Seven coffee tours you can do from San José, from a $35 farm tour at Hacienda Doka and a barista tasting downtown to a horseback ride through Aquiares and coffee + Poás Volcano day trips with hotel pickup.
What to Know Before Booking a Coffee Tour from San José
- A guided walk through a working coffee farm on Poás Volcano's lower slopes, about an hour from downtown San José, ending in a tasting; most are sold inside a full-day Poás trip.
- Farm-only tours run 75 minutes to 4 hours with daily starts; coffee + Poás day trips collect you from your hotel between 05:30 and 08:00 and return 8 to 13 hours later.
- A farm tour without transport costs $35, horseback or downtown tasting options $65 to $70, and day trips with pickup $109.61 to $187 per adult; two of them rise on 1 December 2026.
- On every combo the coffee comes first and Poás later in the morning, when clouds often cover the crater. Few poor reviews fault the coffee; most fault clouds, pickup loops and traffic.
Coffee Tours in San José, Costa Rica: What You're Booking
A coffee tour in San José, Costa Rica almost always means leaving the city. The capital sits in the Central Valley, and the nearest working farms are on the slopes of Poás Volcano above Alajuela, about 32 km and an hour's drive from downtown. You walk the coffee rows, see how the cherries are picked, washed, dried and roasted, and finish with a tasting. What changes from tour to tour is everything around that: whether transport is included, whether Poás Volcano and a waterfall are added, and how much of the day is actually about coffee.
We found three types of coffee tour near San José. The first is a farm tour you get to yourself, like Hacienda Doka's 75-minute tour for $35. The second is a full-day coffee + Poás trip with hotel pickup, the most-booked format, which runs $109.61 to $187 per adult. The third is a coffee tasting inside the city, for travelers who would rather not spend the day in a van.

This follows Costa Rica Itinerary's day, our top pick. Guests describe the order of the stops changing with the weather; the guide sometimes moves the volcano earlier on a clear morning. From what we've seen in reviews, the processing and brewing demonstration after lunch is the part coffee lovers single out, and it is what separates this tour from the combos where coffee is a single stop.
Every Coffee Tour Near San José, Reviewed
First the four coffee + Poás day trips with hotel pickup, then the two farms you reach yourself and the tasting in the city. Prices are per adult unless noted.
Costa Rica Itinerary: Poás + Coffee + Waterfall
$149.86, all ages · 4.8 from 99 reviews · 10 to 12 hrs · daily
The day trip that gives coffee the most time. Recent guests describe two parts: a walk through the coffee farm, then, after a Costa Rican lunch, a demonstration of processing, roasting and brewing, including the traditional chorreado cloth filter, with a tasting at the end. In between you visit the Poás crater, and on the way back you stop at the La Paz waterfall beside the road. The listing's farm description and web address point to Starbucks' farm, Hacienda Alsacia (tree nursery, wet mill, drying patio and roaster), but recent guests don't name the farm, so ask which one when you book.
We'd pick it for coffee lovers who also want the volcano. The tradeoff is the waterfall: this is the free roadside fall, not La Paz Waterfall Gardens with its wildlife exhibits, and one July 2026 guest felt misled by that. Pickup at 08:00 is later than the other combos; guests in 2026 say the 10-hour day never felt rushed.
ASSISTTOURS: Coffee, Poás and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
$185 · 4.9 from 823 reviews · 10 hrs · daily
The best-reviewed day trip from San José, with 766 of its 823 reviews at five stars. The listing names the coffee stop as La Casita del Café, the Vargas family plantation in San Isidro de Alajuela. Guests describe learning how the crop is grown and time for a fresh cup, and the listing adds a viewpoint over the valley, before Poás and an afternoon at La Paz Waterfall Gardens with its rescued animals, five waterfalls and a buffet lunch.
Choose it if you want the full day rather than the deepest coffee lesson. Recent reviews describe the coffee stop as interesting but short, and accounts differ on whether your cup is included: one May 2026 guest had to buy theirs. Guests were given a pickup window of 07:30 to 08:30, and children 3 and up pay the full $185.
