Four ways to eat your way through Jacó, from a sunset street food walk through town to a private tasting tour, a farm lunch in the countryside and a hands-on chocolate workshop, with what you eat and who each one suits.
What to Know Before Booking a Jacó Food Tour
- A guided walk through downtown Jacó and along the beach, eating Costa Rican street food and bar dishes at several local stops; about three hours, drinks included on the main tour.
- The main food walk starts daily between 14:30 and 16:00, timed so one stop is a beachfront restaurant at sunset. The farm tour starts between 09:00 and 11:00; the chocolate workshop starts four times a day.
- The shared food walk costs $99 per person, or $109 with a sunset drink. A private walking tour is $107 each with a three-person minimum, a farm lunch $99 to $149 each, and chocolate $50.
- It is a walking tour more than a sit-down meal. Guests say to come hungry and do it early in your trip, because the guide's restaurant tips are half the value.
Food Tours in Jacó: What You're Booking
A Jacó food tour is a guided walk through the town's sodas, bars and beachfront restaurants, tasting the dishes Costa Ricans actually eat at the beach: caldosa (ceviche poured into a bag of corn chips), patacones, chifrijo, a michelada and a chiliguaro shot, finished with a Churchill, the shaved-ice dessert. Along the way the guide explains how Jacó grew from a fishing village into a surf town and points out where to eat for the rest of your stay. Beyond the town walks, two other experiences fit the same trip: a home-cooked farm lunch in the countryside south of Jacó, and a chocolate workshop at a cacao farm near Los Sueños.
Shared or private? Only one food walk in Jacó runs as a shared group: Taste of Costa Rica, at $99 each. The TICO tour is private but charges for at least three people, so a couple pays $321. That makes the shared walk the obvious choice for most couples and solo travelers, and the private tour worth it for groups of three or more who want their own pace.

This follows the Taste of Costa Rica walk. Stops can change depending on the day, but guests describe the same pattern: street food first, then bars, the beach at sunset and dessert.
Our take (timing): We'd book the latest start you can get. The walk begins in the afternoon heat, and the later slots put you at the beachfront restaurant closer to sunset, which several guests called the best moment of the tour. On a rainy day in June, one group was handed umbrellas and the walk went ahead.
Every Jacó Food Tour, Reviewed
First the two food walks in town, then the farm lunch and the chocolate workshop. Prices are per person unless noted.
Jaco Food & Culture Tours: Taste of Costa Rica
$99, or $109 with a sunset drink · 5.0 from 333 reviews · 3 to 4 hrs · daily
An afternoon walk from the Jaco Walk shopping center through downtown and along the beach. You start with caldosa, stop at a local bar for a michelada and chifrijo, take a chiliguaro shot, sit down at a beachfront restaurant for seafood as the sun sets and finish with a Churchill. Guests describe a guide who is well known around town, takes photos and sends them afterwards, and shares recommendations for the rest of your stay; some groups also stop at a souvenir shop. A few reviews from December to February also mention unexpectedly seeing a baby sea turtle release on the beach, but it is not part of the tour itinerary.
Two things come up again and again in reviews: come hungry, because it adds up to a full dinner, and book it early in your stay so you can use the recommendations. The tradeoff is the walking: one group with an older guest recovering from knee surgery found the route longer than expected.
Taste of Jaco: TICO Private Walking Food Tour
$107 each, minimum 3 · 4.9 from 18 reviews · 3 to 4 hrs · Mon and Thu to Sun
A private walk with four sit-down stops: caldosa at a cevichería, patacones at a traditional bar, a Tico tortilla with coffee at a café, and chifrijo at a beachside restaurant. Guests mention big portions, and families and a group of 14 were looked after well.
We'd only book it with three or more people: a couple who booked it still paid for three. One guest found their guide knew little about the town's history or the food, and one group's guide arrived two hours late, so confirm the meeting point and time by message the day before. Our Jacó private tours guide covers other private options in town.
Jaco Food & Culture Tours: Countryside Food Tour in Playón
$99 to $149 each (by group size) · 4.9 from 13 reviews · 4 to 6 hrs · starts 09:00 to 11:00
The same company drives you about 40 minutes from Jacó to the village of Playón, where Doña Yuri and her family cook lunch over a wood fire in an open-air rancho, using what they grow. After lunch you choose a short walk to a river or a 20-minute walk to a waterfall with a swimming pool, then return for coffee and homemade sweets, with a farm activity such as harvesting yuca or grinding corn depending on the season. Guests describe helping in the kitchen, pressing sugarcane for juice and learning which garden plants are used as remedies.
This is the one we'd choose if you want to see rural Costa Rica rather than the beach town. It gets cheaper per person as the group grows: four people pay $99 each, the same as the town walk. Its newest review dates from May 2026, so recent feedback is limited.
Vista Los Sueños: Chocolate Experience
$50 · 4.8 from 103 reviews · 2 hrs listed · four start times daily
A hands-on workshop at the adventure park above Los Sueños: you see the cacao trees, taste the fruit and beans at each stage, and make your own chocolate drink, finishing with a tasting. Recent guests from age two to 89 enjoyed it, and with no long walk it is the easiest option here for young children.
