Ten ATV tours in Jacó compared, from a two-hour ride above town to full days with lunch in a mountain village, with what each costs, who can drive and how big the credit-card hold is.

What You Should Know

  • Guided rides from Jacó into the rainforest hills behind town, with ocean lookouts and, on most rides of three hours or more, a waterfall swim. Most tours use ATVs with room for a passenger; one operator also runs side-by-side buggies for two to four.
  • Tours run daily all year with starts from 08:00 to 15:00. Two- and three-hour rides fill a morning or afternoon; lunch tours and zipline combos take four to seven hours.
  • Prices run from $85 per driver for two hours to $199 for a private full day. Children ride on the back from $29, and drivers need a licence and a credit card for the deposit.
  • Two-hour rides skip the swimming waterfall, which sits on the three-hour route down a rocky path below the trail; that matters more than the $20 price gap when choosing a length.

Jacó ATV Tours: What You Are Booking

A Jacó ATV tour starts in town on the Central Pacific coast and takes you, driving your own quad bike behind a bilingual guide, up the dirt roads and river crossings into the hills behind the beach. The rides stay outside any national park, on rural trails and farm roads, and the longer ones reach small mountain villages such as Bijagual. The payoff on most tours is a jungle waterfall where you can swim, and on the best-reviewed routes, a lookout over Jacó Beach and the Nicoya Peninsula. Wildlife is a frequent bonus: toucans, scarlet macaws, monkeys and the odd sloth turn up in dozens of recent reviews, and guides stop to point them out.

Two hours or three? The two-hour rides are a loop to the ocean views with a small trailside waterfall. The three-hour rides add a stop at a swimming waterfall and, usually, a snack at a mountaintop restaurant. Two recent reviewers of ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's three-hour ride go out of their way to say they were glad they did not pick the two-hour one, and three hours is our pick for a first ride.

What to Expect on a Jacó ATV Tour

Three hours from Jacó into the hills behind town and back.

  1. 0109:00

    Check-in in Jacó

Pickup in the Jacó area on request. Watch a safety video, show your licence, leave the card hold and get your helmet.

  2. 02

    Into the hills

Meadows, streams and dirt roads, then a steady climb into the rainforest with stops for photos and wildlife.

  3. 03

    Cascada del Zorro

A 35-foot waterfall about halfway up the mountain, a stop for photos and a first chance to get wet.

  4. 04

    Waterfall swim

A hike down a rocky path to the second waterfall and its natural pool. Swim, or take the jump from the rocks.

  5. 05

    Mountaintop stop

Most groups stop at a small restaurant with an ocean view for empanadas or a smoothie, paid separately.

  6. 06

    Back down to Jacó

A different route back to the office, usually covered in dust or mud.

This follows ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's three-hour waterfall ride. The two-hour tour skips the swim stop; the four-hour tour adds lunch in Bijagual.

Our take (morning or afternoon): We'd book the 09:00 start in any season: it beats the midday heat in the dry months, and in the green season, when rain usually arrives in the afternoon, the operator itself advised one guest to come early. ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica rides in all weather, and guests who hit rain mostly say it made the ride more fun.

1
Best overall

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: 3-Hour ATV & Jungle Waterfall

$105 per driver and $38 for a child on the back, rated 4.9 from 908 reviews with 847 of them five stars. The route climbs into the hills behind Jacó to the 35-foot Cascada del Zorro, then on to a second waterfall with a natural pool and an optional jump. Jacó-area pickup and waterfall entry are included; the snack stop at a mountaintop restaurant is not. Reviews keep naming the guides and the small groups, often just one family. The one recurring complaint is photos: several guests paid for or were promised photos and video that never arrived, so take your own pictures too. We'd give it the edge over the four-hour ride for a first visit: it reaches a swimming waterfall an hour sooner, and guests describe the four-hour tour's extra time as mostly road riding.