Expediciones Tropicales: Doka, Poás and La Paz
$187, $140.25 ages 3 to 10 · 4.8 from 367 reviews · 13 hrs · daily
The combo with the most formal coffee tour: two hours at Hacienda Doka, starting with a typical Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto, then a guided walk through the plantation and processing sheds and a tasting of several roasts with chocolate-covered beans. Then come 20 minutes at the Poás crater viewpoint, the limit set by the volcano authorities, and three hours at La Paz Waterfall Gardens with lunch.
Book it if you want breakfast and lunch covered and a child rate. The cost is time: pickup starts at 05:30, and guests note that if you are collected first you spend an extra hour on the bus while the van fills. Prices rise to $194 for adults and $145.50 for children on 1 December 2026.
Expediciones Tropicales: Doka and Poás Half Day
$109.61, $82.21 ages 3 to 10 · 4.5 from 45 reviews · 8 hrs · daily
The same Doka breakfast and coffee tour, cut to 90 minutes, then the Poás crater and back, without La Paz. Guests liked the coffee and found the volcano a gamble: one March 2026 group arrived just after the crater had filled with cloud and waited ten minutes for a glimpse.
Don't treat it as a true half day. Guests say it runs about eight hours, and one March 2026 guest spent almost three hours in traffic getting back into San José and missed an afternoon tour. Its 4.5 rating is the lowest of the combos here, and the price rises to $134 on 1 December 2026, which leaves it only about $16 cheaper than our top pick.
Hacienda Doka: Coffee Experience Tour
$35, $16 ages 6 to 12 · 4.5 from 332 reviews · 75 min · daily
The tour the Doka day trips are built around, booked direct with the estate for a fraction of the price. Doka says it has grown coffee for more than 100 years and that its wet mill is the oldest still working in Costa Rica. Guests describe a welcome iced coffee, a walk from seedlings to drying patios and the roaster, and a tasting of several roasts at the end. Tours start every hour from 08:00 to 15:30.
This is our pick if you have a car or a driver. The farm is about an hour from downtown San José and under 50 minutes from the airport. Food is extra; guests have paired the tour with breakfast or the buffet lunch on site. The poor reviews are mostly about the gift shop: one March 2026 guest paid $20 for a 300 g bag listed at $13 in Doka's online store.
Aquiares: Horseback Coffee Tour
$65, $40 ages 4 to 12 · 5.0 from 50 reviews · 4 hrs · 09:00 or 13:00
Every one of its 50 reviews is five stars. You ride calm horses through the Aquiares coffee farm, 7 km north of Turrialba, to a waterfall and the Ceibo lookout, visit the beneficio (the mill) and the village church, and finish at the old hacienda house with coffee, fruit and homemade cake or pancakes. Guests with little riding experience say the horses were easy.
It is a working rural farm, not a coffee museum, and that is the appeal. The catch is distance: Aquiares is about two hours' drive from downtown San José with no transport included, so it suits travelers heading east toward Turrialba or the Caribbean. One guest noted the tour covers growing and harvesting more than the bean-to-cup process. Bookings are for 2 to 5 people.
Go Local Costa Rica: Walking Tour with Coffee Tasting
$70 each for 2+, $85 solo, $30 ages 4 to 12 · 4.9 from 38 reviews · 2 to 3 hrs · 15:00
The only option that doesn't need a vehicle. You meet at the National Theatre, walk through downtown's historic districts and parks, then sit down in a boutique coffee shop for a tasting led by a barista, with a flight of Costa Rican chocolate and raw cacao and a pastry. Guests name stops such as a cacao shop and a coffee "library", and one January 2026 group's tour ran about 3.5 hours, plus an extra walk to the Central Market.
We'd book it on an arrival or departure day, or if you have already seen a farm elsewhere. It is about coffee as a drink, not a crop: you see no plants. One October 2026 tour was run in English and Spanish together. For more of the city itself, see our San José city tour guide, and for its food, our San José food tour guide.
Already heading north to Arenal or Monteverde? Their family farms pair coffee with hands-on chocolate making and sugar cane, so you may prefer to save your coffee tour for there.
