February is, in our view, the most underrated month in La Fortuna. It gets nearly everything January gets, the clear cone, the firm trails, the reliable sun, but it does it with 30mm less rain, no holiday surcharge, and a town that has gone back to normal after the New Year crush. Arenal spends much of the green season wrapped in cloud; February is one of the two or three months when the mountain genuinely shows itself, often for days at a stretch.

We'd give this the edge for anyone whose dates are flexible between January and February. The tradeoff is that February is still high season: rooms are not cheap, the waterfall car park still fills by mid-morning, and the most-reviewed tours still want a day or two of notice. Temperature and Humidity

February runs a degree warmer than January, with days around 30°C (86°F) and nights holding at about 21°C (71°F). Humidity is moderate by tropical standards, so the heat rarely feels heavy the way it does in July or September. Mornings are the pick of the day: bright, still, and comfortable for hiking before the sun gets high. Evenings are pleasant enough for dinner outdoors and cool enough to make a hot springs soak feel earned. UV is very high year-round this close to the equator, so sunscreen matters even on an overcast morning.

Rain Pattern

At roughly 120mm, February is the second-driest month of the La Fortuna year, behind only March and April. That is a real step down from January's 150mm and a fraction of October's 375mm. The rain that does fall behaves like January's: brief showers, an overnight spell, or a passing drizzle rather than the long afternoon downpours of the green season. Most guests find that a single week in February loses no activities at all to weather, provided the outdoor plans sit in the morning.

Volcano Visibility and Trail Conditions

Arenal makes its own weather, and less moisture in the air means fewer days when the summit is capped. February delivers clear cone views on most mornings, particularly between sunrise and mid-morning before daytime heating builds cloud around the peak. On the ground, the 1968 lava-field trails, the waterfall staircase and the hanging bridge circuits are all firm and far less slippery than in green season, which makes February one of the easiest months for hiking with children or anyone unsure on wet footing.

February is high season without the peak-season spike, and that combination is what makes it good value in relative terms.

• Early February: the last of the January momentum carries over, but the holiday travelers are long gone. Restaurants are busy in the evenings, tours run full, and rooms sit at steady high-season rates rather than the January premium.
• Mid-February: the calmest stretch of the dry season so far. No domestic holidays, no festival pulling crowds through the region, and easy tour availability a day or two ahead. In our view this is the best two-week window of the first quarter.
• Late February: traffic starts rising again as the March dry-season peak approaches. Still comfortable, but book the headline tours a little further ahead than you would mid-month.

Mid-range hotels in La Fortuna town run roughly $130 to $190 a night through February, against $180 to $260 during the January holiday tail. That is a meaningful saving on a week-long trip for weather that is, if anything, slightly better. The biggest difference between January and February is not the sky, it is the bill and the queue.

If the budget is genuinely tight, the green season is a different but rewarding La Fortuna: waterfalls at full volume, deeper green rainforest, and rates that can halve. You trade the volcano and the dry trails for it. Our take: February is the best compromise on the calendar between conditions and cost.

The volcano is the reason most people come to La Fortuna, and it is also the most weather-dependent sight in the region. Through the wet months the summit hides behind its own cloud cap for days on end. In February, clear mornings are the norm rather than the exception, and with less atmospheric moisture than January the cone often holds its shape well into the middle of the day.

The daily rhythm is consistent enough to plan around. Skies are clearest from sunrise to mid-morning, before heating pushes cloud up around the peak. By mid-afternoon the summit is frequently veiled, and it often clears again near sunset. La Fortuna's dry season is real, but it is not rainless. February averages around 120mm, the second-lowest total of the year, and that still adds up to a number of wet spells across the month. The reason is geography: La Fortuna sits on the Caribbean-facing slope, where trade winds push moisture against the mountains year-round, while the Pacific coast a few hours away goes genuinely bone dry from December to April.

In practice this is a small constraint rather than a problem. February rain is typically a short shower, an overnight spell, or a drizzle that has cleared by breakfast, not the multi-hour afternoon deluge of September and October. Trails drain quickly and tours very rarely cancel. What typically happens is that a shower passes through while you are already somewhere it does not matter, on a hot springs terrace or under the roof of a coffee mill.

Two practical consequences. First, pack a light rain jacket and quick-dry layers even in the second-driest month, and treat a poncho as standard for the waterfall and the bridges. Second, front-load the itinerary: put the volcano hike, waterfall and bridges in the morning, and leave hot springs, coffee tours and cooking classes for the afternoon, when a shower costs you nothing.

The single most useful thing to understand about La Fortuna's climate is that temperature barely moves all year, while rainfall swings roughly fivefold. Daytime highs sit between 29 and 32°C every month and nights hover around 21°C, so you pack the same clothes in January as in July. What actually changes your trip is how much rain falls, and when.

If you want thundering waterfalls, fuller rivers, and lower rates, the green season delivers, and you accept afternoon rain as the price.

February is the quietest month on Costa Rica's festival calendar, and that is a feature rather than a gap.

• No national holidays: February has no public holiday at all, which means no domestic travel spike and no regional road traffic to plan around. It is the single easiest month for getting between destinations.
• Fiestas de los Diablitos (early February): the Boruca people's traditional Danza de los Diablitos takes place in the far south of the country, many hours from La Fortuna. It is culturally significant and worth knowing about, but it has no practical effect on an Arenal trip.
• Steady high-season rhythm: not an event, but February is when long-stay North American and European visitors are still in the country in volume, so restaurants and popular tours stay comfortably busy without feeling overrun.

Nothing here should change your plans. If anything, the absence of a domestic holiday is precisely why February feels calmer than the months on either side of it.
