Seven wildlife tours from Jacó compared, from Carara National Park and the Tárcoles crocodile boats to a night walk, a private birding morning and a day in Manuel Antonio, with which tours let guests feed the animals and which don't.

What to Know Before Booking a Jacó Wildlife Tour

  • The best wildlife near Jacó is 20 to 30 minutes north: scarlet macaws and monkeys in Carara National Park and crocodiles on the Tárcoles River. Manuel Antonio is a full day, about two hours each way.
  • Mornings are best for birds and monkeys; most tours leave between 06:30 and 08:30. The night walk starts at 17:30 for frogs, snakes and other animals you won't see by day.
  • Tours cost $40 to $135 per adult: $40 for a crocodile boat, $45 for a guided Carara walk, $70 for the night walk and $135 for a Manuel Antonio day with meals.
  • On two popular monkey tours, guests describe hand-feeding wild capuchins, which Costa Rica's wildlife law fines without SINAC authorization. To watch animals rather than feed them, check the Wildlife contact column below.

Wildlife Tours in Jacó: What You're Booking

A Jacó wildlife tour takes you to the forests, rivers and mangroves around town to find the animals Costa Rica's Central Pacific is known for: scarlet macaws, American crocodiles, capuchin, howler and spider monkeys, sloths, toucans, and at night, frogs, snakes and owls. Jacó itself is a beach town, so almost every tour drives you somewhere: Carara National Park and the Tárcoles River, 20 to 30 minutes north; the hills around town for birding and night walks; a mangrove estuary about an hour away; or Manuel Antonio National Park, about two hours south. This is where wildlife tours differ: not just in the animals you see, but in whether the guide shows them to you through a scope or lets you hand-feed them.

Watching or feeding? Article 116 of Costa Rica's Wildlife Conservation Law (Ley 7317) fines anyone who, without authorization from SINAC, the national parks agency, gives wild animals unauthorized food, with a fine of 15% to 30% of a base salary. On two of the tours below, guests describe capuchin monkeys climbing on them and eating bananas from their hands. That comes from guest reviews, not the listings: one operator's listing actually says guests may not feed the monkeys, and the other doesn't mention feeding. We include both because many readers will find them, but we don't recommend them, and our top pick and the other four tours involve no feeding in the reviews we read.

What to Expect: A Wildlife Day from Jacó

An ambitious full day with a car, from a morning in Carara to a night walk.

  1. 0108:00

    Carara walk

Meet your G&R Adventures guide at the Carara entrance, 30 minutes north of Jacó, for two to three hours on the trails.

  2. 02

    Lunch in Tárcoles

Drive the short way to Tárcoles for lunch near the river.

  3. 0313:30

    Crocodile boat

Board the early-afternoon crocodile boat for about an hour and three quarters on the river.

  4. 04

    Back to Jacó

Rest, swim or surf in Jacó before the evening outing.

  5. 0517:30

    Night walk

Head into the forest with boots and flashlights to look for frogs, snakes and owls.

  6. 06

    Dinner

Guests on the night walk describe dinner afterwards before the drive back to town.

If you have a car, you can combine three of the tours above into one full day. It is ambitious but workable: the Carara walk ends by about 11:00, the Tárcoles boats are a short drive away, the 13:30 boat is back by about 15:15, and Jacó is about 30 minutes south, leaving time to rest before the 17:30 night walk. Without a car, split it over two days.

Our take (watching vs feeding): The tours that let you feed monkeys get the most excited reviews, but the walks with a scope show you just as much: guests in Carara describe whole troops of monkeys, macaws and bats seen up close through the lens, without the animals being drawn in with food.

Every Jacó Wildlife Tour, Reviewed

First the five tours where you watch the animals, then the two monkey tours where guests describe feeding them. Prices are per adult unless noted.

Our Pick: Best Overall

G&R Adventures: Carara National Park

$45, ticket included · 4.9 from 256 reviews · 2 to 3 hrs · daily

A guided walk in Carara, the park where dry forest meets rainforest 30 minutes north of Jacó, with a guide who sets up a spotting scope on everything worth seeing. Recent guests list scarlet macaws, white-faced monkeys, ghost bats, poison dart frogs and trogons, and several describe the guide driving on to a macaw spot outside the park when none showed on the trail.

We'd book the 08:00 start and have passport details ready, because the operator registers you for entry. Our Carara National Park tour guide compares five more Carara tours, including a birding walk and a private tour with pickup.

2
Best for crocodiles

Jungle Crocodile Safari: Tárcoles River

$40, $30 ages 4 to 12 · 4.8 from 324 reviews · 1 hr 45 min · four departures daily

A boat trip on the Tárcoles River, 20 km north of Jacó, home to one of Costa Rica's best-known crocodile populations, with river birds along the banks. It is our top pick on the crocodile page because guests describe watching the animals rather than guides feeding them, which happens on some other Tárcoles boats.

