Where to Stay in San José: Downtown vs Escazú vs La Sabana
San José is not a city of many hotel districts. Three areas hold almost everything worth booking, and they are genuinely different stays. Our read: pick the area first and the hotel second, because the area decides how your evening goes and the hotel mostly decides how your bed feels.
Downtown and Plaza de la Cultura
The historic core, and the part of the city that most rewards walking: the Gold Museum, the Jade Museum, the National Theatre and the Central Market all sit within a few blocks of each other, and the Avenida Central is pedestrianised through the middle of it. Hotel Presidente and the Gran Hotel Costa Rica are here, a block apart. This is the right choice for a first visit, for anyone without a car, and for anyone who wants to actually see the city rather than sleep near it. The trade is noise and a downtown that empties out after dark, so plan dinner rather than wandering for it.
Escazú and Santa Ana
The western suburbs, 20 to 30 minutes out depending on traffic, and where a lot of the city's money has moved. The Multiplaza mall, the international restaurants and the quieter residential streets are here, along with the Residence Inn, the Courtyard, Villas del Río and the InterContinental. Best if you have a rental car, if you are staying several nights, or if you want a kitchen and a supermarket rather than a hotel restaurant. The trade is character and travel time: Escazú is more suburban and commercial than the historic downtown core, better suited to travellers prioritising space, shopping and driving convenience, and a taxi downtown and back will cost you an hour of your evening.
La Sabana
The middle ground, built around the large park of the same name on the western edge of downtown. The Hilton, the Holiday Inn and Irazú Hotel & Studios all sit here, a short drive from the centre and positioned on the road west, which matters if you are driving to La Fortuna or the Pacific coast the next morning. This is the practical compromise: greener and calmer than downtown, closer and cheaper to reach than Escazú.

Is San José worth staying in, or should I go straight to the coast?+
Most visitors stay one or two nights, usually on arrival or before a flight home, and that is a sensible plan. The drive from the airport to La Fortuna is about three hours and to Manuel Antonio about three and a half, so arriving on an afternoon flight and pushing on the same day often means driving in the dark on unfamiliar roads. One night in San José removes that. If you do have a full day, the Gold Museum, the Jade Museum and the National Theatre are genuinely worth it.
Which San José hotels have a pool?+
Pools are the exception in San José rather than the rule, because the city sits at around 1,170 metres and the evenings are cool. If a pool matters for children, those are the three to look at.
Do I need a car to stay in San José?+
Not if you stay downtown. Hotel Presidente and the Gran Hotel Costa Rica are both within walking distance of the main sights, and taxis and Uber are cheap and widely available. You do want a car, or you should plan on taxi costs, if you stay in Escazú, where the hotels sit in suburbs designed around driving. If you are picking up a rental car for the rest of the trip anyway, Escazú and La Sabana are easier to get in and out of than the downtown grid.

None of these, strictly speaking. The drive from the city to Juan Santamaría airport takes 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, which is manageable for a midday flight and a real risk for a 6am one.