Best value

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: 2-Hour Jungle Adventure

$85 per driver and $29 for a child passenger, rated 4.8 from 184 reviews. About 20 km of trail to a 2,000-foot lookout over the Pacific and the Nicoya Peninsula, with a small trailside waterfall but no swim stop. It suits families and anyone short on time; one family with kids of seven and eight and their grandparents rode it together. One family wished for more off-road terrain, which is why we'd lean toward paying $20 more for three hours and the swimming waterfall.

3
Best with lunch

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: 4-Hour Ride & Rainforest Lunch

$139 per driver for four hours, rated 4.9 from 352 reviews. It adds a 30-foot swimming waterfall, a mirador over the coast and a Costa Rican lunch in the mountain village of Bijagual. Reviews praise the lunch and the views; one group of six noted that about 90 percent of the ride was on roads, some paved, rather than narrow trail. Book it for the scenery and the village, not for hard off-roading.

Best combo

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: ATV + Zipline, Waterfall & Lunch

$179 per adult and $119 per child for six hours, rated 5.0 from 84 reviews with no score below four. Ten ziplines over 12 platforms at Los Sueños, including a 2,400-foot cable, then a two-hour ATV ride to a waterfall and a casado lunch at a countryside restaurant. Guests mention that the ATV route can be adjusted on the day, and one group had part of the day rescheduled for lightning without any trouble.

5
Longest ride

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica: The King's Full-Day Adventure

$199 per driver for six to seven hours as a private tour, rated 4.9 from 109 reviews. It strings together Cascada del Zorro, ridge-top views toward Playa Hermosa, mountain villages and lunch in Bijagual. Fewer people book it, and one recent reviewer found it simply too long, advising a shorter ride that still reaches the waterfall and the ocean lookout. We'd only choose this if you already know you love riding: the waterfall and the ocean lookout are both on the three-hour route.

6
Most flexible

AXR Jacó: ATV Tour in Jacó

$90 for two hours, $125 for three and $150 for four, rated 4.8 from 313 reviews, leaving every half hour from the centre of Jacó. Waterfall swims only come on the three- and four-hour rides, and drivers must be 18. The best reviews describe guides who stop for monkeys, toucans, moonshine bars and local food. Recent reviews are more mixed than the other operators: two one-star reviews in the past year describe a child's helmet that did not fit and a shortened route, so we'd look elsewhere if you are bringing young children, where helmet fit and a full route matter most.

Best for two in one vehicle

AXR Jacó: Buggy Tour in Jacó

Priced per side-by-side buggy, not per person: $120 for one hour for one or two people, $180 for two hours and $230 for three, with larger buggies for three or four. Rated 4.8 from 134 reviews. Guests describe rice fields, river crossings, a waterfall and a restaurant stop on the longer rides. It is the simplest choice for a passenger who does not want to drive, but the $1,500 card hold per buggy is the highest here, and one guest waited an hour for a replacement tire after a flat.

Best park-based ride

Vista Los Sueños: 3-Hour ATV & Waterfalls

$99 per rider for three hours, rated 4.9 from 69 reviews. You meet at the adventure park near Los Sueños, where there are lockers, and ride through riverbeds, streams and ocean-view trails with waterfall stops. Transport is extra. The listing mentions a private beach 'if time allows'; one December guest found no beach and small waterfalls. Expect a $1,000 card hold for up to five ATVs, or $25 per ATV in non-refundable insurance instead. We think the tradeoff is the start point: the park has lockers and showers, but with no hotel pickup, a taxi or rental car becomes part of the plan.

Biggest combo

Vista Los Sueños: Zip Line + 3-Hour ATV & Waterfalls

$145.40 per person for five hours, rated 4.9 from 214 reviews. A tractor ride up the mountain, ten ziplines back down, then three hours on the ATV; fruit and water are included and lunch is sold at the park. Ages 8 and up, with a 250 lb zipline limit. Guests call the guides patient with nervous first-timers, and one warns the harnesses are a tight fit.

