Where to Stay in Liberia: Town Centre vs the Airport Strip
The two clusters are about 11 km apart with no useful walking route between them, and a taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes. Our read: stay in town unless a flight time genuinely forces you out to Ruta 21.
The town centre and Calle Real
Liberia's old quarter runs along the Calle Real, a street of low white adobe houses leading down to the central park and the church. Hotel Liberia and Hotel Primavera are both about 600 metres from the park, with Hotel Del Aserradero, Hotel Boyeros and the Best Western El Sitio a little over a kilometre out. Staying here means you can walk to a restaurant rather than eat in a lobby, which in a town this size is the main argument for it. Rates run $38 to $118. The trade is that the centre is workaday rather than picturesque, and many businesses close earlier than they do in the beach towns, so evening dining options are more limited than you may expect.
The airport strip on Ruta 21
The Hampton by Hilton and the Hilton Garden Inn sit together on Ruta 21 beside the airport area, roughly 1.1 km and 1.4 km from the LIR terminal and 11.7 km and 11.3 km from Liberia's central park. Both list a free airport shuttle and an outdoor pool. They are the two highest-scoring bookable properties on this page at 8.7 and 8.4, and the most expensive at $120 and $126. This is a functional strip rather than a neighbourhood, with no restaurants or shops within walking distance, so plan to eat at the hotel or drive. The highway approaches
Hotel Las Espuelas sits 2.6 km south on the Panamericana and Hotel del Rio 1.7 km west of the centre, both with their own parking and both aimed at people driving through. Neither returned live rates for us, so both are book-direct. They make most sense if you have a rental car and want to be on the road out rather than in the middle of town.
What is not in Liberia at all
Two clusters nearby get confused with Liberia in search results and are worth naming so you do not book the wrong place. The Papagayo beach resorts sit 11 to 13 km from the airport but 23 km from Liberia itself, on the coast. The Rincon de la Vieja lodges sit 25 to 28 km northeast, up on the volcano. Both are genuinely different trips with different prices, and neither is included in the ranking on this page.

That restaurant is the one practical facility it lists that the Hampton's facility list does not. For anyone searching the Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Costa Rica by name, that restaurant is usually the deciding detail, because there is nowhere else to eat on this stretch of Ruta 21 after dark.

It sits at the entrance to town on the Panamericana with an outdoor pool, a separate kids pool and a restaurant. The score is mid-table and the property is long-established rather than new, but the volume behind that 7.9 means you know what you are getting, and it is the most family-shaped hotel in town that we can actually book.
