Eight ways to raft the Pacuare River: six day trips that collect you from San José, two top-rated departures from Turrialba, and what the long day, the age limits and high water really mean for your trip.

What to Know Before Booking Pacuare Rafting from San José

  • A guided day of Class III and IV white water on the Pacuare River, east of Turrialba, with three to four hours in the raft through a rainforest canyon and lunch by the river.
  • From San José it is a 10 to 12-hour day: pickup between 05:00 and 06:30, breakfast on the way, about two and a half hours' drive each way and back in the city by early evening.
  • Day trips with San José pickup, breakfast and lunch cost $119 to $150 per person. Turrialba-based operators charge $99 to $125 if you stay near the river the night before.
  • When the Pacuare runs too high after rain, operators move groups to a calmer river such as the Pejibaye, and the reviews that mention it describe no refund being offered. Know this before you book in the wet season.

Pacuare River Rafting: What You're Booking

Pacuare rafting from San José is the classic white-water day trip in Costa Rica. The Pacuare runs through a deep rainforest canyon on the Caribbean side of the mountains, and the day-trip section starts near Tres Equis, east of Turrialba, with about 18 miles (29 km) of Class III and IV rapids, waterfalls on both banks and calm stretches where you can jump in and float. It is not a lazy float: guests describe it as a real arm workout, and first-timers manage it because the guides steer and call every stroke.

The Pacuare River rafting itself is much the same on every trip. What changes is the day around it: whether you are collected in San José at 05:30 or meet the guides in Turrialba at 08:00, how big the bus is, whether breakfast is included, and what the operator does when the river is too high to run.

Every Pacuare Rafting Trip, Reviewed

First the five day trips that collect you in San José, then the two Turrialba outfitters and the trip from the Caribbean coast. Prices are per person; no operator here charges less for children.

1
Our Pick: Best from San José

Destination Services Costa Rica: Pacuare from San José

$125 · 4.7 from 252 reviews · 10 hrs · daily, 06:00 pickup

The most-booked Pacuare day trip from the city. You are collected at 06:00, stop for a Costa Rican breakfast in Turrialba, gear up at the Tres Equis base and raft the canyon past named rapids such as Huacas and Pinball, with a riverside lunch partway down. Recent guests praise guides who keep first-timers and teenagers safe, and several mention jumping in to swim between rapids.

The weak spot is the pickup, not the river. Four guests in the first half of 2026 waited at their hotel and were never collected, including one who booked the evening before. Book at least two days ahead and confirm your hotel and time by phone or message the day before. The listing's age band stops at 55, although a guest in their 60s rafted with them in May 2026; check with the operator if that affects you.

Lowest price with pickup

Costa Rica Groups Travel Company: Pacuare from San José

$119 · 4.6 from 70 reviews · 12 hrs · daily, 05:30 pickup

The cheapest trip that collects you in San José, with breakfast, lunch and an air-conditioned bus, and an age range of 12 to 90. Guests describe a well-organized base with space to change and store bags, plenty of food and guides who teach beginners to paddle properly.

We'd book it to save a few dollars if you are over 55. The tradeoff is consistency: its low reviews include a guide whose comments made a March 2026 guest uncomfortable and a late pickup in February 2026, and one guest noted their raft guide came from another rafting company. It is also the longest day here at 12 hours.

3
Best small-company option

Excitement Costa Rica: Full Day Pacuare

$124 · 4.8 from 17 reviews · full day · daily

A full day from San José with breakfast, lunch and a safety kayaker on the water. The listing publishes its pickup times, from 05:00 in Alajuela to 06:30 at the Hyatt Place, so you know exactly when to be in the lobby. Sixteen of its 17 reviews are five stars, with guests praising guides who mix humor with tight safety.

The listing promises five hours of rafting, but its one poor review, from 2024, describes being moved to another river for two hours when the Pacuare was high, with no choice of a refund. That is the main risk on any Pacuare trip in the wet season.

Best for older travelers

Destiny Travel Costa Rica: Pacuare Day Trip

$139 · 5.0 from 6 reviews · 11 hrs · daily, 05:30 pickup

A San José day trip with breakfast, lunch and an air-conditioned minivan, and the widest age range of the city departures: 11 to 90. The listing is unusually clear on fitness, with a maximum weight of 125 kg and a note that recent surgery rules you out.

All six reviews are five stars and four came in the past year, but that is a small record to judge by. We'd shortlist it if you are over 55 and want a tour whose listing welcomes you rather than one that stops at 55.

5
Best personal outfitter

Turrialtours: Pacuare Class IV

$150 from San José, $125 from Turrialba · 5.0 from 5 reviews · 8 hrs from Turrialba

A small outfitter run by a guide who says he has 24 years on the Pacuare; the listing promises 4x4 transport rather than a bus and takes guests from age 10. Families with children aged 7 and 11 describe a trip tailored to the kids, and an October 2026 group was switched to another river when the weather turned and still enjoyed it.

