Manuel Antonio is quietly one of Costa Rica's most romantic bases: a sunset catamaran sail with open bar, wildlife walks in the national park, waterfall swims, and dinners over the marina. Here are the best things to do in Manuel Antonio for couples, from the $95 sunset sail to free beach sunsets.

What You Should Know

 • Manuel Antonio is a natural fit for couples: a sunset catamaran sail with open bar, wildlife walks in the national park, and dinners over the marina are the area's whole identity, and almost everything sits within 30 minutes so evenings stay unhurried.
 • The romance splits into two moods: soft (a sunset sail, a slow park walk, a mangrove float, a waterfall swim) and shared-adrenaline (ziplining, ATV through the rainforest) for couples who bond over adventure. Most pairs do one of each and keep at least one sunset for the water.
 • Romantic activities start from about $49 for a guided park walk and run to $155 for the Nauyaca Waterfall half day. Private guides and small-group tours cost more but are worth it for a special trip.
 • Timing makes the difference. The park is quietest and the wildlife most active right at the 7 AM opening, and the afternoon sunset sail from 2:00 to 5:30 PM lands you on deck for golden hour and the swim at Biesanz Bay.

Best Things to Do in Manuel Antonio for Couples

Manuel Antonio for couples is built around the water and the wildlife. The best things to do in Manuel Antonio for couples start with a sunset catamaran sail: an afternoon on deck with an open bar and a gourmet lunch, a snorkel stop at Biesanz Bay, and the Pacific turning gold as you come back to Quepos. Around that, the area stacks up naturally romantic days: a slow morning walk through the national park with monkeys and sloths overhead, a swim at the base of a rainforest waterfall, a quiet mangrove float, and a candlelit dinner over the marina.

Because almost everything is within 30 minutes of town, you are not spending your evenings driving. That is what makes it work for a honeymoon or an anniversary: you can hike or zipline in the morning and still be on a boat for sunset. This guide picks the most romantic things to do, with the top-rated option for each and a two-day plan to string them together. For the full list, see our things to do in Manuel Antonio guide.

The Short Answer

For most couples, the essential three are a sunset catamaran sail, a slow national park morning, and one thing you do together that you would not do at home, whether that is a waterfall day, a zipline canopy, or an ATV run through the rainforest. For a slower romantic pace, our horseback riding guide and night tour guide both make easy evening add-ons, and if you are planning around family or older travelers, see our companion guides to the best things to do in Manuel Antonio for families and for seniors.

Sun, sea, and super service

There are plenty of cruise options in the Manuel Antonio area, but this crew stood out for wanting to give guests an interesting, fun and engaging experience. Pickup from our hotel was easy, and check-in and boarding were friendly and simple. Once on board we were served drinks throughout by the lovely crew. Kevin and Minor were excellent and genuinely proud of their culture and work. We saw dolphins and enjoyed the option to snorkel and swim in the Pacific. The food was delicious, fresh fish with the chef's own homemade hot sauce as a nice touch, and we watched the sunset from the boat, which was perfect. If we ever came back, this would be one of the first tours we would book.

Sunset sail was great

We traveled in July. Even though it is the rainy season we had beautiful weather. The water was pretty but not the clearest, and we saw several kinds of fish while my husband spotted a small sea turtle. The crew was great with wonderful hospitality. Our tour director, Minor, was super friendly and upbeat but serious when it came to safety. We had a great lunch on the boat on the way back to the dock.

We had an absolute blast

We had an absolute blast on this trip. The boat was super nice and not crowded at all, the staff were awesome, and lunch was delicious. The views were incredible and it was amazing having unlimited drinks. It was fun to snorkel and get in the water, and just an amazing experience overall. Would definitely recommend if you are stopping in Quepos.

