Six ways to go ziplining from San José, from La Carpintera's course in the hills above Tres Ríos to the rainforest lines at Braulio Carrillo, waterfall canyoning near Turrialba and full-day trips to the coast or Arenal.
What to Know Before Booking a Zipline Near San José
- The closest zipline to San José is La Carpintera in the hills above Tres Ríos, about 14 km from downtown; the rainforest course at Braulio Carrillo is about an hour away on Route 32.
- The two closest courses run 2.5 to 3 hours with morning and early-afternoon starts, and you get there yourself by car, taxi or Uber; day trips with pickup run 10 to 14 hours.
- Courses near the city cost $51.29 to $78 per adult, a full park day with an aerial tram $116, and day trips that include a zipline $171.30 to $185 with transport and lunch.
- At La Carpintera the hardest part is not the zipline but the climb: guests describe a steep staircase of up to about 45 minutes before the first platform, far longer than the 15-minute hike the listing mentions.
Ziplining Near San José: What You're Booking
A zipline near San José, Costa Rica is the easiest way to fit a canopy tour into a stay in the capital, without the long drive to Arenal or Monteverde. Two courses are close enough for a morning or an afternoon: La Carpintera, in a forest reserve on the hills above Tres Ríos, and Rainforest Adventures' course in the rainforest beside Braulio Carrillo National Park. Further out, a canyoning course near Turrialba adds waterfall rappels, and two full-day trips from the city add a zipline to an adventure park near the Pacific coast or a day at Arenal.
Every zip line in San José's surroundings follows the same pattern: a safety briefing, a walk or climb to the first platform, a series of cables of growing length and a big finale line. What changes is how far you travel, whether transport is included and what else is in the day.

La Carpintera Canopy Tour: Zip Line, Rappel and Hiking
Our pick because it is the closest zipline to San José and the cheapest, with 13 cables, two rappels and views over the Central Valley in a three-hour morning or afternoon. 538 of its 555 reviews are five stars, and guests keep praising guides who wait at the back for anyone struggling on the climb.

This follows La Carpintera's three-hour tour, our top pick. Rainforest Adventures follows the same steps, with shorter uphill walks between platforms.
Our take (the climb): The pattern we keep seeing in La Carpintera's reviews is that guests rate the ziplines easy and the stairs hard. Nobody is rushed, and a guide stays at the back, but if knees, lungs or heat are a concern, the Braulio Carrillo course has no long staircase to start, though guests still call it a workout in places.

La Carpintera Canopy Tour: Zip Line, Rappel and Hiking
$51.29, $43.08 ages 6 to 9 · 4.9 from 555 reviews · 3 hrs · daily, 08:30 or 12:30
The closest course to the city, in a forest reserve on the La Carpintera hills above Tres Ríos. You climb to the top, then work down through 19 platforms and 13 cables, the longest about 500 m, with two rappels of 40 m and 10 m, looking out over the Central Valley and, on clear days, the volcanoes. Guests describe a guide at the front and one at the back, plenty of photos and videos taken for them, and the occasional sloth. Groups are often small: a May 2026 group was four people, whose tour ran about 2.5 hours, and a September 2026 solo guest had the slot to themselves.
We'd book it if you want ziplining without losing a day, but know what the start involves. The listing mentions a 15-minute hike; guests describe a steep staircase of up to about 45 minutes, the part most of them call the hardest of the day. Guests slow themselves with an arm on the line, and one April 2026 guest who braked hard was sore for days afterward. You also get there yourself: one December 2025 guest could not reach the operator for the meeting point on the morning of the tour, so save the location and the phone number when you book.
Rainforest Adventures: Zipline at Braulio Carrillo
$78, $55 ages 5 to 12 · 4.8 from 53 reviews · 2.5 hrs · daily, 08:00, 10:00 or 14:00
The course in proper rainforest, at Rainforest Adventures' park beside Braulio Carrillo National Park on Route 32. Ten cables run from short, slow lines to the Adrena-Line, which guests put at about 700 m and up to a minute long. Guests praise careful, bilingual guides, lockers and the open-air restaurant, and some saw sloths, a tapir or toucans on the trails. The lines build up gradually, which nervous first-timers appreciate: the first few are short and slow, the last ones long and fast. The listing sells it through Elite Shore Excursions.