Transport isn't included, so pair it with Carara the same morning: both are on the road north of town. Our Tárcoles River crocodile tour guide compares six crocodile tours.

Best after dark

Geriold's Experiences: Night Walk

$70, $65 ages 6 to 17 · 4.9 from 47 reviews · 3.5 hrs · daily at 17:30

An evening walk of about 1.5 km up a shallow, slow river near Jacó, in boots and with professional flashlights the company provides, to waterfalls where the guides look for glass frogs. Guests describe snakes including a fer-de-lance, toads, owls, spiders and scorpions, one group's guide found two sloths on request, and several mention a dinner afterwards.

We'd book this as the second wildlife outing of a trip, because it shows a completely different set of animals. Expect wet feet and the odd spider; one family with children aged 8 and 9 loved it. Bring a change of clothes if you want to swim in the pools, and a UV flashlight if you have one: one guest says scorpions are much easier to spot with it.

4
Best for birders

Sergio Birdwatching: Birding and Photography

$101.54 each · 5.0 from 74 reviews, every one five stars · from 06:30

A private morning with a local birder who picks you up in Jacó and drives to several spots around town to find the species on your list, with a telescope for photos. Guests describe dozens of species (one counted 33 in three hours), help with bird photography, and mornings that ran longer than the three hours listed; one group was out from a 05:45 pickup until 11:30.

It costs more than a Carara walk, but we'd choose it if you have a list of birds to see or want photography help, because it isn't tied to one park. One guest who came in May noted that most migratory birds had already left, so the species list changes with the season.

Best day trip

Tucanes Tours: Manuel Antonio from Jacó

$135, $40 under 6 · 4.8 from 111 reviews · 7 hrs · closed Tuesdays

Hotel pickup in Jacó at 06:30, breakfast at the company's center near Manuel Antonio, a guided hike with a scope through the national park, swimming time on its beach and lunch. Recent guests saw sloths, several kinds of monkeys, toucans, snakes and hummingbirds.

The tradeoff is time: guests put the drive at about two hours each way, so this fills your day. The listing doesn't say the park ticket is included, so confirm when you book. Most of the lower ratings come from guests who expected animals in plain view; apart from the monkeys, much of what you see is through the guide's scope, and one guest over 65 found an uphill stretch too strenuous.

Feeding reported

Geriold's Experiences: Monkey, Crocodile, Sloths and Beach

$88 to $92 · 4.9 from 144 reviews · 3.5 hrs · daily

A morning combining a capuchin monkey "sanctuary", the crocodiles from the Tárcoles bridge, a search for sloths, a beach and lunch, with pickup in Jacó and Herradura. The listing says guests may not feed the monkeys, but guests love the tour and many recent reviews describe monkeys climbing on their heads and shoulders and eating from their hands; one guest on the optional $43 boat touched a crocodile in the water.

We don't recommend it for that reason: giving wild animals unauthorized food is an offence under Costa Rica's wildlife law. The same company runs the night walk above, which reviews describe very differently.

Feeding reported

Jaco Travel Experts: Monkey Mangrove Tour

$78 · 4.7 from 137 reviews · 4.5 hrs · daily except Wednesday

Pickup in Jacó, about an hour's drive, then a two-hour boat trip through a mangrove estuary for birds, iguanas, sloths and capuchin monkeys. The listing doesn't mention feeding, but recent guests describe the guide calling the monkeys onto the boat and handing out banana pieces for them to take from guests' hands.

We don't recommend it while that continues. One guest saw only a couple of monkeys, and only because another boat was feeding them, which shows how much these tours rely on it.

Comparing parks? Guests describe Carara as quieter than Manuel Antonio, and it is a fraction of the drive from Jacó.

How Much Does a Wildlife Tour in Jacó Cost?

Wildlife tours from Jacó cost $40 to $135 per adult. The cheapest way to see the most is to drive yourself north for Carara ($45 with the ticket) and the Tárcoles crocodile boat ($40). What matters more than the price is transport: neither of those includes pickup, while the night walk, Sergio's birding and the Manuel Antonio trip do.

Couple, Carara and crocodiles$170

G&R Adventures' Carara walk ($90 for two) and the Jungle Crocodile Safari boat ($80 for two), driving yourself.

Couple, night walk$140

Geriold's Experiences night walk for two, with transport from Jacó.

Couple, Manuel Antonio day$270

Tucanes Tours with pickup, breakfast and lunch; confirm whether the park ticket is included.

Bring cash for tips: guides on all of these tours expect them.

Our Take

The pattern we keep seeing is that the most enthusiastic reviews on Jacó wildlife tours come from monkey tours where guests feed the animals, while the best-rated guided walks get there with a spotting scope instead. If seeing animals in the wild matters to you, the scope tours show just as much without breaking the law.