Best early · Easy

A Slow National Park Morning

A gentle way to start a day together: a two-hour guided walk with a naturalist finding sloths, monkeys, and toucans for you through a spotting scope, on mostly flat paved trails. Go right at the 7 AM opening and the trails are quietest and the wildlife most active, from $49. Our national park tour guide has the timing.

4
Shared adventure

How Long Each Experience Takes

So you can plan the day around a sunset together, here is roughly how long each takes door to door:

ExperienceTime (with transport)
National park nature walk~2 hrs
Mangrove boat tour~3 hrs (4 hrs w/ transport)
Sunset sailing & snorkeling~3.5–4 hrs
Canopy ziplineHalf day
ATV rainforest & waterfallsHalf day
Nauyaca WaterfallHalf day

The pattern that suits couples: a shorter morning activity like the park walk or a mangrove float, the afternoon free, and the sunset sail to close the day. The park walk and a mangrove float also pair neatly into a single relaxed day.

A Romantic 2 to 3 Day Manuel Antonio Itinerary

Built around unhurried afternoons: something memorable by day, and a sunset for the water.

Day 1

 • Morning: A national park nature walk, right at the 7 AM opening. The trails are quietest and the wildlife most active early, and a naturalist finds sloths and monkeys for you.
 • Afternoon: The sunset catamaran sail from 2:00 to 5:30 PM, with an open bar, lunch on board, and a snorkel stop at Biesanz Bay as the Pacific turns gold.
 • Evening: A slow dinner over the Quepos marina to close the day.

Day 2

 • Morning: The Nauyaca Waterfall half-day tour, mixing hiking and horseback riding to a towering fall with a swim at the base.
 • Afternoon: A quiet mangrove float through Damas Island, seated and unhurried, or time on the beach.
 • Evening: A free sunset from Playa Espadilla or Biesanz Bay, then a candlelit dinner in town.

Day 3 (if you have it)

 • Morning: Something you would not do at home together: the canopy zipline side by side, or an off-road ATV run through the rainforest.
 • Afternoon and evening: A final loose afternoon on the beach, and a last sunset to close the trip.

Two nights covers the essentials with room to breathe; a third adds one shared adventure without rushing. The one rule we would keep: leave at least one afternoon for the sunset sail, not a second tour.

Free Romantic Things to Do in Manuel Antonio

 • Sunset at Playa Espadilla: The main beach faces west, so it is a front-row seat for the sunset every clear evening. Bring a drink, find a spot on the sand, and it costs nothing.
 • Biesanz Bay at low tide: A small, sheltered cove tucked below the hotels, calm and quiet, lovely for a swim and a slow afternoon together away from the crowds.
 • The national park beaches: Once you are inside the park, Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur are among the prettiest beaches in the country, with monkeys in the trees behind you.
 • Dinner over the marina in Quepos: The marina and the road up to Manuel Antonio have a warm, low-key restaurant scene. A candlelit dinner at a local spot costs a fraction of a resort and often has more character and a better view.

From Our Experience

We've found couples get the most out of Manuel Antonio by protecting the afternoons. Do the memorable thing in the morning while it is cool and quiet, keep the middle of the day loose, and aim to be on the water or the beach for sunset. On the sunset sail, we noticed the open bar and the golden light on the return leg are what pairs remember, so book the afternoon departure, not the morning one.

Tips for Manuel Antonio as a Couple

 • Book the afternoon sail: The 2:00 to 5:30 PM catamaran departure is the romantic one, timed for golden hour and the swim at Biesanz Bay. The morning departure is fine but misses the sunset.
 • Do the park at opening: The national park is quietest and the wildlife most active right at the 7 AM opening. Go early and the trails feel like your own; by midday it is hot and busy.
 • Book a private or small-group upgrade: Many guides and the sail offer private options. For a honeymoon or anniversary, the difference in atmosphere is real.
 • Keep an afternoon free for the water: One activity by day and the sunset sail or a beach evening beats two tours. The point of Manuel Antonio as a couple is the unhurried afternoon.
 • Travel in the dry season if you can: December to April brings the clearest skies and the best sunsets, which is what you want for the sail. The green season is quieter and cheaper, with afternoon showers.
 • Pack for both moods: Grippy shoes and a rain layer for the trails and the waterfall, swimwear for the sail and the beaches, and something nicer for a marina dinner. Manuel Antonio is casual, but a good dinner deserves it.