10
Most extreme

The Park at Ocean Ranch: ATV, Waterfall Rappel & Zipline

$160 per person at every age for five hours, rated 4.8 from 102 reviews. About 90 minutes on the ATV inside a private park, a rappel down the 180-foot El Encanto waterfall and a zipline course. Reviews praise the guides but note a steep hike to the top of the waterfall and less water in the dry season. Two recent one-star reviews describe a $30 pickup charge for a solo traveller and a $400 damage charge, so photograph your ATV before you ride. We'd expect it to work best for groups of two or more who want variety over riding time: its ATV leg, at about 90 minutes, is the shortest of the combos here.

How Much Does an ATV Tour in Jacó Cost?

ATV tours in Jacó cost $85 to $199 per driver. Most operators price per rider, so two adults on two ATVs pay double, while a child on the back of a parent's ATV costs far less. Tips are not included on any tour here. The biggest difference between operators is how children are priced: a child on the back costs $29 to $54 with ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica, while The Park at Ocean Ranch charges $160 at every age.

Short ride, for two$170 to $198

Two drivers on ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's two-hour ride ($170), AXR Jacó's two-hour ride ($180) or Vista Los Sueños' three-hour ride ($198).

Waterfall ride, for two$210 to $278

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's three-hour ride at $210 for two drivers, or the four-hour ride with lunch at $278. A family of four with two children on the back pays $286 for the three-hour ride.

Combos and full days, for two$290 to $398

Vista Los Sueños' zipline and ATV combo at $290.80, The Park at Ocean Ranch's rappel combo at $320, ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's zipline combo at $358 and the private full day at $398.

Two people happy to share one vehicle can take AXR Jacó's buggy for $120 an hour in total, the cheapest way for a couple to ride.

Our Take

What we consistently see in reviews is that the guide and the group size make the ride: many guests on ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's waterfall tours end up alone with their guide, and they describe it as a private tour. The complaints that do come up are almost all about money at the counter (deposits, insurance, photos), not the riding.

Tips for an ATV Tour in Jacó

  • Bring a Visa or Mastercard with room on it. Holds range from $500 per two ATVs to $1,500 per buggy. A guest who brought a $500-limit card to Vista Los Sueños paid $25 for insurance instead. Most people don't realize the hold counts vehicles, not riders, so doubling up on one ATV lowers it.
  • Bring your driver's licence. Most operators require drivers to be 16 or older with a valid licence; AXR Jacó's minimum is 18. Teenagers without one ride on the back.
  • Expect a hike to the waterfall. The swim stops sit below the trail, down rocky paths or steep steps, and guests with bad knees flag it. Guides do help: one guest with a knee replacement was walked down safely, but you can also wait at the top.
  • First time on an ATV is fine, but the hills are real. Nervous first-time drivers regularly say they relaxed within minutes. The upper trails are steep, rocky and narrow in places, though, and one guest who did not feel safe there saw her partner slide into a ditch. If that worries you, ride on the back or take the buggy.
  • Cover your face in the dry season. From roughly December to April the trails are very dusty. Helmets have visors, but several guests recommend goggles and a neck gaiter or mask.
  • Wear a swimsuit under old clothes. Closed shoes are required, and a towel and dry clothes for the drive home help, especially after rain.
  • Take your own photos. Guides film the ride and offer a paid photo package, but at least four guests in the past year never received theirs. Hand the guide your phone as well, in a waterproof pouch, and ask for extra stops if you want them: the guide sets the pace, and a couple of guests felt they rushed past views.
  • Book three hours, not two, for the waterfall. The swim and the jump are on the three-hour route, and two recent guests who did it said the two-hour version would have missed the best parts.
  • Bring water and some cash. Midday rides are hot, and guests recommend starting early to beat both the heat and other groups. The mountaintop restaurant stop and tips are not included.
  • Check where you start. ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica and AXR Jacó leave from Jacó itself; Vista Los Sueños and The Park at Ocean Ranch are parks outside town, and transport may cost extra. Vista Los Sueños has lockers and showers, which helps if you are heading somewhere afterwards.
  • Visiting in February? Our Jacó in February guide covers the driest weeks of the year, when the trails are firm but dusty and the hilltop views reach Tortuga Island and Manuel Antonio.
  • Visiting in May? Our Jacó in May guide covers the start of the green season, when the trails swap dust for mud and morning rides beat the afternoon storms.
  • Visiting in September? Our Jacó in September guide covers one of the wettest months, when the trails are at their muddiest and morning rides are the safest bet.
  • Riding elsewhere too? Compare with our Manuel Antonio ATV tours, and for a quieter morning in Jacó, our Jacó surf lessons guide. Prefer to explore on foot? Our Jacó waterfall hike guide covers the river hikes in the same hills, and our Jacó food tour guide covers the afternoon food walk in town.
  • Planning the rest of your trip? Our best things to do in Jacó guide ranks the top nine experiences and covers the free ones, from the beach to the crocodile bridge. Travelling with kids? Our best things to do in Jacó for families guide adds minimum ages and prices for a family of four.