Coffee Farm Only, or Coffee + Poás Volcano?
Most coffee tours from San José are sold as part of a Poás Volcano day, so the real decision is whether you want the volcano too.
Our take (the volcano is the gamble, not the coffee): Few of the poor reviews we read are about the coffee itself. Most are about the crater being covered in cloud, and on every combo the coffee comes first, so you reach Poás later in the morning. One November 2025 guest blamed the coffee stop for missing a clear crater. If the crater view is what matters, book an early Poás trip on its own and do Doka on another day. If you mainly want coffee, take a combo and think of the volcano as a bonus.
- Choose a farm tour only if you have a car, want coffee rather than a checklist, or only have a morning. Hacienda Doka at $35 is the cheapest way to see a working farm near the city.
- Choose a coffee + Poás combo if you don't want to drive mountain roads or buy Poás tickets yourself. Poás tickets are sold only online through SINAC for timed entries, and since August 2026 visitors wear helmets and get up to 20 minutes at the crater viewpoint. Our Poás Volcano rules guide explains the current limits.
- Choose a combo with La Paz Waterfall Gardens (ASSISTTOURS or Expediciones Tropicales) if you also want the park's animal rescue exhibits and five waterfall trail; Costa Rica Itinerary's tour stops at the roadside fall instead. Know that the park's animals are in enclosures: several guests felt it was closer to a zoo than wildlife in the wild.
- Skip the full-day combos with toddlers or if you dislike shopping stops. The days run 10 to 13 hours, one family never got to use their stroller, and most combos stop at a strawberry stand or a coffee and souvenir shop below Poás that is not on the itinerary.
Where the coffee farms are
| Farm | Area | From downtown San José | From SJO airport | Tours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hacienda Doka | Sabanilla de Alajuela, on Poás' lower slopes | 32 km, about 1 hr | 22 km, about 47 min | Doka farm tour; both Expediciones Tropicales tours |
| Hacienda Alsacia (Starbucks) | San Isidro de Alajuela | 32 km, about 1 hr | 22 km, about 49 min | Described in Costa Rica Itinerary's listing |
| La Casita del Café (Familia Vargas) | San Isidro de Alajuela | Not mapped | Not mapped | ASSISTTOURS |
| Aquiares | 7 km north of Turrialba | 62 km, about 2 hrs | 82 km, about 2 hrs 40 min | Aquiares horseback tour |
| Downtown coffee shop | Central San José | Walking distance | About 20 km | Go Local Costa Rica |
Drive times are our calculation from Mapbox routes without traffic, from the center of San José and from Juan Santamaría airport. Rush-hour traffic in the Central Valley can double them, especially coming back into San José in the late afternoon.
When to go
All seven tours run every day of the year. Guests who visited between November and January saw pickers in the fields and beans at every stage of processing, while some off-season visitors found the machines idle and the process explained with displays, so a visit during harvest shows you more. At Poás, mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, but guests on every combo report days when the crater stayed in cloud.
How Much Does a Coffee Tour in San José Cost?
A coffee tour near San José costs $35 for a farm tour on its own, $65 to $70 for the horseback ride or the city tasting, and $109.61 to $187 per adult for a coffee + Poás day with hotel pickup. Those prices include very different things. The farm tour includes no transport or food, and Aquiares is two hours away, while the full days include pickup, park fees and usually lunch. The main tradeoff on the $35 farm tour is getting there: unless you already have a rental car, a taxi or driver for the hour each way, often with waiting time, is part of the real price. Tips are extra on all of them.
Costa Rica Itinerary at $299.72 with lunch and park fees, or ASSISTTOURS at $370 if you want La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
Hacienda Doka at $35 each, plus your car, taxi or driver for the hour each way, and any breakfast or lunch on site.
Hacienda Doka at $102 before transport. A full day costs $599.44 with Costa Rica Itinerary or $654.50 with Expediciones Tropicales ($679 from 1 December).
