March is the month the La Fortuna dry season actually peaks. December and January get the reputation, but the rainfall numbers are blunt about it: March averages around 75mm against January's 150mm and October's 375mm. In our view that makes March the most reliable month of the year for anyone whose trip depends on being outdoors, whether that means the volcano trails, the waterfall staircase, or a full day on an ATV.

The price you pay is heat and company. At 31°C (88°F) March is the warmest of the dry months, and midday on an exposed lava trail is genuinely hot. Crowds stay firmly at high-season levels, and in years when Holy Week lands in late March the final week fills with domestic travellers. Temperature and Humidity

March runs hotter than the months either side of it. Days average 31°C (88°F), two degrees above January, and with the sun out for more of the day the felt temperature on an open trail climbs higher than the number suggests. Humidity is at its yearly low, which helps a great deal, so the heat is a dry, manageable warmth rather than the heavy closeness of August. Nights still settle to around 21°C (71°F), so evenings on a hotel terrace remain comfortable. UV is very high, and in the sunniest month of the year that matters more than usual: sunscreen, a hat, and more water than you think you need.

Rain Pattern

At roughly 75mm for the whole month, March is as dry as La Fortuna gets. That is still not zero, and it never will be here, because the town sits on the Caribbean-facing slope where trade winds keep pushing moisture against the mountains all year. What you get in March is the mildest version of that: an occasional brief shower, some overnight drizzle, and long stretches of days where nothing falls at all. Most guests find that rain simply stops being a planning factor this month, which is not something we would say about any other part of the calendar.

Volcano Visibility and Trail Conditions

Arenal makes its own weather, and March gives it the least to work with. Clear cones are the rule rather than the exception, particularly from sunrise through mid-morning before daytime heating builds the summit cloud cap, and the volcano frequently reappears near sunset. The biggest difference between March and the green season is on the ground: the lava-field trails, the waterfall steps, and the bridge decks are all dry and grippy, which removes the single most common complaint about hiking here. Our take: if anyone in your group is nervous on wet footing, March is the month to bring them.

March does not have January's two-speed shape. It is busy from start to finish, with one possible exception at the end of the month.

• March 1 to 20 (steady dry-season peak): consistently busy without feeling overwhelmed. Tours run at capacity but availability is usually fine a day or two ahead, and mid-range hotels sit around $130 to $190 a night.
• Second Sunday of March (Día del Boyero): a national celebration of Costa Rica's oxcart drivers. It adds domestic weekend travel rather than a rush, but the towns hosting parades get lively.
• Late March (Semana Santa in some years): Holy Week shifts annually. When it lands in March, that week becomes the biggest domestic travel period of the year: hotels fill, roads are heavy, and some businesses close Thursday and Friday. Easter 2026 falls on April 5, so March 2026 escapes it entirely.

The practical picture is that March costs less than January while offering better weather, which is one of the calendar's better trades. What typically happens is that visitors who care mainly about hiking and views get more for their money in March, while those chasing quiet or bargains are simply in the wrong month. Arenal's cone is why most people come to La Fortuna, and it is also the region's most weather-dependent sight. Through the wet months the summit can hide for days at a stretch. In March, with the least atmospheric moisture of the year to work with, clear mornings arrive with something close to reliability.

The daily rhythm is worth planning around. Skies are at their cleanest from sunrise to mid-morning. As the day heats up, cloud builds around the peak and the summit is often veiled by mid-afternoon, then frequently clears again toward sunset. We'd book this if you want the postcard shot: an early breakfast, on the trail by 7 AM, and the cone in full view before the heat sets in.

The strongest vantage points are Mirador El Silencio and the 1968 lava-flow trails on the western flank, which look straight up at the cone, plus the open sections of the hanging bridges circuits. All three are at their best underfoot in March. One honest note: Arenal has been in a resting phase since 2010, so there is no visible lava at night in any month. About 75mm across the month, the lowest figure on La Fortuna's calendar and roughly a fifth of what falls in October. That is genuinely dry by the standards of a Caribbean-slope rainforest town, but it is not the same as no rain. Trade winds keep working against the mountains year-round, and March simply gets the weakest version of that effect.

In practice the rain that does fall is brief and often overnight. Tours essentially never cancel for weather this month, trails drain within minutes, and afternoon plans hold. The realistic March risk is not rain at all, it is heat and sun exposure on open trails at midday, which is a different problem with a different solution.

Two practical consequences follow. First, still carry a light rain shell, because 75mm is not zero and a shower on the bridges is perfectly possible. Second, restructure your day around the sun rather than the sky: hike and explore in the morning, then move to hot springs, a coffee tour, or a cooking class for the hottest hours of the afternoon.

The single most useful thing to understand about La Fortuna's climate is that temperature barely moves all year, while rainfall swings roughly fivefold. Daytime highs sit between 29 and 32°C every month and nights hover around 21°C, so you pack the same clothes in January as in July. What actually changes your trip is how much rain falls, and when.

The temperature column is almost a flat line, and that is the point. Most people don't realize that choosing when to visit La Fortuna is a decision about rain and cloud, not about heat. If you want thundering waterfalls, fuller rivers, and lower rates, the green season delivers, and you accept afternoon rain as the price.

March is light on festivals but carries one national tradition and one moving date worth knowing.

• Día del Boyero (second Sunday of March): Costa Rica's oxcart driver day, honouring the painted carretas that once carried coffee to the coast. The main parades happen elsewhere, most famously in Escazú, but the day brings domestic weekend travel and a general festive mood across the country.

Only Semana Santa should genuinely influence your planning, and only in the years it lands before April.

• Start at sunrise, not mid-morning. You get the clearest volcano views and you finish the exposed sections before the heat peaks. This is the single highest-value March habit.

• Still carry a light shell. Seventy-five millimetres is the driest month, not a dry month. A brief shower on the bridges is perfectly possible.
• Book hotels and headline tours ahead. Crowds stay at high-season levels all month, and the most-reviewed tours fill days out.
• Use the afternoons for shade and water. Hot springs, coffee tours, cooking classes and butterfly gardens all work beautifully in the hottest hours.
• Adjust your waterfall expectations. The staircase is at its safest and the pool at its clearest, but the flow is the lowest of the year. It is a swimming month more than a spectacle month.
• Expect dust on ATV and horseback trails. The mud is gone, which is the point, but a buff or bandana is worth packing.
• Give the volcano one early morning and you will probably not need a second. March odds are the best on the calendar.