Tips for a Wildlife Tour in Jacó

  • Go early. Birds and monkeys are most active in the first hours after dawn; most of these tours start between 06:30 and 08:30.
  • Don't feed or touch wild animals. Giving wildlife unauthorized food can be fined under Costa Rica's wildlife law, and a tour that offers it is a tour we'd skip.
  • Bring bug spray, water and closed shoes. Mosquitoes come up often on the forest tours, and the night walk is done in river boots.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them. Guides carry scopes, but one Carara guest recommends binoculars for spotting between stops.
  • Plan Manuel Antonio around Tuesdays. The park is closed every Tuesday, so the day trip from Jacó doesn't run that day.
  • Want more of Carara? Our Carara National Park tour guide covers tickets, hours and five more tours.
  • Prefer an active morning? Our Jacó waterfall hike guide covers the river hikes behind town, where guides point out toucans and poison dart frogs along the way.
  • Visiting in September? Our Jacó in September guide covers peak whale season, turtle hatching at Playa Hermosa and which wildlife tours work best around heavy rain.
  • Visiting in October? Our Jacó in October guide covers the last whales of the season, turtle nesting at Playa Hermosa and the quietest weeks of the year for wildlife tours.
  • Visiting in December? Our Jacó in December guide covers the dry-season 07:00 opening at Carara, the last turtle-nesting month at Playa Hermosa and holiday-week bookings.

How We Selected These Tours

The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every wildlife, birding, night and national park tour offered from Jacó and checked each listing live on 20 October 2026: price by age, start times, transport, inclusions, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We required a guest review in the last six months and enough reviews to judge each tour. We left out a monkey and crocodile morning with no review since March, a mangrove kayak tour with no review since 2024, an older private Manuel Antonio tour with no review since March, a small-group Manuel Antonio tour that cannot be refunded and needs four adults, a monkey and beach tour with only eight reviews that also describes feeding, and a night tour with a bonfire dinner that has three reviews. We then read the most recent reviews of every tour, plus their one- to three-star reviews, and searched them for descriptions of guides or guests feeding or handling animals. The Wildlife contact column reflects what guests describe, not what the listings say. The legal position is Article 116 of Costa Rica's Wildlife Conservation Law (Ley 7317), as quoted by the Costa Rican conservation group APREFLOFAS, the same law cited on our Tárcoles crocodile page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best wildlife tour in Jacó?+

For most visitors, G&R Adventures' guided walk in Carara National Park: $45 with the park ticket, rated 4.9 from 256 reviews, 30 minutes north of Jacó, for scarlet macaws, monkeys and frogs. Pair it with a Tárcoles River crocodile boat the same morning.

What is the best sloth tour from Jacó?+

Tucanes Tours' Manuel Antonio day trip, where guests most often report sloths, seen through the guide's scope. They are seen occasionally in Carara and on the night walk, but no tour can promise them.

Where is the best place to see scarlet macaws near Jacó?+

In Carara National Park and around Tárcoles, both about 30 minutes north of town. Guides on Carara walks often drive on to a known macaw spot outside the park if none appear on the trail.

How much does a wildlife tour in Jacó cost?+

From $40 per adult for a Tárcoles crocodile boat to $135 for a Manuel Antonio day trip with meals, based on prices checked in October 2026. A Carara walk is $45 with the ticket and the night walk $70.

Is it legal to feed monkeys in Costa Rica?+

No. Article 116 of Costa Rica's Wildlife Conservation Law (Ley 7317) fines anyone who gives wild animals unauthorized food without SINAC authorization, at 15% to 30% of a base salary. Guests on two popular monkey tours near Jacó still describe feeding capuchins, which is why we don't recommend them.

Which Jacó wildlife tours are ethical?+

The five tours in this guide where guests watch rather than feed: the Carara walk, the Tárcoles crocodile boat, the night walk, Sergio's birding and the Manuel Antonio day trip. Their recent reviews describe animals seen through a scope or from a distance, with no feeding or handling.

Where can I see crocodiles near Jacó?+

On the Tárcoles River, about 20 km north of Jacó. You can see them free from the crocodile bridge on the coastal road, or up close on a boat tour such as Jungle Crocodile Safari's, from $40.

Can I visit Carara National Park without a guide?+

Yes. Buy your ticket online through SINAC beforehand, as it is not sold at the gate. But guests consistently say they saw far more with a guide and a spotting scope, and G&R Adventures' $45 walk already includes the ticket.

Are there night tours in Jacó?+

Yes. Geriold's Experiences runs a night walk daily at 17:30 for $70, up a shallow forest river near Jacó in boots and with flashlights, looking for frogs, snakes, owls and other nocturnal animals.

Can I see Manuel Antonio from Jacó in a day?+

Yes, but it is a long day. Tucanes Tours' trip takes about seven hours with roughly two hours of driving each way, includes breakfast and lunch, and does not run on Tuesdays, when the park is closed.
