Seven private tours from Jacó compared, from your own speedboat to Tortuga Island and a private guide in Carara to birding, food and a full-day ATV ride, plus two more listed as private to confirm, with what private really means and how the price changes with group size.
What to Know Before Booking a Private Tour in Jacó
- A private tour in Jacó means your group only, with its own guide, captain or instructor, usually with pickup in town; most run two to eight and a half hours.
- Most private tours are priced per person with a group minimum, so the price per head falls as your group grows; one full-day catamaran charter is priced per boat for up to 10 people.
- Prices run from $65 to $85 per person for a private Carara guide and $101.54 for private birding to $155 to $200 each for a private Tortuga Island speedboat and about $2,987 for a full-day catamaran charter.
- Check the group minimum before you book: the Tortuga speedboat needs five people, the catamaran four and the food walk three, so couples pay for the missing seats or choose another tour.
Private Tours in Jacó: What You're Booking
A Jacó private tour gives your group its own guide, boat or instructor for the day, instead of sharing a van or a catamaran with strangers. In Jacó that covers most of what the town is known for: a speedboat to Tortuga Island, a catamaran to the hidden cove of Playa Fantasia, a naturalist guide in Carara National Park, a birding morning, a surf lesson, a full day on an ATV, a walking food tour and a night walk in the forest. This is where private tours differ: some are private by design and priced for small groups, while others are listed as private but price per person, so it pays to check the minimum group size and what the price covers.
What "private" means here. Every tour below is listed by its operator as private, but a large booking limit doesn't prove you'll have the guide or boat to yourselves, so we checked the reviews. On seven tours, guests describe their own boat, guide or ride. On the surf lessons, some guests describe semi-private lessons with a shared instructor, and on the night walk no review confirms a private group, so we list those two separately as tours to confirm when you book.

Subwing Costa Rica: Private Tortuga Island Speedboat
The most complete private day out from Jacó: your own speedboat and captain to Tortuga Island, with pickup, breakfast, lunch, drinks, snorkeling and Subwings, and 81 of 85 reviews at five stars. For a group of eight or more it costs about the same per person as the shared catamarans.

Private tours in Jacó follow a similar pattern, whatever the activity.
Our take (when private is worth it): Private tours pay off most for groups of five or more, where the price per person drops close to the shared tours, and for anyone who wants to set the pace: families with young children or grandparents, keen birders and photographers. For a couple, a shared tour usually gives you the same sights for less.
Every Jacó Private Tour, Reviewed
First the seven tours where guests confirm their own boat, guide or ride, then the two listed as private that you should confirm. Prices are per person unless noted.
Subwing Costa Rica: Private Tortuga Speedboat
$200 each for 5 or 6, falling to $155 each for 10 · 5.0 from 85 reviews · 8.5 hrs
Your own speedboat for the day, with pickup in Jacó at 07:15, homemade breakfast, a hot lunch on Tortuga Island and drinks. Guests tow behind the boat on Subwings, watch spider monkeys on the rocks, and describe reaching the snorkel spots before the big catamarans arrive. Families with teenagers and grandparents describe a day paced around them.
We'd choose it over the shared catamaran for any group of eight or more, because the price per person is about the same. The tradeoffs are a wetter, bumpier ride than a big boat and a five-person minimum. One guest describes feeding the monkeys and fish, which Costa Rica's wildlife law prohibits without authorization, so ask the crew not to. Our Tortuga Island tour from Jacó guide compares it with the shared trips.
JungleXpeditions: Private Carara Tour
$85 each for 2 or 3, down to $65 each for 7 to 12 · 4.9 from 40 reviews · 4 hrs
A naturalist guide collects you from your hotel in Jacó, Herradura, Tárcoles or Playa Hermosa and walks Carara National Park at your pace, with the park ticket and water included. Guests describe more than 25 bird species, three kinds of monkey and a guide who went looking for macaws after the park.
It is the private tour we'd book for two, because there's no group minimum beyond two adults. Take the 07:30 start: the only poor review came from a 12:30 group that saw little.
Sergio Birdwatching: Private Birding Morning
$101.54 each · 5.0 from 74 reviews, every one five stars · from 06:30
A private morning with a local birder who picks you up and drives to several sites around Jacó for the species on your list, with a scope for photos through your phone. Guests describe dozens of species, one counted 33 in three hours, and mornings that ran past the three hours listed.
We'd book it if birds or bird photography are the point; it costs more than a Carara walk but isn't tied to one park.
Taste of Jaco: TICO Private Walking Food Tour
$107 each, priced for 3 · 4.9 from 18 reviews · 3 to 4 hrs
A private walk through Jacó with four sit-down stops: caldosa, patacones, a Tico tortilla with coffee and chifrijo at a beachside restaurant. Families and a group of 14 describe big portions and a guide focused on them.
A couple still pays for three, so for two people we'd book the shared Taste of Costa Rica walk instead, compared in our Jacó food tour guide.
ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: The King's Full-Day ATV
$199, $54 ages 5 to 15 · 4.9 from 109 reviews · 6 to 7 hrs
A full day on ATVs through rainforest trails, villages and rivers to a waterfall you can swim in, with lunch and pickup in Jacó on request. Recent guests describe monkeys, toucans and butterflies, and one family with daughters aged 6 and 8 loved it.
