The best things to do in San José, Costa Rica, from a $35 market food walk, a sloth walk and a night out to ziplining in the hills, a wildlife rescue centre, two volcanoes, Pacuare rafting and day trips to Arenal, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero and Tortuga Island, with what each costs and which to book first.
What to Know Before Planning Things to Do in San José
- San José is Costa Rica's capital in the Central Valley. Its markets, museums and food scene fill a day or two; volcanoes, coffee farms, ziplines and rafting are 30 minutes to two hours away, and Arenal and the Pacific beaches are long day trips.
- The best things to do in the city itself are a market food walk, a sloth and bird walk with a biologist, a guided walk past the National Theatre, an evening cooking and cocktail class, a bar crawl and a chocolate class.
- In-city tours cost $35 to $57.50, half-days nearby from $35, and day trips with pickup $115 to $230, checked live on 5 November 2026. The Arenal day rises from $165 to $169 on 1 December 2026.
- Most day trips from San José start between 05:00 and 07:30 and run 10 to 15 hours, much of it on the road; guests who planned one big day trip and kept the next day light enjoyed them most.
Things to Do in San José: What's Worth Your Time
San José itself is worth a day or two, but its biggest advantage is its location in the Central Valley: you can visit volcanoes, coffee farms and rainforest adventures without changing hotels, although the longer day trips run 12 to 18 hours door to door. The best things to do in San José, Costa Rica come in two kinds. In the city, you eat your way through the Central and Borbón markets, look for sloths with a biologist on the university campus, walk past the National Theatre and the plazas of the old centre, learn to make cocktails and empanadas at a chef's table, join a bar crawl or make your own chocolate in Barrio Escalante. Around it, the Central Valley gives you volcano craters at Poás and Irazú, the Rescate wildlife rescue centre near the airport, coffee farms, ziplines in the hills above Tres Ríos and the Pacuare River's rapids, while Arenal, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero and Tortuga Island are long but popular day trips.
Our pick if you only book one: San Jose Urban Tours' Bites and Sights market walk. Rated 4.8 from 1,944 reviews at $35, it gets you through both downtown markets, past the main sights and into a typical lunch with an empanada you make yourself, the best short introduction to the city and its food.

The 7 Best Things to Do in and Around San José Itself, Reviewed
First the six experiences inside the city, then the zipline in the hills just outside it. Prices are per adult unless noted.
Eat Your Way Through the Central Market
San Jose Urban Tours · $35 · 4.8 from 1,944 reviews · 3.5 hrs · Mon to Sat
A walk from the Monumento de los Presentes through the Borbón and Central markets, with fruit tastings side by side and spiced ice cream from a stall open for more than 100 years, past the Cathedral and the National Theatre, then upstairs at a coffee shop for tamales, picadillo, an empanada you make yourself and chorreado coffee.
We'd book it on your first day: it teaches you the fruit, the dishes and the layout of downtown. Eat something light first, because most of the food comes at the end. Our San José food tour guide compares it with five other tastings.
Look for Sloths With a Biologist on the University Campus
Oropopo Experience · $35, $15 ages 4 to 12 · 4.9 from 1,244 reviews · 2.5 hrs · daily, 08:30, 11:00 or 14:00
A slow walk through the grounds of the University of Costa Rica in San Pedro with a young biologist and a telescope, looking for sloths, owls, birds and butterflies in the middle of the city. Recent guests saw three to seven sloths, including mothers with babies, and say it is easy for anyone with limited mobility.
We'd book it if you have not seen sloths yet or have a gap before a flight. Wear closed shoes, which are required. A few older reviews felt it was just a walk around a campus, so go for the nature, not for a big wildlife show.
Walk the Old Centre With a Local Guide
Syl Travel Day Tours · $45, $17 ages 2 to 12 · 4.9 from 323 reviews · 3 hrs · daily
A small-group walk from the yellow National Museum on Plaza de la Democracia through the government buildings, parks and plazas, with the story of how coffee paid for the National Theatre, plus a coffee stop and a few food surprises. Guests praise guides who adapt the pace to children and grandparents.
Two May 2026 guests felt it was expensive for a walking tour with souvenir and coffee shop stops. We'd choose it over the food walk if history matters more than tasting. Our San José city tour guide compares it with bus and food tours.