It has only one review in the past year, so we can't vouch for it the way we can for the bigger operators. Treat it as an option for families with 10 and 11-year-olds, who most other operators turn away.

Best rated (from Turrialba)

Adrenalina Rafting Turrialba: Pacuare One Day

$99 · 5.0 from 385 reviews · 6 hrs · daily, 08:00

The best-rated Pacuare trip here, with 374 of its 385 reviews at five stars, and the cheapest. It picks you up from any hotel or guesthouse in the Turrialba area at 08:00, rafts the canyon with a stop at a waterfall, and finishes with a Costa Rican lunch. Guests mention two Class IV sections and a chance to try a kayak on the way down.

The listing only collects in the Turrialba area, which is why it is not our pick for this page, although one March 2026 guest describes a 12-hour day with transport from San José, so it is worth asking. If you can spend the night before in Turrialba, about two hours from the city, we'd give it the edge: you trade a 05:30 bus for an 08:00 start and save $20 or more.

7
Best base camp

Explornatura: Pacuare from Turrialba

$120 · 5.0 from 196 reviews · 6 hrs · daily, 07:45 or 08:00

A Turrialba outfitter with its own base camp, where guests praise a thorough half-hour safety briefing, a safety kayaker ahead of the raft and a lunch the guides cook on the riverbank. Families mention a gentler section near Tres Equis for younger paddlers. You meet at the office in Turrialba.

Read the small print: if the Pacuare is dangerously high, the listing says the trip moves to the Pejibaye River and no refund applies. That is honest, and most operators do the same in practice, but here it is in writing.

Best from the Caribbean

Destination Services Costa Rica: Pacuare from Puerto Viejo

$147 · 4.8 from 63 reviews · 7.5 hrs listed · daily, 06:00 pickup

The same operator's trip from Puerto Viejo, with breakfast, lunch, lockers and changing rooms. Guests describe a drive of two to three hours each way, and two used it to break up the journey between the Caribbean and the rest of the country, with a one-way drop-off arranged with the operator.

Expect the same pickup risk as from San José: one May 2026 group waited more than an hour and was never collected. Ages run to 70 here, not 55.

Check availability

Two-day trips with a night at a lodge in the canyon are the other way to see the Pacuare, and several guests wished they had done one. The only two-day trip we found in this catalog has had no review since January 2026, so we left it out.

From San José or from Turrialba? And What Happens When the River Is High

Every trip here rafts the same canyon. The real decision is where you start, and the second is what you will accept if the river is too high on the day. The map shows the road the San José trips take: east through Cartago and Turrialba to the rafting base at Tres Equis, about 89 km.

Starting pointDrive to the riverPickupPrice
Downtown San JoséAbout 2.5 to 3 hrs to Tres Equis via Cartago and Turrialba05:00 to 06:30$119 to $150
TurrialbaAbout 40 min to Tres Equis07:45 to 08:00$99 to $125
Puerto ViejoTwo to three hours, per guests06:00$147

Drive times from San José and Turrialba are our calculation from Mapbox routes without traffic: downtown San José to Turrialba is about 58 km and just under two hours, and the full 89 km to Tres Equis just under three. One operator's listing puts the drive at about two and a half hours. Guests on the San José trips describe a stop for breakfast on the way and traffic on the return, so plan on being back in the city around 16:00 to 18:00.

Our take (the high-water switch): This is where trips really differ, and it is the most common surprise in reviews. When rain pushes the Pacuare too high to raft safely, operators move groups to a gentler river, usually the Pejibaye. Guests of four different operators describe it, from October 2026 back to 2024, and the reviews that mention money describe no refund being offered. Most still enjoyed the switch, but one group got two hours on the water instead of five. If you are visiting in the wetter months and the Pacuare itself is the point, keep a spare day in your plans so you can move the trip.

The flip side comes in the driest months. Guests rafting in March and April noted low, shallow water, so the rapids are tamer then. Either way, the canyon, the waterfalls and the warm water are the constant.

How Much Does Pacuare Rafting from San José Cost?

A Pacuare rafting day trip with San José pickup costs $119 to $150 per person, with breakfast, lunch and gear included on all of them. Turrialba departures cost $99 to $125 but leave you to get to Turrialba and usually to pay for a night there. Tips are extra everywhere, and the river photos are sold separately; one guest paid $30 for a USB of the day's photos in 2023.

Couple, from San José$238 to $300

Costa Rica Groups at $238 for two, Destination Services at $250, Excitement Costa Rica at $248 or Turrialtours at $300.

Couple, from TurrialbaFrom $198

Adrenalina Rafting Turrialba at $198 for two, plus the night in Turrialba and your own way there.

