm. The emergency number is 911.

Playa Fantasia

The Sealounge catamaran trips to Playa Fantasia have run year-round in recent seasons, judging by guest reviews, but when we checked in October 2026 no 2027 dates were yet open to book. Confirm before you plan around them; the Tortuga Island trip runs daily.

Where to Stay on a June Trip to Jacó

June rates in our sample matched May's, then rose into early July as Costa Rica's mid-year school break approached.

Most visitors stay in the center, near Avenida Pastor Díaz, within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and tour pickups. The south end of Jacó Beach is quieter, and Los Sueños on Playa Herradura, about 10 minutes north, is the resort-and-marina choice and the departure point for the Tortuga Island catamarans.

G&R Adventures: Guided Visit to Carara National Park

$45 · 4.9 ⭐ (256 reviews)

The outing we'd book first in June. The green season puts Carara's forest at its lushest and its trails at their quietest, and this is the best-reviewed walk in the park, with the entrance ticket included. A certified guide with a spotting scope finds the frogs, bats, monkeys and birds you would walk past, and guides often drive on to a macaw spot afterwards. It runs daily at 08:00, 09:00 and 11:00; take the 08:00 start to beat the afternoon rain.

Best in June

We'd give Carara National Park the edge this month: the forest is at its greenest, the trails are quiet, and the walk is done by late morning. Pair it with the Tárcoles crocodile boat on the same stretch of road for a full wildlife morning. The zipline is the easiest adventure to fit around the weather, with seven start times a day.

When It Rains

The food walk runs in light rain, and on one rainy June day the guide handed out umbrellas and carried on. The ATV ride runs in all weather if you are happy to get muddy. We'd only book the waterfall hike in June if you are fit and sure-footed, because the climbs and ropes are harder on wet rock.

More June Activities Worth Knowing About

These June-friendly experiences do not have their own guides on this site yet.

Playa Hermosa

Five minutes south of Jacó, Playa Hermosa is a powerful beach break for experienced surfers only, and green-season swell makes it more serious still. Its beach is part of a national wildlife refuge where olive ridley turtles begin nesting in July.

Herradura Bay

The bay beside the Los Sueños marina, about 20 minutes north, is more sheltered than open Jacó Beach, which matters once green-season swell picks up.

Storm Watching

June afternoons often bring dramatic skies over the Pacific. A covered terrace or beachfront restaurant with a view of the incoming storm is one of the best free shows in town.

The Longest Days

Sunrise near 05:18 gives June the longest mornings of the year, which is exactly when the weather is usually best. Early risers can fit a beach walk or a surf session in before most tours start.

Our Take

June rewards the earliest risers more than any other month: with sunrise near 05:18 and rain usually arriving after lunch, travelers who are on the trail at Carara by 08:00 tend to describe their best wildlife day of the trip, while those who start at midday often meet the rain instead.

Tips for a June Trip to Jacó

  • Book the first start of every tour: mornings are usually the driest part of a June day.
  • Buy the Carara ticket online or book a tour that includes it: guests report they could not buy entry at the gate; our June pick includes the ticket.
  • Pack repellent, a rain jacket and grippy shoes: mosquitoes are more active after rain, and trails are muddy.
  • Come before the end of the month: in our sample, hotel rates started climbing on 30 June ahead of July's holidays.
  • Swim near a lifeguard tower: bigger green-season swell strengthens Jacó's rip currents.
  • Keep one flexible day: heavy rain can postpone a boat trip or a hike; all the tours we recommend offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Jacó in May guide covers the start of the green season, and our Jacó in July guide covers the school holidays, the midsummer dip in the rain and the first humpback whales.
  • Not sure what to book? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences year-round and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge.
  • Where to stay. Our best hotels in Jacó guide ranks 12 hotels by guest score, from $66 a night in our sample.

How We Put This Guide Together

Jacó has no long-running official weather station of its own, so the weather figures are World Meteorological Organization normals for the two nearest stations, Quepos (1984 to 2003) and Puntarenas, with Jacó placed between them; sea temperature is a long-term average from published sea-temperature records, and sunrise and sunset are calculated for Jacó's coordinates. These are normals, not a forecast for June 2027. Hotel prices are the median nightly rate for a room for two at 3 to 4 star Jacó hotels that returned a price for each June 2027 date when we checked on 20 October 2026; the figures repeated week after week, so treat them as provisional. Tour prices, schedules, cancellation terms and June availability were checked live on 20 October 2026. The wildlife, rain and whale notes come from reading every review of the featured Carara walk and Costa Cat's Tortuga Island trip and sorting them by the month they were posted. Carara opening hours and trail notes come from our Carara National Park tour guide, which cites SINAC; turtle-nesting dates for the Playa Hermosa refuge and school-break dates come from Costa Rican news reporting. Ratings in the tables are our editorial judgment of how June suits each activity, not guest scores.