Treat it as a short activity rather than a meal. Some older reviews said it ran well under the two hours listed, and one guest wished they had seen the roasting. Vista Los Sueños also sells it combined with horseback riding or an ATV ride.
Pairing food with an adventure day? Vista Los Sueños' chocolate workshop is also sold as a combo with its horseback ride and ATV tour.
What Is the Best Food Tour in Jacó?
For most visitors, the best food tour in Jacó is Taste of Costa Rica by Jaco Food & Culture Tours. It combines several local food stops, drinks and a beachfront sunset stop in one $99 walk, and it is rated 5.0 from 333 reviews. It is also the only shared walking food tour in this comparison, which makes it the strongest choice for couples and solo travelers; groups of four who want to leave town should look at the Playón farm tour instead.
Where Jacó Food Tours Take Place
The food walks stay in town, while the farm and chocolate experiences take you a short drive out.
| Area | What happens there | Tours |
|---|---|---|
| Jaco Walk | Main meeting point, at the benches in the shopping center's parking lot | Taste of Costa Rica |
| Downtown Jacó | Street food stands, sodas and local bars along the main street | Taste of Costa Rica and the TICO private walk |
| Jacó Beach | Beach walk past the murals and a beachfront restaurant at sunset | Taste of Costa Rica and the TICO private walk |
| Playón | Family farm lunch in the countryside, about 40 minutes from Jacó with pickup | Countryside Food & Culture Tour |
| Los Sueños | Cacao farm at Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park, about 6 km north of Jacó | Chocolate Experience |
If you are staying in Jacó, both food walks start in town. From Los Sueños or Herradura, the chocolate workshop is the closest, while the town walks are a short taxi ride south.
How Much Does a Jacó Food Tour Cost?
Food tours in Jacó cost $99 to $149 per person, and the chocolate workshop $50. What matters more than the headline price is group size: the private TICO tour charges for at least three people, while the Playón farm tour gets cheaper with each person you add. The Taste of Costa Rica walk includes alcoholic drinks; on the private tour, tips are extra.
Taste of Costa Rica ($198, or $218 with the sunset drink), the Playón farm lunch ($258), or the private TICO tour, priced for three ($321).
Taste of Costa Rica or the Playón farm tour ($396 either way), or the private TICO tour ($428).
The chocolate workshop, open from age 6, at $200 for a family of four.
Bring cash for tips: guides on all of these tours expect them, and on the private tour they are not included.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing in reviews is that guests value the guide's local knowledge as much as the food: the people who booked on their first or second day used the restaurant tips all week, and the ones who booked on their last night say it is their only regret.
Tips for a Jacó Food Tour
- Book it early in your stay. The guide's recommendations for where to eat and what to do are a big part of the value.
- Traveling solo? Book the shared walk. Solo guests describe it as an easy way to meet people, and when bookings are light it can end up as a private tour.
- Come hungry. Guests describe the walk as a full dinner by the end, so skip a late lunch.
- Add dietary needs when you book. The dishes lean on pork and seafood; the operator asks for restrictions in advance.
- Wear comfortable shoes. It is a walking tour on town streets and the beach. If anyone in your group struggles with distance, ask about the route before booking.
- Check the age limits. The two Jaco Food & Culture Tours are for ages 10 and up; with younger children, the chocolate workshop or the private TICO walk are the options.
- Bring cash for tips and extras. Some groups stop at a souvenir shop along the way.
- Visiting in March? Our Jacó in March guide covers Semana Santa (21 to 28 March 2027), when restaurants and tours are at their busiest, and the calmer weeks either side.
- Visiting in June? Our Jacó in June guide covers the quiet green-season weeks, when the late-afternoon food walk is the natural plan for a rainy evening.
- Visiting in November? Our Jacó in November guide covers the quiet weeks before the December rush, early sunsets near 17:15 and Thanksgiving week in Jacó.
- Visiting in December? Our Jacó in December guide covers the return of clear sunsets, turtle releases on the beach and which holiday-week dates fill first.
- Pair it with a morning activity. The food walk starts mid-afternoon, so it fits after a morning horseback ride, ATV tour or Playa Fantasia snorkel trip.
- Planning the rest of your trip? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge.
How We Selected These Tours
The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every food, cooking and chocolate experience offered in Jacó and checked each listing live on 20 October 2026: price by group size, times, ages, inclusions, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We required a guest review in the last six months and enough reviews to judge each tour. We left out a second Jacó walking food tour with a single review from 2025, an organic food and waterfall experience with no review in eight months, a zipline and chocolate combo with no recent reviews, and a night jungle walk with a bonfire dinner that has only three reviews and is more a wildlife tour than a food tour. We then read the most recent reviews of all four tours, plus every one- to three-star review, with attention to how much food was served, how long each tour really ran and who it suited.