How We Chose These Romantic Activities

The Costa Rica Day Trip team ranked these activities for couples using the tours currently bookable in and around Manuel Antonio, weighing star ratings, review volume, price, atmosphere, and how well each experience suits two people rather than a group. Where an activity has its own dedicated guide on this site, the tour listed here is the top-rated option from that comparison, chosen for romance rather than family or budget fit. Prices, ratings, and review counts were reviewed in July 2026 and reflect per-person from-rates at that time. Pricing and inclusions change seasonally, so confirm current details before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Manuel Antonio good for couples?+

Yes, it is one of the most romantic bases in Costa Rica. A sunset catamaran sail with an open bar, wildlife walks in the national park, waterfall swims, and dinners over the marina are the area's identity, and almost everything is within 30 minutes so evenings stay unhurried. It works especially well for honeymoons and anniversaries, since you can be active by day and still be on a boat for sunset.

What are the most romantic things to do in Manuel Antonio?+

The afternoon sunset catamaran sail is the standout: open bar, gourmet lunch on board, a snorkel stop at Biesanz Bay, and golden light on the way back, from $95. Add a slow national park morning with a naturalist from $49, a swim at the Nauyaca Waterfall from $155, and a free sunset from Playa Espadilla. Leaving at least one afternoon for the water is what makes the trip feel romantic.

What is the best romantic tour in Manuel Antonio?+

The Manuel Antonio sailing and snorkeling tour with lunch and open bar, from $95, rated 4.7 across more than 600 reviews. Book the afternoon departure, which runs 2:00 to 5:30 PM, so you are on deck for golden hour with an open bar and a snorkel stop in calm Biesanz Bay. Hotel pickup is included, so you just show up.

Is Manuel Antonio good for a honeymoon?+

It is one of Costa Rica's best honeymoon stops. The combination of a sunset sail, an easy national park full of wildlife, waterfall swims, and short drives means you can do something memorable each day without long transfers eating your afternoons. Many activities offer private or small-group upgrades, and pairing Manuel Antonio with a hot springs base like La Fortuna makes a classic honeymoon itinerary.

What is the best time of day for couples in Manuel Antonio?+

Early morning and late afternoon. The national park is quietest and the wildlife most active right at the 7 AM opening, and the afternoon sunset sail from 2:00 to 5:30 PM puts you on the water for golden hour. The middle of the day is the hottest and busiest, so it is the part to keep loose, ideally on a beach.

How many days do couples need in Manuel Antonio?+

Two to three nights. One day covers a national park morning and the sunset catamaran sail. A second adds the Nauyaca Waterfall or a mangrove float and a free beach sunset. A third makes room for a shared adventure like the canopy zipline or an ATV run. Keeping at least one afternoon for the water rather than a second tour is what makes it feel like a romantic trip rather than a busy one.

What is the best season to visit Manuel Antonio as a couple?+

The dry season, roughly December to April, brings the clearest skies and the best sunsets, which is what you want for the sail. It is the busiest and priciest time, so book the sunset sail ahead. The green season from May to November is quieter and cheaper, with warm afternoons and short showers, and the rainforest is at its lushest.

Do romantic things to do in Manuel Antonio run when it rains?+

Yes, most do. The national park walk, the mangrove float, the ATV run, and the waterfall tour all operate in wet weather, and the rainforest is at its best after a shower. The sunset sail is the weather-dependent one, since it needs reasonable conditions on the water, so if showers are forecast, aim for a drier afternoon or keep the day flexible.