How We Selected These Tours

The Costa Rica Day Trip team searched every ATV, buggy and off-road tour listed for Jacó and kept those rated 4.5 or higher from at least 50 reviews. We then checked each live listing on 20 October 2026: price by option and age, start times, age and licence rules, inclusions, deposit terms and the full star distribution. We also required a guest review in the past six months; all ten tours here have one. Two qualifying tours from Vista Los Sueños were left out because they overlap the two we kept: a shorter two-hour ride and a combo with a two-hour ATV leg. To judge what the listings do not say, we read the most recent guest reviews of all ten tours, plus the most recent one-, two- and three-star reviews of each. The top pick weighs review quality and volume, time on the trail, what the ride includes and price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an ATV tour in Jacó?+

ATV tours in Jacó cost $85 to $199 per driver, checked October 2026. A two-hour ride starts at $85, the three-hour waterfall ride costs $105 and a four-hour ride with lunch $139. Children riding on the back cost $29 to $54 with ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica.

How old do you have to be to drive an ATV in Jacó?+

16 with a valid driver's licence at ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica and Vista Los Sueños, and 18 at AXR Jacó. Younger children ride on the back of a parent's ATV: from age 4 on ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's two- and three-hour rides, and from 5 on its longer tours.

Do you need a credit card for an ATV tour in Jacó?+

Yes. Every operator here places a refundable hold on a Visa or Mastercard at check-in: $500 per two ATVs at ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica, $800 per ATV and $1,500 per buggy at AXR Jacó, and $1,000 for up to five vehicles at Vista Los Sueños, where $25 insurance per ATV is the alternative.

Which Jacó ATV tour goes to a waterfall?+

ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica's three-hour, four-hour and full-day rides all stop at a swimming waterfall with entry included, and Vista Los Sueños' three-hour ride has waterfall stops. AXR Jacó only reaches waterfalls on its three- and four-hour options, and the two-hour rides pass a small trailside fall at most.

Can two people share an ATV in Jacó?+

Yes. Children and adults who prefer not to drive can ride on the back, and guests describe teenagers riding with a parent and an older relative riding as a passenger. AXR Jacó's side-by-side buggy, priced per vehicle from $120 an hour, is the alternative for two people who want to sit side by side.

Is a Jacó ATV tour OK for beginners?+

Yes. Most guests on these tours have never driven an ATV, and guides give a briefing and set the pace. The upper trails are steep and rocky in places, so anyone uneasy can ride on the back of another rider's ATV or share a side-by-side buggy.

What should I wear on an ATV tour in Jacó?+

Closed-toe shoes, a swimsuit under clothes you do not mind ruining, sunscreen and a towel. In the dry season bring goggles and a face covering for the dust, and pack dry clothes for the trip home.

Do ATV tours in Jacó run in the rain?+

Yes. ATV Adventure Tours Costa Rica rides in all weather, and its listings refund tours cancelled for bad weather. Expect mud in the green season, roughly May to November; guests who rode in rain mostly say it added to the fun.