Several reviews from 2022 to 2024 say the company never groups you with others; one 2018 guest was put in a larger group. It has only three reviews in the past year, and one recent guest found it simply too long and suggested a shorter ride. Our Jacó ATV tour guide compares the shorter options.
VIP Boat Cruise CR: Private Catamaran
$95 each, 4 minimum · 4.7 from 38 reviews · 4 hrs
A small catamaran just for your group from Herradura Beach, with snorkeling, fishing gear and fruit, and a stop at Playa Fantasia that several guests had to themselves.
We'd only book it knowing what it is: an older boat that recent guests say runs on the motor because the sail is damaged, with simple snacks. The fishing is trolling with catch and release, the snorkel gear is basic and the water is sometimes too murky to snorkel, so bring your own mask if it matters, and water shoes for the rocky beach landing. Two families saw humpback whales on the way, one with children aged 2 and 4. One guest in March 2026 reported a no-show.
Sealounge Catamaran: Full-Day Playa Fantasia Charter
$2,986.67 per boat for up to 10 · 4.8 from 20 reviews · 7 hrs
A 50-foot catamaran for your group alone, with hotel pickup, breakfast, lunch, an open bar and snorkeling at Playa Fantasia, a cove reached only by sea. Guests hosting a retreat and a multi-generation family describe the beach all to themselves, with a banana boat and volleyball, and a crew that helped older parents on and off the boat.
At about $299 per person for ten, it is the top end here; bring your own towels.
The Surfer Factory: Surf Lessons
$49, $50 ages 5 to 11 · 5.0 from 510 reviews · 2 hrs
A two-hour surf lesson on Jacó Beach with the board included; guests describe getting up on their first tries, a family of five children aged 8 to 18 learning together, and a photographer whose photos and drone footage many say are worth paying extra for. One guest recommends the 06:00 lesson for calm morning water.
Guests describe both private and semi-private lessons, so confirm which you are booking: on a shared lesson one instructor alternates between students, and one guest's lesson ran about an hour and a quarter. Agree the meeting point in advance, too: two guests in 2026 had trouble finding out where to meet.
Geriold's Experiences: Night Walk
$70, $65 ages 6 to 17 · 4.9 from 47 reviews · 3.5 hrs · daily at 17:30
An evening walk of about 1.5 km up a shallow forest river near Jacó, in boots and with professional flashlights, looking for frogs, snakes, owls and scorpions, with a swim in the pools and dinner afterwards according to guests.
The listing marks it private, but no review we read confirms a private group, so ask when you book. Our Jacó wildlife tours guide compares it with the other ways to see animals near town.
Arriving from San José? Several operators in Jacó also run private airport transfers; book them separately from these tours.
How Much Does a Private Tour in Jacó Cost?
Private tours in Jacó cost from $49 per person for a surf lesson to $200 per person for a Tortuga Island speedboat, and about $2,987 for a full-day catamaran charter. What matters more than the headline price is how many of you there are: most private tours charge per person with a minimum, and several get cheaper per head as the group grows.
A surf lesson for two ($98), the private Carara tour ($170) or a private birding morning ($203.08).
The private catamaran ($475) or Subwing's private Tortuga speedboat ($1,000).
Subwing's Tortuga speedboat at $155 each ($1,550) or Sealounge's full-day Playa Fantasia charter ($2,986.67).
Bring cash for tips: they are not included on most of these tours.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing is that guests on private tours rate the person more than the activity: the reviews that glow describe a captain or guide who adapted the day to their group, while many of the complaints are about communication before the tour, such as a late reply or an unclear meeting point.
Tips for Booking a Private Tour in Jacó
- Check the group minimum. The Tortuga speedboat needs five people, the catamaran four and the food walk three; smaller groups pay for the empty seats.
- Confirm what "private" covers. For surf lessons especially, ask whether you are booking a private or semi-private lesson.
- Agree the meeting point a day ahead. Most operators confirm by WhatsApp; if you have not heard by the evening before, message them.
- Go early. Wildlife, birding and surf tours all do best in the first hours after dawn.
- Bring cash for tips and photos. Several guides offer photo packages or drone footage at extra cost.
- Want the shared versions? Our Carara National Park tour guide, Jacó boat tours guide and Jacó wildlife tours guide compare the group tours.
- Planning the rest of your trip? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge.
How We Selected These Tours
The Costa Rica Day Trip team checked every well-reviewed tour listed in Jacó for whether it runs as a private tour, then checked each private listing live on 20 October 2026: price by group size, start times, ages, inclusions, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We required a guest review in the last six months and enough reviews to judge each tour. We left out private airport transfers, which are a different booking, a spa massage, a monkey tour where guests describe feeding wild monkeys, an older Carara tour with no recent reviews, and a full-day adventure pass where one family was joined by another group and recent guests describe ATV burns and a zipline brake failing. We then read the most recent reviews of each tour, plus their one- to three-star reviews, and searched them for whether guests really had the guide, boat or instructor to themselves. Seven tours passed; the surf lesson (semi-private lessons described) and the night walk (no review confirms a private group) are listed separately.