Child pricing varies more than adult pricing. Costa Rica Itinerary and ASSISTTOURS charge children the adult rate, while Expediciones Tropicales charges $140.25 for ages 3 to 10 and Hacienda Doka $16 for ages 6 to 12.
Our Take
Across these listings, the more stops a day trip adds, the less of it is about coffee: the La Paz Gardens combos give the farm one short stop, while a Doka visit or our pick's farm walk and processing demo make coffee a real part of the day. Choose by how much coffee you actually want.
Tips for a Coffee Tour Near San José
- Keep the evening free. Guests on both full and half days describe up to three hours in traffic coming back into San José, and one missed a tour booked for 16:30.
- Expect a pickup loop. On the shared combos, the first guests collected can spend an hour in the van while it picks up others. ASSISTTOURS gave guests a pickup window of 07:30 to 08:30.
- Use your whole time at the crater. Clouds at Poás often move within 10 to 20 minutes, and several guests who waited at the viewpoint got a clear look after arriving to a white-out.
- Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket. The farms sit above the city and Poás is at 2,708 metres, so even a hot day in San José can be cold and wet on the mountain.
- Pace yourself on samples. At Doka you get coffee at the start and the end of the tour, and the shop offers more tastings before you buy.
- Compare shop prices. Estate gift shops can charge more than the same brand's online store or a San José supermarket, so check before buying bags to take home.
- Driving yourself? Hacienda Doka is under 50 minutes from the airport, which makes it an easy first or last morning; our hotels near San José airport guide covers where to sleep nearby.
- Want more day trips? Our Costa Rica tours from San José guide compares the other full days from the city, from Arenal to Manuel Antonio, and our best things to do in San José guide covers the city itself.
- Heading to Arenal or Monteverde? Our La Fortuna coffee tour guide and Monteverde coffee tour guide cover the small family farms there, where coffee is paired with chocolate and sugar cane.
- Still choosing a base? Our best hotels in San José guide ranks the downtown, Escazú and La Sabana options.

How We Selected These Tours
The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every coffee tour sold from San José and checked each listing live on 5 November 2026: price by age, start times, inclusions, transport, cancellation terms and the full star breakdown. We also checked where each farm is and calculated drive times from San José and the airport. We required a guest review in the last six months. We left out two Britt coffee tours (one with no review since February 2026, one with a single review), Aquiares' full-day tour (no review since February 2025), a Hacienda La Chimba tour with no reviews, and a semi-private Poás and Starbucks tasting with two reviews. We also left out two coffee + Poás combos rated 4.3 and 4.5 with many more one-star reviews than the ones above, and Costa Rica Itinerary's other Poás tour, which spends only 30 minutes at the farm. We then read 407 reviews of the seven tours, the most recent of each plus the latest one- to three-star reviews, looking at how much time guests actually spent on coffee, whether the crater was visible, and how long the day really ran.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far are the coffee farms from San José?+
The closest, Hacienda Doka and Hacienda Alsacia above Alajuela, are about 32 km or an hour's drive from downtown San José and under 50 minutes from the airport without traffic. Aquiares, near Turrialba, is about 62 km or two hours away.
How much does a coffee tour in San José cost?+
Based on prices checked on 5 November 2026, Hacienda Doka's farm tour costs $35 without transport, the Aquiares horseback tour $65 and a downtown coffee tasting tour $70. Coffee + Poás day trips with hotel pickup cost $109.61 to $187 per adult.
Can I do a coffee tour near San José without a day trip?+
Yes. Hacienda Doka sells its 75-minute tour on its own for $35, with starts every hour from 08:00 to 15:30. You arrange your own car, taxi or driver; bookings need at least two people.
Is there a coffee tour in San José city itself?+
There are no coffee farms in the city, but Go Local Costa Rica runs a daily walking tour from the National Theatre at 15:00 that ends with a barista-led coffee tasting and a chocolate flight, for $70 per person.
When is coffee harvest season near San José?+
Guests who visited between November and January saw pickers in the fields and beans at every stage of processing. Tours run all year, but off-season visitors sometimes found the machines idle.
Will I see the Poás crater on a coffee + Poás tour?+