It is about an hour's drive, so we'd give it the edge if you want rainforest rather than city views. Bring proper rain gear: it rains a lot here. If you book it with transport, ask whether you share the van with guests doing the longer park day; several zipline-only guests ended up waiting hours for them. Route 32 also closes for landslides at times; one August 2026 guest never arrived and was refunded in full.
Rainforest Adventures: Zipline and Aerial Tram Pass
$116, $76 ages 5 to 12; $172 from San José · 4.6 from 84 reviews · 5 hrs at the park
The same park and zipline, plus a guided ride on the aerial tram through the canopy, a nature walk and the butterfly, frog and snake exhibits. Guests rate the zipline and the quiet hour on the tram highly, and families like that non-zippers can ride the tram instead. The option with transport from San José costs $172, or $189 all-inclusive.
The tradeoff is the rest of the pass: several guests found the exhibits small and the restaurant food poor and expensive, and one found 6-in-1 meant four real activities. We'd only choose it over the zipline-only ticket if someone in your group wants the tram. It is on sale for $98.60 until 6 November 2026.
Explornatura: Canyoneering and Canopy near Turrialba
$114, ages 7 and up · 5.0 from 65 reviews · 3 hrs · daily, 08:30 or 12:30
Ziplines between waterfall rappels: guests describe five ziplines, three or four rappels down waterfalls, a hanging bridge and a small climbing wall, with a home-cooked lunch at the base. Sixty-four of its 65 reviews are five stars, and families with children from 8 to 13 describe guides who were patient with nervous kids, with routes around the biggest falls if needed.
It is the most physical option here and you get very wet, so wear shoes with grip, not slippery sandals. It is near Turrialba, about two hours from San José, so we'd pair it with a night there and the Pacuare River rafting the same company runs.
Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park: Day from San José
$171.30, ages 12 to 80 · 4.7 from 148 reviews · 10 hrs · daily, 07:30 pickup
A day at an adventure park in the hills near Herradura, about two hours from San José, with hotel pickup, lunch and two activities chosen from a zipline with ocean views, an ATV ride to waterfalls, a surf lesson and a chocolate tour. Recent guests most often pair the zipline with the ATV, and praise the drivers and the swim at a waterfall pool.
You must name your two activities at least 24 hours ahead, or take what is left on the day. The ATV needs a $1,000 card hold or $25 insurance, and the weight limit is 260 lb. A couple of guests found the zipline quick or hard to control, and one February 2026 guest felt the driver drove too fast in the rain.
Go Tours Costa Rica: Volcano, Waterfalls, Zipline and Hot Springs
$185, ages 5 to 80 · 4.8 from 152 reviews · 14 hrs · daily, 06:30 pickup
Not a zipline near San José so much as a long day to Arenal with a zipline in it: a coffee stop, the La Paz waterfall, bird and iguana viewing points, a zipline course with a 50 m rappel, lunch, the hot springs at the base of the volcano and dinner on the way back. Guests praise the guides, who stop for sloths on the road, and many call it the highlight of a short trip.
Expect more time in the van than out of it: guests describe 06:50 to 21:00 days, and one older review estimated nine to ten of 14 hours on the road. You can be dropped in La Fortuna instead of returning, which makes it a scenic transfer. The price rises to $189 on 1 December 2026.
Ziplining is better further from the city: if your trip continues to Arenal, Monteverde or the Pacific coast, the courses there are longer and higher. Book near San José when you only have a morning, or as a first taste before the big ones.
