April is the last reliably dry month of the La Fortuna year, and on paper it is the best weather month of all: around 70mm of rain, the lowest total on the calendar, with hot days near 31°C (88°F) and trails that are as firm as they ever get. In our view the weather story is only half of it. What really shapes an April trip is Semana Santa, Holy Week, which turns one week of the month into the busiest domestic travel period in Costa Rica and leaves the rest of April unusually relaxed.

We'd book April if you want dry-season conditions without paying January prices, and if you can land your dates outside Holy Week. The tradeoff is that this is the end of the dry stretch: rivers and the waterfall run at their lowest volume of the year, the landscape is at its least lush, and afternoon heat builds cloud around the volcano earlier in the day than it does mid dry season. Temperature and Humidity

April is the hottest month in La Fortuna, with daytime highs around 31°C (88°F). That is only two degrees above January, but it feels like more because the trade winds that cool the dry-season mornings have eased off by now. Nights still fall to about 21°C (71°F), which keeps sleeping comfortable and makes an early start genuinely pleasant. Humidity climbs through the second half of the month as the atmosphere begins its slow turn toward the green season. UV is very high year-round this close to the equator, so sun protection matters on the bridges and at the waterfall even when cloud is around.

Rain Pattern

At roughly 70mm, April records the least rain of any month in La Fortuna, edging out March. That still is not zero. La Fortuna sits on the Caribbean slope of the mountains, where trade winds push moisture against the highlands all year, so even the driest month produces occasional showers. What changes is duration: April rain is typically a brief afternoon shower or an overnight spell that has cleared by breakfast, rather than the long soaking downpours of September and October. Toward the very end of the month you may notice the first proper afternoon build-ups as May approaches.

Volcano Visibility and Trail Conditions

April gives you very good odds on the volcano, just fractionally short of the January and February peak. The cone is clear far more often than not, especially early. The biggest difference is that April's stronger daytime heating builds the cloud cap around the summit sooner, so the clear window closes earlier in the day than it does mid dry season. On the ground, conditions could not be better: the 1968 lava-field trails, the waterfall staircase, and the hanging-bridge circuits are all at their firmest and least slippery of the entire year, which makes April the easiest month for hiking with children or anyone unsure on wet footing.

April is a month of two halves, and the dividing line is Semana Santa. Get your dates on the right side of it and the same weather costs meaningfully less.

• Early April, up to and including Semana Santa: Holy Week is the single biggest domestic travel week in Costa Rica. Costa Rican families head for the beaches and the mountains together, La Fortuna hotels fill, tours book out days ahead, and roads toward the coast get genuinely congested. Many businesses, including some restaurants and offices, close on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Rates hold at high-season levels, roughly $130 to $180 a night mid-range.
• The week immediately after Holy Week: the drop is fast and obvious. Domestic travelers return to work and school, international dry-season traffic is winding down, and the town becomes noticeably quieter almost overnight.
• Late April: one of the best value windows of the year. Weather is still largely dry, volcano views remain very good, and mid-range rooms typically fall to around $110 to $150. Tour availability is easy, often same-day.

Our take: late April is quietly one of the smartest times to visit La Fortuna. You are trading a small amount of weather reliability at the very end of the month for a substantial drop in both price and company, and you still get firm trails and a volcano that shows itself most mornings. Note that Semana Santa moves year to year because Easter is a moveable feast, so confirm the exact dates for your travel year rather than assuming the first week of April.

Arenal's near-perfect cone is why most people come to La Fortuna, and April delivers it reliably. Clear mornings are the norm rather than the exception, and across a three or four night stay you should expect at least one or two genuinely open views of the summit. We'd give this the edge for anyone who wants dry-season visibility without January's peak pricing.

The rhythm is worth planning around. Skies are cleanest between sunrise and mid-morning. Because April is the hottest month, daytime heating builds cloud around the peak a little earlier than in January or February, so the reliable window is shorter: think sunrise to around 9 or 10 AM rather than lingering into late morning. The summit often clears again near sunset, which makes an evening viewpoint stop a worthwhile second attempt. Most guests find that two early starts turn a likely view into an almost certain one.

The best vantage points are Mirador El Silencio and the 1968 lava-flow trails on the volcano's western flank, both looking straight up at the cone, plus the open stretches on the hanging bridges circuits. Two practical consequences. First, the low rainfall shows up in the rivers. The La Fortuna Waterfall runs at its lowest volume of the year in April, clear and photogenic but far less thunderous than in the wet months, and rafting is at its gentlest. Second, still pack a light rain jacket and quick-dry layers. We think the tradeoff is worth it either way, but go in knowing that April buys you dryness at the cost of drama.

The single most useful thing to understand about La Fortuna's climate is that temperature barely moves all year, while rainfall swings roughly fivefold. Daytime highs sit between 29 and 32°C every month and nights hover around 21°C, so you pack the same clothes in January as in July. What actually changes your trip is how much rain falls, and when.

April is the most eventful month in the Costa Rican calendar, and one week of it will shape your trip more than the weather does.

• Semana Santa (Holy Week): the week leading up to Easter Sunday, and the biggest domestic travel week of the year. Costa Rican families take the week off and travel en masse, so La Fortuna hotels fill, tours book out, and roads are busy. Many businesses, banks and some restaurants close on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, and alcohol sales are restricted in some places. Expect religious processions through La Fortuna's central park. The dates shift every year because Easter is a moveable feast; Easter Sunday falls on April 5 in 2026, so Holy Week runs the week before.
• Juan Santamaría Day (April 11): a national holiday commemorating Costa Rica's national hero, with the biggest celebrations in Alajuela. It is a public holiday nationwide, so expect some closures and a long weekend if it falls near one, but it has limited direct effect on tour operations in La Fortuna.
• End of the school and dry-season cycle: after Holy Week, domestic travel drops away sharply and international dry-season traffic winds down, which is exactly what creates late April's value window.