Mix Cocktails and Cook Dinner on San José by Night
San Jose Urban Tours · $57 · 4.8 from 565 reviews · 4 hrs · Mon to Sat, 16:00
A late-afternoon walk through the Central Market and along Avenida Central, then a chef's table where you mix four Costa Rican cocktails (mojito, morenito, michelada and chiliguaro), make empanadas and sit down to a dinner of traditional bocas. Recent guests call it the highlight of their time in San José, and solo travellers say the group made it easy.
It is adults only and starts from the same monument as the food walk. One October 2026 booking was cancelled at the last minute, so keep the operator's number. Older reviews found the cocktails small; recent ones say you will not leave hungry or thirsty.
Join the Downtown Bar Crawl
CrawlTours Costa Rica · $40, ages 18 to 60 · 4.8 from 169 reviews · 3 hrs · Thu to Sat, 21:00
A host-led night through several downtown bars, with drinks and covers included, games to break the ice and plenty of shots of guaro. Solo travellers and groups of friends both describe making friends for the night.
The night depends on the host and the group: most recent hosts get glowing reviews, but a couple of guests had hosts who drifted off. The included drinks come mostly at the first bars, so budget for more, and take a taxi or Uber home. The party-bus nightlife tours we looked at had no recent reviews, so we left them out.
Make Your Own Chocolate in Barrio Escalante
Tapir Chocolates · $57.50, all ages from 2 · 4.9 from 161 reviews · 2 hrs · daily, 15:00
The owner takes you from a fresh cacao pod to finished chocolate, with a taste at each stage, then you make two bars with your own fillings and decorate the wrappers. Families with children from 4 to 18 count it among their trip highlights, and it works on a rainy afternoon.
It runs in a converted room of the owner's house with no sign, and children pay the full price. Barrio Escalante, the city's restaurant district, is the place to stay on for dinner afterwards.
Zipline Above the Central Valley at La Carpintera
La Carpintera Canopy Tour · $51.29, $43.08 ages 6 to 9 · 4.9 from 555 reviews · 3 hrs · daily
The closest zipline to the city, about 14 km away in Tres Ríos: 13 cables, the longest about 500 m, and two rappels, with views over the valley. Guests rave about guides who keep a person at the back for anyone struggling.
The catch is the steep staircase of up to about 45 minutes to the first platform, and you get there yourself by taxi or Uber. Our zipline near San José guide compares it with the rainforest course at Braulio Carrillo.
The 8 Best Excursions and Day Trips From San José, Reviewed
All but the rescue centre collect you from your San José hotel. The first four stay in the Central Valley and its edges; the last four are long days to Arenal, the Caribbean, the Pacific and the Gulf of Nicoya. Our Costa Rica tours from San José guide compares more options for each.
See Rescued Animals at Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center
Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center Zooave · $35, $15 ages 2 to 12 · 4.8 from 227 reviews · 2 to 4 hrs · daily
A rescue and rehabilitation centre near the airport in Alajuela, with jaguars, ocelots, pumas, monkeys, toucans, parrots and owls in large, planted enclosures and iguanas and peacocks roaming free. Guests praise the bilingual signs and the restaurant, and several fitted it in before an early flight.
The ticket covers entry only, so you need your own way there; a guided tour costs extra by reservation. Arrive at opening, when the animals are most active, and bring bug spray. Older reviews found the dense planting made some animals hard to spot.
See Poás Volcano, a Coffee Farm and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
ASSISTTOURS · $185 · 4.9 from 823 reviews · 10 hrs · daily
The most reviewed day trip from San José: a coffee plantation, the Poás crater and an afternoon at La Paz Waterfall Gardens with its rescued animals, five waterfalls and a buffet lunch. 766 of its 823 reviews are five stars.
Clouds often cover the crater by late morning, and visitors get up to 20 minutes at the viewpoint. Our Poás Volcano tour guide and Poás rules guide cover the alternatives and the current limits, and our San José coffee tour guide covers days with more time on the farm.
Stand on Irazú's Crater and Drive the Orosi Valley
Summer Travel Costa Rica · $149.99 · 4.7 from 78 reviews · 7.5 hrs · daily, 07:00
Irazú, Costa Rica's highest volcano, then the Basilica in Cartago, Lankester Botanical Garden, the Orosi Valley and lunch by Lake Cachí, which guests single out as one of the best meals of their trip. Most recent guests had the same guide and praise his knowledge of every stop.