Where the Ziplines Near San José Are
The map shows how far each course is from the city. Only La Carpintera is genuinely on San José's doorstep; the rest are a drive of one to two hours.
| Course | From downtown San José | From SJO airport | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| La Carpintera | 14 km, about 35 to 40 min | 34 km, about 1 hr 10 min | Car, taxi or Uber ("La Carpintera Canopy Tour") |
| Rainforest Adventures, Braulio Carrillo | 46 km, about 1 hr | 56 km, about 1 hr 45 min | Car on Route 32, or transport on request |
| Explornatura, near Turrialba | 57 km, about 1 hr 50 min | 76 km, about 2 hrs 25 min | Car; best combined with a night in Turrialba |
| Vista Los Sueños, near Herradura | 93 km, about 2 hrs | 78 km, about 1 hr 50 min | Included hotel pickup from San José |
Drive times are our calculation from Mapbox routes without traffic. La Carpintera's own listing puts it at 20 minutes and 11 km, which is realistic only outside rush hour; Rainforest Adventures says 45 minutes. Allow longer on weekday afternoons in the Central Valley, and on Route 32 after heavy rain.
How Much Does a Zipline Near San José Cost?
A zipline near San José costs $51.29 to $78 per adult at the two closest courses, $114 for canyoning with lunch near Turrialba, and $171.30 to $185 for a day trip that includes a zipline, transport and meals. On the closer courses, transport is the hidden cost: you get there yourself, or pay for a transfer.
La Carpintera for two, plus a taxi or Uber each way to Tres Ríos.
Rainforest Adventures' zipline with lunch at $95 each, or $344 for the full park day with transport from San José.
La Carpintera with two children at $43.08. Rainforest Adventures' zipline costs $266 for the same family, but its minimum height is 120 cm.
Age limits differ: La Carpintera takes children from 6, Rainforest Adventures and Go Tours from 5, Explornatura from 7 and Vista Los Sueños from 12. La Carpintera's listing stops at 75.
Our Take
Across these listings, the closer the course, the more of the effort is yours: La Carpintera is cheap and close but makes you climb and get there yourself, while the further parks cost more and take longer but carry you most of the way. Pick by how much of your day you want to spend on the road.
Tips for Ziplining Near San José
- Book the morning slot in the green season. Afternoon rain is common from May to November; guests at both close courses recommend a raincoat.
- Wear closed shoes with grip. The La Carpintera stairs and the Turrialba waterfalls are slippery when wet, and one canyoning guest struggled on rappels in sandals.
- Brake gently. On courses where you slow yourself with an arm on the line, ease on rather than pulling hard; one guest strained an arm doing that on fast lines.
- Save the meeting point before the day. La Carpintera is listed in Waze, Google Maps and Uber as "Canopy La Carpintera"; save the operator's number too.
- Book Braulio Carrillo with transport if you have no car. One guest found taxis back from the park hard to get and expensive.
- Check the health notes. The listings advise against ziplining with back injuries, heart conditions, pregnancy or recent surgery, and La Carpintera adds osteoporosis.
- Heading out of the city? Our Monteverde zipline guide, Jacó zipline guide and Costa Rica tours from San José guide cover the bigger courses and day trips, and our best things to do in San José guide covers the rest of the capital.
- Where to stay? Our best hotels in San José guide ranks the downtown, Escazú and La Sabana options, and our hotels near San José airport guide covers the airport side.

How We Selected These Tours
The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every zipline and canopy tour sold from San José and checked each listing live on 5 November 2026: price by age and option, start times, inclusions, transport, weight and height limits, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. Drive times are our calculation from Mapbox routes. We required a guest review in the last six months. We left out a bungee and canopy park near San José with no review since January 2026, three Braulio Carrillo and Central Valley tours with only one or two reviews in the past year, and several day trips with one review or none. We also left out a second Vista Los Sueños day trip sold by another company for $218, the same park as the one above, and a Central Valley zipline sold by a different company at $70 whose listing and reviews match La Carpintera's course closely, so we could not be sure it is a different zipline. We then read 317 reviews of the six tours, plus 19 of the Central Valley listing we left out, the most recent of each plus the latest one- to three-star reviews, looking at how hard the courses really are, how long the days ran and what guests wished they had known.
