April is, in our view, one of the most underrated months to visit Monteverde. It sits right on the seam between the dry and green seasons, so you get much of the dry season's reliability with the calmest winds of the year and crowds and prices easing off their peak. What typically happens is that the first three weeks stay warm and mostly dry with excellent wildlife, then the first green-season showers build toward month end. We'd book this month if you want strong quetzal odds and smooth ziplining without full high-season prices. In 2027 Holy Week falls in March, so April is a post-Easter month: only the first few days stay busy. The main tradeoff is the growing chance of afternoon rain late in the month.

Temperature and Humidity

April is among the warmest months in Monteverde, though the mountain climate keeps it comfortable: days around 26°C (79°F) and mild nights near 16°C (61°F). Humidity ticks up to about 70 percent as the first rains approach, but it stays far more pleasant than the lowlands. A light layer is still handy after dark. If you are arriving from the coast, the cooler highland air remains a welcome change.

That means the highest, most exposed zipline lines run more smoothly than they do in the gusty January-to-March window, and the high hanging bridges feel steadier. Combined with still-firm trails early in the month, April is one of the easiest months to plan a full outdoor day around, at least until the late-month rains arrive.

In 2027 Easter falls on 28 March, so Semana Santa (Holy Week, 21 to 28 March), the single biggest domestic travel week of the year in Costa Rica, is over before April starts. That makes April 2027 a calmer, post-Easter month.

April keeps Monteverde firmly in its best wildlife window. The resplendent quetzal breeding and nesting season runs from February through May, and in April pairs are actively nesting in the fruiting wild avocado trees, so sightings remain excellent, often with slightly fewer people on the trails than the March peak once the days right after Easter pass.

An early guided walk with a spotting scope is still what turns a quiet trail into 40-plus species, and the quieter, more open reserves that guides prefer give the best odds. A good April morning commonly turns up trogons, toucanets, bellbirds, and a wall of hummingbirds alongside coatis and monkeys, and the calmer air can make the forest feel especially still and alive.