Family of four, two teensFrom $476

Every operator charges teenagers the adult price. From San José that is $476 with Costa Rica Groups or $500 with Destination Services; from Turrialba, $396 with Adrenalina.

Age limits matter more than price for many families: only Turrialtours (from 10) and Destiny Travel (from 11) take children under 12, and Destination Services' San José listing stops at 55.

Our Take

The pattern we keep seeing in reviews is that the river almost never disappoints: the complaints are about the hotel pickup that never came and the day the Pacuare was too high. Booking a couple of days ahead and confirming the pickup the evening before removes most of the risk.

Tips for Pacuare Rafting from San José

  • Book at least two days ahead. Guests who booked the day before were the ones most often left waiting at their hotel.
  • Confirm your pickup the evening before. Message the operator with your hotel name and room, and check the pickup time. One Turrialba guest went to the wrong one of two similarly named hotels.
  • Cover up against the sun. Several guests were badly sunburned on the river, mostly on their legs and knees. A long-sleeved swim shirt and quick-dry trousers beat reapplying sunscreen in the spray.
  • Wear shoes that stay on. Water shoes or sandals with ankle straps, not flip-flops, and bring a towel and a full change of clothes for the drive back.
  • Expect to paddle. Guests are clear that this is an arm workout, with breaks between rapids. You don't need experience, but you do need to follow the guide's calls.
  • Treat wildlife as a bonus. Some guests spotted toucans, a sloth or a boa from the raft; a January 2026 guest saw none and felt the listing oversold it. The canyon and the waterfalls are the sure thing.
  • Leave the phone behind. Waterproof cases are not included, and the operators sell photos of you on the rapids.
  • Spending the night in Turrialba? Adrenalina collects from any hotel or guesthouse in the area, and Explornatura recommended Casa Turire to one December 2025 guest, who called it an excellent choice.
  • Staying in the area? Turrialba is also where you'll find the Aquiares coffee farm in our San José coffee tour guide, and our Costa Rica tours from San José guide covers the other full days from the city. Our zipline near San José guide covers Explornatura's waterfall canyoning near Turrialba, and our best things to do in San José guide ranks everything else in and around the capital.
  • Where to sleep before an early start? Our best hotels in San José guide ranks the downtown, Escazú and La Sabana options, several of them on the pickup lists.

How We Selected These Tours

The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every Pacuare River rafting trip sold from San José, Turrialba and the Caribbean coast and checked each listing live on 5 November 2026: price by pickup option, ages, start times, inclusions, pickup lists, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. Drive times are our calculation from Mapbox routes. We required a guest review in the last six months. We left out a well-rated Pacuare trip with no review since April 2026, a one-day trip with transport and lunch with none since February, the only two-day trip we found (no review since January), and a listing with no reviews at all. Turrialtours has only one review in the past year, which we flag on its card. We also left out Sarapiquí and Reventazón river trips from San José, which are different rivers. We then read 277 reviews of the eight trips, the most recent of each plus the latest one- to three-star reviews, looking at pickups, how long the day really ran, how often the river was switched and how the guides handled first-timers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Pacuare River from San José?+

The day-trip base near Tres Equis is about 89 km from downtown San José, a drive of two and a half to three hours via Cartago and Turrialba. Day trips collect you between 05:00 and 06:30 and get you back in the late afternoon, a 10 to 12-hour day.

How much does Pacuare rafting from San José cost?+

Based on prices checked on 5 November 2026, day trips with San José pickup, breakfast and lunch cost $119 to $150 per person. Turrialba-based operators charge $99 to $125 if you get to Turrialba yourself.

Is Pacuare rafting good for beginners?+

Yes. Most guests in reviews were first-timers, and the guides steer and call every stroke through the Class III and IV rapids. Expect to paddle hard, though: guests describe it as a real arm workout.

What is the minimum age for Pacuare rafting?+

Most trips take ages 12 and up. Destiny Travel takes 11-year-olds and Turrialtours 10-year-olds. At the other end, Destination Services' San José listing stops at 55, while Costa Rica Groups, Adrenalina and Destiny Travel take guests up to 90.

What happens if the Pacuare River is too high?+

Operators move the group to a gentler river, usually the Pejibaye, and the reviews that mention it describe no refund for the switch. Explornatura's listing says this in writing. Keep a spare day if the Pacuare itself is the point of your trip.

Can I do Pacuare rafting without a tour from San José?+

Yes, if you stay in Turrialba. Adrenalina Rafting Turrialba picks up from Turrialba-area hotels at 08:00 for $99, and Explornatura meets guests at its Turrialba base for $120. Turrialba is about two hours from San José.

What should I wear for Pacuare rafting?+

Quick-dry clothes over a swimsuit, water shoes or sandals with ankle straps, and sun protection for your arms and legs. Bring a towel and a change of clothes for the drive back.