Bring a warm layer: guests found the summit chilly and the clouds quick to roll in. One October 2026 guest was never collected and one July 2026 guest had a guide who spoke mostly Spanish, so confirm the pickup and ask for an English-speaking guide.
Raft the Pacuare River's Class III and IV Rapids
Destination Services Costa Rica · $125 · 4.7 from 252 reviews · 10 hrs · daily, 06:00
About 18 miles of rapids through a rainforest canyon east of Turrialba, with breakfast on the way and lunch on the riverbank. Guests praise guides who keep first-timers safe, and it is the most-booked Pacuare day from the city.
Four guests in the first half of 2026 were never picked up, so book two days ahead and confirm the night before. When rain makes the Pacuare too high, operators switch to a calmer river. Our Pacuare rafting guide compares eight trips.
Make the Long Day to Arenal and Its Hot Springs
Go Tours Costa Rica · $165 · 4.9 from 1,713 reviews · 14 hrs · daily, 06:30
A coffee stop, a waterfall, wildlife on the roadside, lunch near Arenal and an afternoon in thermal pools at the volcano's base, with dinner on the way back. Recent guests praise guides who stop for sloths and keep the van laughing. The price rises to $169 on 1 December 2026.
It is a very long day, most of it in the van, and clouds can hide the volcano. Several guests found the souvenir and indigenous-village stops thin. If you have time, staying in La Fortuna is better: our San José to La Fortuna guide covers the transfer, and our best things to do in La Fortuna guide covers what to do there.
Spot Sloths and Monkeys in Manuel Antonio
Go Tours Costa Rica · $169, $154 ages 5 to 11 · 4.9 from 840 reviews · 12 hrs · Mon, Thu and Sat
A guided walk in Manuel Antonio National Park, where guests saw sloths, monkeys, snakes and crabs thanks to guides' spotting, with time on the park's beach, stops at the Tárcoles crocodile bridge and a Jacó lookout, and breakfast and lunch. You can be dropped in Manuel Antonio instead of returning.
It only runs three days a week. Guests say it is a long drive, and a few felt the time inside the park was short. Our Manuel Antonio National Park tour guide compares guided walks, and our things to do in Manuel Antonio guide covers the rest of the area for those staying there.
Take a Boat Through the Tortuguero Canals
Destiny Travel Costa Rica · $230, $175 ages 4 to 11 · 4.7 from 86 reviews · 12.5 hrs · daily, 05:30
A long day across Braulio Carrillo to Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast, with breakfast, a boat ride through the canals looking for monkeys, sloths, crocodiles and birds, a walk in the park and lunch. Small groups of three to nine are common, and guests call the canal boat the highlight.
It is the most expensive day trip here and you do not see the turtle-nesting beaches, which need a night. Some guests found the 600-plus steps on the park walk hard work. If you can stay longer, the two-night Tortuguero package from San José costs $498.95, rising to $549 from 14 December 2026, though it is rated 4.4.
Spend a Day on Tortuga Island
Inside Tours Costa Rica · $115, $95 ages 4 to 11 · 4.5 from 714 reviews · 12 to 18 hrs · daily
A boat ride across the Gulf of Nicoya, often with dolphins, to a white-sand island for about five hours of beach time, snorkelling and lunch. Guests who loved it praise the guides and the boat ride.
It has the most complaints of any trip here: a start as early as 04:45, about three hours on the bus each way with no food allowed on board, and charges on the island for chairs and umbrellas. Pickup times come by WhatsApp the evening before, so give a working number. If you are on the coast later, our Tortuga Island from Jacó guide is a shorter way to go.
Monteverde is the one big name we left off: the only day trip from San José with recent reviews is rated 4.1, and the cloud forest deserves a night there.
Where the Best Things to Do Around San José Are
The map shows why the day trips split into short and long. Poás, La Paz, Irazú and La Carpintera sit around the Central Valley within about an hour or two of the city; the Pacuare base is about two and a half hours east; and Arenal, Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio and the Gulf of Nicoya for Tortuga Island are three hours or more each way, which is why those trips start at dawn and end after dark.
Free Things to Do in San José
You do not need a tour for the best of downtown. These cost nothing beyond what you eat or buy:
- Browse the Central Market on your own. The market, open since 1880, is the place for a casado at a soda, fresh fruit juice and coffee to take home. Go before late afternoon, when stalls start to close.
- Walk Avenida Central and the plazas. The pedestrian boulevard links the market to Plaza de la Cultura and the National Theatre, past the Metropolitan Cathedral and Morazán Park.
- Spend a morning in La Sabana Park, the big green park at the west end of the city, popular with runners and families at weekends.
- Eat out in Barrio Escalante, east of the centre, where the city's restaurants, coffee shops and cocktail bars are clustered; it is free to walk and the best area for dinner.
- See the outside of the National Museum, the yellow former barracks on Plaza de la Democracia, where the cultural walking tour starts.
Downtown is busy and guides suggest leaving flashy jewellery at the hotel and taking a taxi or Uber after dark. Guests on the evening tour and the food walk felt fine in a group.
Things to Do in San José for Families, Couples and Rainy Days
- Families: the chocolate class (from age 2), the sloth walk ($15 for ages 4 to 12), Rescate wildlife centre ($15 for ages 2 to 12) and La Paz Waterfall Gardens on the Poás day are the easy wins. La Carpintera takes children from 6, but the climb is hard on small legs.
- Couples: San José by Night is the best evening out, and a day on the Pacuare or at Arenal's hot springs makes the big shared memory.
- Solo travellers: the market walk, the evening class and the bar crawl are where solo guests most often describe making friends.
- Rainy days: the chocolate class, the market walk and the cocktail class are mostly under cover; save the volcanoes for a clear morning.
- Arrival or departure day: the food walk, the sloth walk and Rescate, near the airport, are short enough to fit around a flight; our hotels near San José airport guide covers where to sleep before an early one.
How Much Do Things to Do in San José Cost?
Things to do in San José cost $35 to $57.50 per adult in the city, $35 for Rescate and $51.29 for the zipline just outside it, and $115 to $230 for day trips with hotel pickup. The city experiences rarely include transport, while every day trip here does, along with at least one meal. Tips are extra on all of them.
The market food walk ($70 for two) and the chocolate class ($115 for two); San José by Night adds $114 on another evening.
ASSISTTOURS' Poás, coffee and La Paz day for two, with lunch and park entries included.
The food walk, the chocolate class, the Poás day and Pacuare rafting for two, before tips, taxis and dinners.
One price changes soon: the Arenal day rises from $165 to $169 on 1 December 2026. Tortuguero is the priciest day here at $230; the Tortuga Island day is the cheapest at $115.
Our Take
What we consistently see across these listings is that San José rewards a split plan: the city experiences are short, cheap and highly rated, while the day trips are long and the complaints about them are mostly about hours in a van. Pair one big day out with city time either side, rather than stacking day trips back to back.
Tips for Things to Do in San José
- Don't stack long day trips. Arenal, Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio and Tortuga Island each run 12 to 18 hours; one is plenty in a short stay.
- Do the volcanoes early. Poás and Irazú are clearest in the morning, and guests on both describe clouds rolling in by late morning.
- Confirm every pickup the night before. Missed pickups are the most common complaint across the day trips; message the operator with your hotel and room.
- Give a working WhatsApp number. Several operators, including the Tortuga Island trip, send pickup times by WhatsApp the evening before.
- Plan around the calendar. Both San Jose Urban Tours experiences are off on Sundays, the bar crawl runs Thursday to Saturday, and the Manuel Antonio day runs only Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
- Bring a warm layer for the mountains and a rain jacket for the green season, from May to November.
- Heading on from San José? Our guides to the best things to do in La Fortuna, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio cover the next stops, and our best hotels in San José guide ranks the downtown, Escazú and La Sabana options.

How We Selected These Experiences
The Costa Rica Day Trip team started from the top pick or best-rated verified option in each of our detailed San José guides (food tours, city tours, coffee tours, ziplining, Pacuare rafting and Poás Volcano tours) and our guide to day trips from the city, then added the best-reviewed Irazú, Tortuguero, wildlife rescue, sloth walk, evening, nightlife and chocolate experiences. We checked every listing live on 5 November 2026: price by age, days and start times, inclusions, pickup, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We required a guest review in the last six months. We left out a Monteverde day trip from San José rated 4.1, an Irazú day trip with no review since January, two party-bus nightlife tours with no review since February 2026 and May 2025, a Tortuguero day trip rated 3.9, and several city and day tours with only one or two recent reviews. Tortuga Island stays in despite a 4.5 rating because it is the main beach day from the city; its card lists the complaints. We then read the most recent reviews of every pick, plus the latest one- to three-star reviews, and reused our review analysis from the detailed guides for the five experiences they already cover.
